NYT WTF? @nytimes.com this headline is so irresponsible. It normalizes Muskโ€™s coup. Musk is not elected or confirmed. He is likely compromised and certainly has conflicts of interest. He is not โ€œtransforming governmentโ€. He is endangering Americans.

I get unreasonably pumped when everyone in a meeting has a last name that's also a plain English word, and not a proper noun. (Upcoming call has a brown, a price, and a fox.)

Uhm. Is it just me or does @washingtonpost.com have no coverage of the protests today?

Thereโ€™s a real chance that we staring down a new pandemic in the form of bird flu. It could never happen or happen in the coming months. And we are in the process of decimating our core national public health and infectious disease service.

Tech bros cheering on the cuts to grant funding built businesses and wealth on the back of decades of university R&D work. Much of that knowledge was given away to the public. This is basic pulling-up-the-ladder nonsense via rewriting history. They owe the public, not the other way around.

I broke a rib Saturday after I slipped on icy porch steps. I just sneezed for the first time since it happened. It was excruciating.

If you are terrified about what's happening to our government, this is worth your time.

In a couple weeks I'm hosting a book club meeting for The Secret Life of Data, a new book published by MIT Press about how data is used beyond its initial purpose. Learn more and register here: lu.ma/49xnmpr1

DC-area health nerds, listen up! My friend @adamratnermd.bsky.social will be in town Feb 23 at Politics and Prose discussing his exciting new book Booster Shots: The Urgent Lessons of Measles and the Uncertain Future of Children's Health. politics-prose.com/adam-ratner

โ€œWe have essential medicines rotting in warehouses in the DRC because we canโ€™t operate the air conditioning." Cruelty is the point. This story is one drop in a firehose of horror, but the ramifications will be felt for years to come, long after the goons are gone. www.nbcnews.com/news/politic...

Living in the DC area, EVERY neighbor I chat up has been impacted by the illegal shenanigans โ€“ย whether they work for the federal government, a contractor, a multilateral, or outside the government. Shout out to the neighbor hosting a Public Servant Open House on Sat to provide solidarity. โœŠ

โ€œApple Inc. has been secretly working with SpaceX & T-Mobile US to add support for Starlink network in its latest iPhone software, providing an alternative to the companyโ€™s in-house satellite-communication serviceโ€ Perhaps it was done in secret because users donโ€™t want Muskโ€™s tech on our phones?

I use the phrase "in that moment" with some frequency in my writing, and the grammar checker in Docs is always correcting me to "at that moment". Wondering if this is the New Yorker in me that waits "on line" and not "in line".

Montgomery County Public Schools comes out and tells Trump to pound sand with his EO telling schools that they have to discriminate against transgender students. This is how you refuse to comply.

The price of eggs in the US is spiking, mostly due to #H5N1 bird flu. Solving the problem requires urgent, important communications from the CDC & FDA* and rapid development of research by the NIH** * Currently paused by Executive Order ** Grant reviews now all canceled www.kcur.org/news/2025-01...

Had to say goodbye to this sweet little beagle today. Maple was with us for 12 wonderful years and we were lucky to have her. Please give your faithful companions an extra treat or two in her honor. Rest in treats Maple

Why I go to The IA Conference @theiaconf.bsky.social and I hope you do, too โ€“ย A Thread The IA Conference is an annual community-run conference for information architecture. Iโ€™ve been to most of them, and itโ€™s the event I look forward to most every year. Hereโ€™s why...

โ€œWhen people show you who they are, believe them.โ€ โ€” Dr Maya Angelou

You know you're an information architect when you say to your client, "Some aquariums have penguins."

As information architects, we must address disinformation and misinformation in the digital spaces we design, build, curate, and manage. Disinformation is no longer solely a wartime tactic. It is a social virus. I'll be spending some time this year on this. If you have thoughts, I'm interested!

I have a newsletter! curioussquid.substack.com

One week from today, I hope you'll join me for the first Build Your IA Playbook of 2025: Map the flow. It's free! It's fun! Details and sign-up here: lu.ma/cmak593t

Emerging independent news outlets are a happy outcome of the dismal political/social landscape. Of new pub @contrariannews.bsky.social, editor Jen Rubin says to expect โ€œreported opinion and commentaryโ€ Call me skeptical. The world doesn't need more commentary. It needs more responsible reporting.

Yes, I'm a hammer so everything is a nail, but the problems with Sonos' app can be traced to poor information architecture. Anyway, the whole thing reminds me of this poster I presented way back at The IA Summit in 2005: Architecting Music Libraries. www.flickr.com/photos/brown...

I have about a dozen different quarterly catch-up calls with friends and colleagues. Since I'm a remote, sole practitioner, these are my hallway conversations, my persistent connections to the community, and my mental health breaks all rolled into one.

To misquote those to whom the original is attributed: ~ If I had more time, I would have designed a simpler architecture ~ I thought of this when my client said their site's navigation should strive for "ruthless simplicity".

A misconception about information architecture is that it can only solve deep, systemic problems. We used to call this "Big IA". The industry has forgotten that IA plays a role in day-to-day design decisions, too. What we used to call "Little IA." What's a little IA problem you've faced recently?
