I reread Slaughterhouse Five last year with some friends who missed it the first time in high school, and it hits very differently at 40. Vonnegut is a good answer to almost any question about being human.

I think a lot of people might answer this with The Brothers Karamazov. I don't disagree with that, but my own reading at depth has also been mostly on the American experience.
