As a touring professional theremin player, I enjoy the way hotel bathrooms help me maintain my skills.

I’m kind of embarrassed to be the first person to say this: the yellow and green things are pattypan squash cut in half.

He and I were participants in the same workshop run by an arts collective in LA in like 2018 - really really nice guy!

Among the worst parts: needing to go through multiple screens to change the airflow, and blind spot monitoring on the screen instead of the side mirror makes you look towards the center console instead of outside of the car, you know, where the obstacles are!

I mean no, not really. I should note that some suppliers pay duties and shipping, so they raise their prices on us, and we can adjust our margin. On others we just have to say ok we got hit with $X tariffs on $Y wholesale value for this shipment and decide what to do

No idea. It’s so complicated. Also with rates changing as often as they have lately, it’s very likely we will have items from more than one shipment in stock at the same time, arrived with different rates.

The tariffs are completely opaque to us and come as a surprise after goods land. I don’t agree with a single thing this administration is doing but I don’t think people really understand how tariffs work from a retailer’s perspective.

Sorry, won’t work. I manage online sales for a “small” company but we have 15,000 products. When we get a shipment from a supplier, all we see is a DHL bill for duties, one amount, not broken out by item. And nothing in our point of sale software would let us do this.

A friend of mine coined the term “single-serving friend” for encounters like that. Can be very entertaining!

I am an internationalist. I believe in creating a world where people across this planet can live in peace, dignity, and prosperity whoever they happen to be. I think this world will be substantially more difficult to bring about if the United States is controlled by capital and the right.

This is really super. As someone who thinks a lot about the evolution of the phonological system in humans I think this is extremely important. Thanks @cedricboeckx.bsky.social for bringing this to my attention

Amen. I made my living in linguistics for a little while, have now been continuing to research and publish while working from outside for much longer than I was ever inside. It’s very illuminating. Maybe not the career path I had envisioned but I’m very happy.

I work for a store for horse stuff and I’m constantly getting unsolicited emails from factories in China and South Asia that make cheap horse clothes. I’ll think of you next time I clear my spam folder!

Last week there was a small MAGA contingent on the overpass above Hill on the 210. I took great pleasure in flipping them off and barely anyone honked in support.

I took two semesters of semantics in grad school and it felt just like this. A lot of homework where the answer was “John smokes is true if and only if John smokes”

Ed Sheeran, “Perfect.” My friends played it as they walked down the aisle at their wedding and I almost got up and left.
