Today is our last full day in Ft. Lauderdale. After completing chores and taking care of online business we did venture out for some local shopping. On our way home we stopped in at Smoke On The Water cigar bar and grill in Weston. We enjoyed cocktails and soaked up the ambiance of this fun place.

There’s nothing like a beautiful sunrise over a sandy beach. It’s not often we get to see this magical sight. I painted this pink candy floss colored sunrise in memory of those I’ve seen and hope of many more to be enjoyed in the future. Enjoy.

Today we took a short road trip up to West Palm Beach. The weather was beautiful however the traffic sucked. After navigating the six lane highways we did enjoy a drive along the coast road before heading home. We stopped in at historic Banana Boat bar and grill at Boynton Bay marina for lunch.

The history of Fort Lauderdale started more than 4,000 years ago when the first aboriginal natives lived there and later the Tequesta Indians who lived there for over a thousand years. Now it has over 1,800 inhabitants. Shiny skyscrapers and luxury homes line the canals and mainland city.

Today we visited the Everglades Holiday Park west of Ft. Lauderdale and enjoyed our first airboat ride. This was a welcome one hour thrill and was well worth it. Our tickets included a live alligator viewing and presentation after our boat ride. A fun experience. #Airstream

We drove into Fort Lauderdale. It is a beautiful seaside city with over 1.8 million population. It has 23 miles of sandy beaches and a network of 165 miles of canals that give it the name,’Venice of America’. Fort Lauderdale hosts an International boat show every year.

We have really been enjoying learning about Floridas rich past. St Austin’s lighthouse. The earliest wooden lighthouse was recorded in 1587 on Anastasia island. In 1737 it was replaced with a 30 ft tower made of coquina. ( shell/limestone) There a great views from the top.

I painted the Castillo de San Marcos in St Augustine,FL. A fascinating place to visit with great views of the town and port. The fort was built in 1627 and took 23 years to finish. The original forts were built of wood and had to be replaced 9 times. The latest fort was made from stone.

Today is Caroline’s 66th birthday and time to leave Key West and drive back to the Airstream in Ft. Lauderdale. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay topped off with a delicious fresh seafood dinner at the Stoned Crab restaurant at our resort. We both had lobster alfredo and shared a slice of key lime pie.

Today we took a self guided walking tour of the downtown area. We took in the shops on Duval street and enjoyed a guided tour of the Earnest Hemingway house. It was fun to see many of the 59 resident cats relaxing on the property. After that we stopped in at the Bahama Village bar for a cold one.

We spent the weekend in Key West celebrating our joint birthdays and Valentine’s Day. Now I’m continuing my travel journey. Magnolia Avenue, St Augustine, FL. the most beautiful road in the USA. Old oaks lean over the road, giving shade. Spanish moss hangs from the branches. So other worldly.

I recently finished a crepe flower arrangement for my son and his girlfriend to complement a Western cowboy painting they purchased. The colors were warm and Fall flowers were my chosen subjects. It was fun to try a different season of colors for a change.

Today we left the Airstream in Ft. Lauderdale and drove down to Key West for Valentine’s weekend to celebrate both Caroline any my 66th birthdays. We are staying at the Ibis Bay beach resort. We are here for three nights. We started with well deserved cocktails and fresh seafood dishes. #Airstream

My daughter bought me a book about making crepe paper flowers. This art form used to be very popular and has experienced a huge resurgence of interest. Many new books have been written on the subject and they are so inspiring. I started to practice and eventually made all the flowers for her wedding

Today was a low key day for us staying close to our campsite completing chores and taking care of online business. I am just sharing some additional pics that we took yesterday during our visit to the Flamingo Gardens. Well worth a visit. #Airstream

Today we enjoyed a visit to Flamingo Gardens in Ft. Lauderdale. This is one of the oldest botanical gardens and attractions in Southern Florida established in 1927. We took a self guided walking tour and a guided trolley car tour to experience the rare and exotic trees, plants and wildlife.

Today was a low key day for us staying close to our campsite.  After completing our chores we did run down to Flanigan’s a local neighborhood seafood bar and grill for lunch. This place had a fun vibe and was established in 1959. We both enjoyed a generous serving of fish tacos and fries. #Airstream

I was going to attempt a fresh post everyday from my watercolor travelogue, but enjoying visiting places gets in the way of painting! Lol. At least I’m taking lots of lovely photos for reference and maybe to use in bigger paintings when I return home. I’m still enjoying painting St Augustine though.

Today we took the highly recommended water taxi tour of the intercostal area of Ft. Lauderdale. We certainly got a peek into the life styles of the rich and famous. This was absolutely stunning and well worth it if you are new to the area or looking for a relaxing guided tour. #Airstream

Today was our first full day in Ft. Lauderdale. We enjoyed beautiful weather and took a drive downtown to check out the sights.  We were not disappointed. This place is massive with a similar vibe to Miami. The beachfront area was packed with interesting people. #Airstream

My children bought me a travel sketch journal which I’ve brought with me on vacation. I’ve never tried recording my travels in this way so I’m looking for ideas and inspiration. Meanwhile I finished my first page. Let’s see if I can keep this going.

Today was a beautiful day to break camp and travel from St. Augustine to Ft. Lauderdale where we are staying at a KOA for the next two weeks. The camp site is in the process of being upgraded. We have a tight back in site. Luckily the camp guide was an experienced trucker so was able to assist us.

I painted this watercolor to celebrate the rich 90 years my mother has lived and gave it to her on her birthday. She grew up in London in the Second World War, experiencing the bombing raids and rationing. You could say, ‘She’s seen a lot of things’ and lived a wonderful life. #Art #watercolor

Today was our last full day in St. Augustine. After completing chores and visiting the local mall we topped off the day with an awesome outdoor dining experience at the Boathouse restaurant. Caroline had lobster ravioli and I had crab stuffed grouper and we finished off with a slice of key lime pie.

When my wonderful mother turned 90 last year I decided to paint a watercolor of her on her special wedding day to Hugh. Portrait painting is still a new challenge to me, especially if you want to have a passing likeness to the person who commissioned it. Luckily mum loved it. She’s very forgiving.

Today we enjoyed beautiful weather and visited Castillo de San Marcos the oldest masonry fort in America built in the 1600’s to defend St. Augustine against foreign invaders. We also visited the St. Augustine light house built in 1874. #Airstream

‘Oh to be in England’ Robert Browning’s famous poem. This watercolor captures the beautiful patchwork fields. A view I never get bored of. This is another attempt at loose watercolor inspired by one of my favorite artists. Not for sale, just to learn. #
