Watching Severance makes me want to listen to Rage Against The Machine.

Gene Hackman was one of my favorite actors. I saw him once in the British Airways lounge at JFK.

"I'm poor, but . . . I can't say I'm very honest, but . . . in society it's generally accepted as an axiom that I'm a fallen angel. So help me God, I can't imagine that I was ever an angel. If I was, then it was such a long time ago that forgetting it would hardly be a sin."

This weekend I'm conducting a Prayer School at Bellwood Mennonite Church in Milford, Nebraska (near Lincoln). Friday, February 28: 7:00–8:30 PM Saturday, March 1: 9:00 AM–12:30 PM You are invited.

Because we assume that democracies protect our freedoms as Christians, we may well miss the ways in which the democratic state remains a state that continues to wear the head of the beast. In this respect, democracy has been a particularly subtle temptation for Christianity.

Severance = Lost 💯

It’s Karamazov Night. Tonight it’s The Boys.

St. Paul’s theology of the eschatological triumph of the mercy of God. For God has imprisoned all in disobedience so that he may be merciful to all. O the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments! How inscrutable are his ways! –Romans 11:32–33

The Perfection of Mercy youtu.be/mNmi9tuSVkA?...

In his Sermon on the Plain Jesus tells us that God is our Father, and that our Father is merciful; and because we are children of God, we should be merciful just as our Father is merciful. Jesus calls us to mercy, not merely because mercy is a superior ethic or because mercy tends toward peace…

Looking at the universe who would be so feeble-minded as not to believe that God is all in all—that He clothes himself with the universe and at the same time contains it and dwells in it? What exists depends on Him who exists and nothing can exist except in the bosom of Him who is. ~Gregory of Nyssa

I’ve watched “A Hidden Life” between thirty or forty times. I’m watching it again tonight. God bless Franz Jägerstätter. God bless Terrence Malick.

All this week I’m preparing for our Lenten Retreat that begins the day after Ash Wednesday. The Cost of Discipleship: Entering Lent with Dietrich Bonhoeffer (I’m not sure if registration is still open or if there are any openings left, but if you’re interested you can go to wolc.com and check.)

I see distressingly little difference between the German Christian Movement of the 1930s and American Christian Nationalism in the 2020s. I’m not being hyperbolic; I’m dead serious. And if you’re inclined to doubt or dispute this, I invite you to examine the history for yourself.

“This contemporizing of the Christian message leads directly to paganism, which means that the only difference between German Christians and so-called neo-pagans is honesty.” –Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Works 14, 1935–1937, 414

I need to write five sermons this week. 🫤 Where do I start? With a playlist. Here it is… 88 songs, 6 hrs, 46 min open.spotify.com/playlist/45Q...

Taken eight minutes before The Brothers Karamazov Course Class Seven. I can tell you two things about teaching this course: 1. It’s a lot of work. 2. It’s a ton of fun. #TheBrothersKaramazov #Dostoevsky

No Easy Alliance youtu.be/eVtEDa1MQ74?...

“Without God all things are permitted.” ~Ivan Karamazov

“The kingdom of the world is founded on greed and war—Mammon and Mars. The kingdom of God is founded on the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Furthermore, these two kingdoms are organized around irreconcilable values.” - @brianzahnd.bsky.social

There is no easy alliance between the kingdom of the world and the kingdom of God, and all attempts to create an easy alliance between these two kingdoms are misguided and doomed to failure. The kingdom of the world is founded on greed and war—Mammon and Mars.

You cannot conscript Christ to serve a nationalist agenda. Jesus is Lord . . . Not Francis Scott Key.

Friday night vinyl.

Christianity without transcendence degenerates into politics. Sadly, far too many today are apparently embarrassed by a transcendent Christianity.

I *highly* recommend this to those who desire to think about culture and civilization in the light of Christ. It will be well worth an hour of your time. youtu.be/FrjdaVol2TA?...

Between March 25 and April 2 Bob Dylan is doing six shows within driving distance of me…and I’m in Türkiye the whole time. 😶

If you don’t want to believe in Jesus, then I have nothing to offer other than a sincere and non-threatening “God bless you.” But if you do want to believe in Jesus…then do! That’s it. Simply follow the impulse, make a decision, leap to faith, believe, and begin to obey Jesus as Lord.

Between now and the Parousia an authentic Christianity will be a subversive counterculture Christianity; not one dominating culture, but one from the margins pointing to something other.

The primary problem with American evangelicalism is not that it is too evangelical, but that it is far too American. The values and aspirations of the American empire are given religious sanction in the evangelical church. This the very opposite of what it means to be a prophetic people.

Preparing for tonight’s class.
