China breaks more records with surge in solar and wind power Between January and May, China added 198 GW of solar and 46 GW of wind, enough to generate as much electricity as Indonesia or Turkey.

'The World Is Warming Up. And It’s Happening Faster' They still underestimate the rate of warming, but at least the consensus now agrees about acceleration.

When @rachelsalvidge.bsky.social analysed data for methane emissions, the area near Drax had the UK's second highest emissions of potent greenhouse gas methane. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Big step to #BeatPollution! Countries have just agreed to establish a new global science-policy panel to support the management of chemicals and waste and to prevent pollution. The panel will equip countries with the science needed #ForPeopleForPlanet: bit.ly/45z01DE

EXCLUSIVE: Ursula von der Leyen is facing the biggest challenge yet to her authority as European Commission president after political groups threatened to withdraw support over her decision to cancel climate-friendly legislation.

turns out climate change will cost dramatically more than economists predicted, and the cost of addressing it is actually negative. oops! prospect.org/environment/...

Shocking performance from @ec.europa.eu's press service which is withdrawing yet another element of the Green Deal but refusing to explain context and reasoning. "It's not acceptable to make an announcement of this importance without any explanation," says @davidcarretta.bsky.social. Check.

⚠️The EU Executive intends to withdraw the green claims proposal, a Commission spokesperson told reporters. This follows the European Parliament's decision to drop negotiations on these rules to tackle greenwashing. Seems like soon there'll be nothing left of the Green Deal...

Anybody know how much flights would cost if an actual carbon tax was imposed on aviation fuel? It's not discussed in the article. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

🎉 The Degrowth Journal is turning 5! Read how the Editorial Collective recaps the journey so far and looks toward the horizons ahead in this editorial co-edited by @sabrinachakori.bsky.social 🔗 Read it here or via our website: www.degrowthjournal.org/publications...

If you want to get just how rigged the tax system is for the rich, have a read of this tip from the AFR "wealth reporter"

We asked every single EU environment/climate ministry what they want the 2040 target to look like. Only a handful back a loophole-free target. And there's lots of interest in carbon credits. Full story, with @karlmathiesen.bsky.social and @l-guillot.bsky.social: www.politico.eu/article/eu-c...

New research from my colleagues out today looking at the environmental and social impacts of food crop-based biofuels in the US, where we now use >30% of the corn supply and >40% of the soybean oil supply (on tens of millions of acres of prime cropland) to produce only ~6% of US transport fuel. 🧪

“carriages on many routes pushing 50 years old” Sounds accurate. I took my first sleeper train from Dresden to Amsterdam last week, and it was the worst train experience of my life. Carriage looked like it was from the 60’s.

Another planetary boundary crossed. insideclimatenews.org/news/0906202...

New study: offshore wind farms may contribute to protection of marine life Several shark+ray species were detected in and around Dutch wind farms Trawling and other seabed-disturbing fishing are prohibited, allowing benthic ecosystems to recover phys.org/news/2025-05...

I just published an explainer on aerosols and their role in the climate that I've been working on for the past few months! It includes both how aerosols work, how emissions have changed, and how thats driven recent warming: www.carbonbrief.org/...

Sulphate/other aerosols are a major component of PM2.5 air pollution, causing millions of premature deaths/year but they ‘hide’ 0.5° of warming. With clean air rules, unless methane & other short-lived GHGs fall as well as aerosols, the rate of warming could accelerate even if CO2 emissions plateau.

Hi all!My name is Tianning Zhao, a PhD student in @ucc.ie and I hold MSc in ecological economics from @envleeds.bsky.social . My research focus on ecological economics, energy economics and degrowth🌍. I hope to talk more with you all here! Let’s fight for our sustainable future.

The irony of yet another carbon credit scheme in the Amazon (rainforest), which Amazon (company) hoped to use to offset its emissions, falling apart. This time it’s cuz the scheme ran afoul of laws protecting the rights of Indigenous peoples. www.reuters.com/sustainabili...

Electrochemical steel: absolutely the new hotness.

#Indigenous #EnergyTransition Transition minerals taken from our territories for EVs & advanced technologies to support so-called “sustainable cities” & green lifestyles far from where the damage is being done. Our communities are becoming sacrifice zones once again. This not a "just transition"!

The Telegraph is now having to publish so many corrections to articles where it attempts to find *any angle whatsoever* to attack net-zero polices that it makes sense to start tracking them here. These are the ones published since Labour won the election. "We are happy to correct the record."

I suggest an alternative, more snappy title for this paper: "Quantifying the stable door after the horse has bolted"

“Coal is everywhere but we get nothing from it. Only 20% [of the local population] get permanent employment. And there’s no land for rehabilitation [post displacement for coal mining] because coal is everywhere.” excellent in-depth look at coal mining in India by @rishpardikar.bsky.social

If you know who this guy is (Rutger Bregman), recognise any of these books, or they appeal to your inner psyche, then you should beware and read the brilliant piece below which calls out this new form of "power laundering"...

There's IPCC for climate, and IPBES for nature. But what about pollution? Talks to establish a global science body will try again. We've assessed the pitfalls & offer ideas to make this body work for people & planet. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Between the EU’s GHG target and policy based progress, and China’s industrial policy based progress (PV, EV, batteries), let’s all cut the BS that climate policy has vapourized somehow. North America is a sideshow now - what matter is how the Global South develops. www.ft.com/content/4abd...

West Papua’s Indigenous people have called for a boycott of KitKat, Smarties and Aero chocolate, Oreo biscuits and Ritz crackers, Pantene and Herbal Essences, over alleged ecocide in their territory

New review article: Warming of +1.5 °C is too high for polar ice sheets. "Multiple lines of evidence show that +1.5 °C is too high and even current climate forcing (+1.2 °C), if sustained, is likely to generate several metres of sea-level rise over coming centuries." www.nature.com/articles/s43...

✊Efforts agitating for a liveable planet are working✊ "A survey of CEOs at AEP member companies blamed Australia’s “well intentioned” environmental regulation, efforts to address climate change, and specifically singled out climate activism and litigation as a threat to continued investment." 🙌

shared EVs for social housing. another area where social housing can provide a buoy against energy poverty

Climate approached from a different perspective than I’m used to. Worth a listen.

New record for batteries in California (CAISO) 🔋⚡ Yesterday, on the 20th May 2025, battery discharge crossed 10 GW for the first time. That was enough to meet a THIRD of evening peak demand. Solar moved fast, batteries are moving even faster...
