Mike Masnick explains Why Techdirt Is Now A Democracy Blog (Whether We Like It Or Not). “Right now, the story that matters most is how the dismantling of American institutions threatens everything else we cover.” [kottke.org]

“What we’re witnessing isn’t just another political cycle or policy debate — it’s an organized effort to destroy the very systems that have made American innovation possible.”

Abolishing 230 is the express lane to complete authoritarian control of all social media, including Bluesky. People need to educate themselves tout suite.

Is anyone even denying that this is genocide / ethnic cleansing anymore?

Play stupid segregationist games Win stupid segregationist prizes. I’m going to Costco. Anyone want anything?

Simple as this. foreignpolicy.com/2025/02/11/d...

Yes. “People are doing things. You will meet them when YOU start doing things.” Lots of information and resources in this one. open.substack.com/pub/sherrily...

Interesting and helpful perspective on the billionaires running the country. I wish she had also described the race and transgender wars as well, because they are as impactful and important as the gender battle. It's a white cis male oligarchy, which is even more harmful and despicable.

"The best study on the subject in my opinion suggests that in the long term, institutions really can’t save us; that civil society and mass mobilization are a more potent check on a backsliding democracy in the long term..." meditations-in-an-emergency.ghost.io/the-nature-o...

New article! On a certain plutocrat invading our government to steal our future: sarahkendzior.substack.com/p/the-miners

ICYMI - I spearheaded the stand up of a committee focused on safeguarding our city services & residents from federal policy changes. We are working hard to get this committee stood up & able to deliver ASAP. As a city leader, I know we must act. Local government is the last line of democracy.

For those wondering about WA state, you can contact AG Nick Brown’s office here www.atg.wa.gov/contactus.aspx

Okay, let's keep going. Got another one today looking at just how absolutely fucking crazy it is that an inexperienced Musk-lackey is apparently pushing untested live code to America's checkbook. Tried to contextualize all of it. www.techdirt.com/2025/02/05/a...

This is a great piece by @jamellebouie.net on the crisis we are in right now and there is no going back to what once was

A really essential piece on the impoundments that are still happening -- and the real consequences for people who rely on federal funding. @ddayen.bsky.social has been killing it on the impoundments beat.

I wrote a thing about how there appear to be at least a few of the folks who helped sanewash Trump/Muskism who are recognizing "wait, shit is going bad" and I know it's easy to demonize those people, but we may need more people like them to stop this. www.techdirt.com/2025/02/04/f...

As digital privacy advocates have explained for years, every back door you create for yourself is a front door for an attacker. There's no chance code cooked up in a week by Musk acolytes is secure. The question is when, not if, the Treasury will be compromised by hostiles beyond Musk himself.

Government is often too cautious with changes, but recoding the government payment system without extensive testing seems reckless.

Pretty good read on all of the illegal stuff happening. It’d be even better with a call to action to contact your electeds via email/phone/in person to stop this insanity no matter where you live

Senate democrats just finished a press conference on the illegal access of our financial data www.c-span.org/event/news-c...

I talked to @nathantankus.bsky.social about what it means for forces allied with Elon Musk to take over the Treasury Department's payment system, it's really good and you should read it but in some ways the headline quote says it all. prospect.org/economy/2025...

Helpful thread summarizing a lot of the tech shenanigans going on

I know it’s not the same but with all the anti-DEIA things (e.g. the attack on civil rights) I can’t help but think of this being a precursor to the eugenics wars in the #StarTrek universe

Having watched with growing alarm the developments of the last 24 and 36 hours in Washington, I thought I’d take a stab at how the US media would cover this story if it was happening in a foreign country. Here’s that story that should be written this weekend: www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/musk-s-jun...

it's not hyperbolic to say we're witnessing a coup.

More on the great forgetting. This seems problematic @georgetakei.bsky.social @jayapal.house.gov @meng.house.gov @digiphile.bsky.social @denshoproject.bsky.social

The extent of this access order has been very concerning to me. I would hope that agencies exercise caution and track what access has been shared if they are forced to; the order not making any distinction around Confidential Unclassified Information (CUI) is extremely sloppy

Every single report on the Trump funding freeze — every report on Medicare portal, Head Start, homeless veterans programs — needs to mention immediately WHY. The freeze is in order to complete an ideological purge of so-called “woke” programming. This is IMPORTANT, y’all.

this is an illegal order. the president does not have the legal authority to discriminate against entire categories of americans on the basis of sex. this order is no different than if he had issued one reinstituting segregation.

Freeze unanimous consent in the Senate until further notice.

Thanks, @murray.senate.gov. Let’s get this reversed along with the pauses to health and science funding

As someone who enjoys running long distances this resonates with me

I wrote angry yesterday, and sat on it. I wrote even angrier this morning, and just sent it out. civic-texts.ghost.io/trumps-blata... This week showed we are living through the greatest test to the rule of law in the United States since the Civil War.

📄 NEW: "Now, we rebuild: Why 'defending democracy' hasn't worked" Defending democracy failed because it also required defending the status quo. Now we are called to create a future worth fighting for. My latest. america2.news/now-we-rebui...

Makes me wonder what other forms of oversight could look like. Aside from different organizations like @eff.org and the @aclu.org , what about shareholder pressure on the tech companies that enable such surveillance?

Keep up the good work of resistance @nickbrownnow.bsky.social www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news...

Great read by @pahlkadot.bsky.social www.eatingpolicy.com/p/thoughts-f...

Good take on DOGE. Not sure traditional politics, campaigns, and organizations are ready to face the challenge of overcoming this in the years ahead but we need to try

TikTok shut down in the US for a few hours, and then restarted again, praising Trump both times, even though Trump is not yet President, and has no formal power at this point.

it's crazy how none of this spurred a deeper policy debate about data privacy. just about who has the right to collect, buy, sell, and own our data.

I’ll be glad when this week is over. Lost two family elders and an appendix

Recently finished reading one of Obama’s book picks “Stolen Pride” and I keep thinking that “The Guarantee: Inside the Fight for America’s Next Economy” is in the right direction

Hello world! Again. Giving this another shot as me rather than b2ix
