How does the “mental load” of taking care of family and household influence decisions about participating in public life? In a new @bjpols.bsky.social paper w @annanhelgoy.bsky.social we use a survey experiment priming domestic mental load to find out. doi.org/10.1017/S000... 🧵 1/9

New interview with @peoplemagazine.bsky.social @cipd.bsky.social on whether family-friendly benefits are worth it - quick answer... YES because the managing your workforce well is probably one of the most important thing in running your business & society www.peoplemanagement.co.uk/article/1905...

NEW PAPER! Shiyu Yuan explores whether COVID-19 removed the inequalities in homeworking practices across gender/racial lines. Although most workers did benefit from the rise of WFH patterns, Black men and Chinese workers not so much. @giwlkings.bsky.social onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

I'm putting together a new sociology of health / medical sociology subject for the upcoming semester. Any suggested readings (of your own or others), videos, podcasts etc, are all welcome! #sociology #medicalsociology #health #teaching

hi Bluesky sociologists - twice a year I make So Fi Zine, an indie publication for sociological fiction, poetry and visual art. The zine has had a big life since 2017 thanks mostly to twitter and I am hoping this place can now offer it a new reach. Please share if this is your jam 🙏✨ sofizine.com

Sounds familiar: "the masculinised ideal worker norm re-emerges to influence who can move up the ‘glass escalator’ to management, providing accelerated opportunities for the few men or for women who ‘manage like a man'..." journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

My fave version of this is related to graduate student training: "If you don't complete the supervision re-training module, you will no longer be able to supervise graduate students" - OKAY THEN!

End of year round up for The Sociological Review’s Fiction Series ✨

I was lucky to collaborate with @rachelbrooks.bsky.social and Eric Fu on this piece! Check it out:

Delighted to share a new publication out today in the Journal of Marriage and Family w/ the brilliant @leahruppanner.bsky.social. In "A typology of US parents’ mental loads: Core and episodic cognitive labor" we assess underlying patterns in the domestic "mental load" among 3,000 US parents. 🧵 1/10

It's more women than men who quit due to the additional burden they carry at home. This is the cost of the ideal worker norm. We're losing incredible talent that can be transformational in achieving societal development. What do we gain? Long hours work is largely performative yet harmful.

Sometimes I think there's like reviewer karma or something like it where I am waiting for a decision to be made about a manuscript I've had under review for a while and it will only be made until I've done all my reviews (which are always late!)

@rosebutler.bsky.social 👋👋👋👋👋

I'm happy to announce that I'll be the new director of the @giwlkings.bsky.social next year. Given the changes we see in society getting more people to realise the benefits of feminism is of grave importance. We're hoping to change society to benefit everyone. www.kcl.ac.uk/news/prof-he...

Today is World AIDS Day. As we mourn the HIV positive people who have died, we also celebrate the lives of HIV positive people who unapologetically challenge stigma, build communities, and fight for better healthcare. Their tenacity and joyousness brings us closer to a world where everyone thrives.
