The "crisis of masculinity" that everyone wrings their hands over is that our notion of masculinity is explicitly based in violence and has to be literally beaten into kids, but we've progressed to the point where openly beating kids is frowned upon.

Why are people homophobic/transphobic? THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT LOVE IS. They don't know what being in love or making love is. Who you are & who you love is clinical & prescribed to them. So "we feel differently than you" just doesn't compute because, to them, your feelings have nothing to do with it.

Random childhood memory: when I was 10, when we were covering current events in class I had to raise my hand and ask "What's 'gay'?" in response to a story on Don't Ask Don't Tell. The entire class laughed at me; I, the sheltered socially awkward nerd, was the only one who didn't know.
