Sad to learn we lost Keith Blackwell, an unsung hero of the aging field. Keith showed rapamycin extends C. elegans lifespan, that mTORC2 has diet-dependent effects on aging, and linked together skn1 TOR splicing and aging. www.legacy.com/us/obituarie...

Preprint alert @biorxivpreprint! We are excited to share our latest study led by @kkawamura13.bsky.social @annadiederich01.bsky.social in collaboration with & C. Demetriades Lab & @muellerrom.bsky.social Lab www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

I'm giving a talk tomorrow morning about my book ("How We Age"). But the slides already feel out of date because 1) there are so many new stories in the field, and 2) science as we know it is being destroyed, so the pipeline from ideas to drugs will dry up soon. Sigh

A few days late, but I’m happy to post our recent publication on body-to-brain signaling regulation of memory in Nature Aging:

KODAMA goes spatial. doi.org/10.1101/2025... #spatialtranscriptomics #visium #visiumhd #seurat #giotto

Online now!✨RESEARCH: Zhou, Novak et al show that the hypodermis regulates memory in C. elegans via insulin/IGF-1 and Notch signaling; activating this pathway rescues CREB-dependent memory in aged worms @ctmurphy1.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s43... rdcu.be/eo3Pd

I'm excited to announce that I'll be starting a lab at UCSF in the @ihgatucsf.bsky.social and @ucsf-epibiostat.bsky.social in July. We'll work at the intersection of statistical genetics, population genetics, and machine learning.

I have an opportunity to hire a staff scientist for my lab. Looking for someone with outstanding skillset in ML/statistics, genomics applications; interest in mentoring, strong publication record, PD experience required. Email CV to me+cc my assistant (see 'contact' on my website). Ad to follow.

Memory loss in aging - what are the mechanisms and can they be reversed? A fascinating conversation with @ctmurphy1.bsky.social youtu.be/To5KFveFm9c?...

Congratulations to our Human Neural Circuitry team; bit.ly/4dEyX7Z publishes today in Science! This was the hardest challenge of my career, but one of the most rewarding, after years of rebuilding– & expanding my inpatient neuropsychiatry in the service of basic discovery bsky.app/profile/deis...

We—Nicolas @rohner.bsky.social, Lauren @lsaunders.bsky.social, Arica @abeisaw.bsky.social & Sepand @rastapopolus.bsky.social—are planning the first German #fish ( #zebrafish, #medaka, #killifish, others) #meeting for September 2026. If you're a PI & want info, get in touch!

David Liu @harvard.edu beautifully articulates the criticality of basic science funding for developing revolutionary therapeutics like life-saving base editors 👏 youtu.be/8YhJM6zxYDw?...

🧪 #neurology #neuroskyence tinyurl.com/bp5d8386 Another beautiful example of NIH-SPONSORED bedside to bench and back to bedside work from an outstanding clinician scientist. This work is producing some of the most compelling responses to treatment in what is arguably the worst pediatric brain tumor.

Congratulations to our 2025 Catalyst Momentum awardees! Their projects explore how sleep, inflammation, endocannabinoid metabolism, cellular stress, microglia, and other factors shape brain aging and resilience. Learn more: brainresilience.stanford.edu/news/fueling...

It was so much fun to discuss why we do basic science. "If we understand how biology works, then lots of useful applications will come out of it ... But honestly, that’s not the only thing that drives people. People are just curious, and they want to know how living systems work." #Celegans 🧪🧬🪱

I am pleased to share our recent publication, fruit of a wonderful collaboration with truly amazing colleagues @adrienneboire.bsky.social and @meningojan.bsky.social, whose work was a tour de force demonstrating that immunology in the brain is a different beast -> www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Sharing a new paper from the lab. This paper, led by Sangyoon Ko, represents a merging of two longstanding research themes in the lab-- adult neurogenesis and systems consolidation. rdcu.be/el18q A short thread follows for those interested. 1/n

Maps are everywhere in the brain...and finally we've discovered one in the nose! Led by @davidhbrann.bsky.social, we uncovered the logic that specifies the positions of each of the 1,000 sensory neuron subtypes in the nose and aligns their projections to the brain.👇👃see more details below👃👇

🧪#Celegans - I am very excited to announce the publication of our latest finding in transgenerational epigenetic inheritance (TEI) of learned pathogen avoidance - • C. elegans transgenerational avoidance of P. fluorescens is mediated by the Pfs1 sRNA and vab-1 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Our latest work now online in Cell: Rewriting regulatory DNA to dissect and reprogram gene expression Our new method (Variant-EFFECTS) uses high-throughput prime editing + flow sorting + sequencing to precisely measure effects of noncoding variants on gene expression Thread 👇

We've made remarkable progress in the science of aging (geroscience) with readiness to apply this for "precision geromedicine." A brilliant new review @cellpress.bsky.social www.cell.com/cell/fulltex...

🎈Our latest 🪅 We know that in addition to exteroceptive mechanisms, interoceptive chemosensation is also critical for regulating physiology/behavior. We find that an enteric neuron in worms senses ingested salts via a variant ionotropic receptor (IR like the fly IRs) to regulate salt stress. 1/n

Silencing of transgenes during iPSC differentiation is a frequent problem. 🧬🫢 Check out the piggyBac system below, which has resisted silencing in many protocols across many labs. 💪 Excited that our lab could contribute to this team effort led by @tuenaka.bsky.social & Marius Wernig!

Our @natrevimmunol.bsky.social review with @abhishekgarglab.bsky.social, @deadoc80.bsky.social and Kellie Smith is out! We attempt to integrate the data on CD8 T cell dysfunction into a new framework of hypofunctionality in cancer and chronic infections! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Published an op-ed for @cnn.com: “Nobel laureate: I owe America my success. Today, its scientific future is in danger.” A personal reflection on what’s at stake as science funding gets slashed. I’d be grateful if you could amplify both in and beyond the science world. www.cnn.com/2025/04/09/h...

After 7 years, thrilled to finally share our #MICrONS functional connectomics results! We recorded activity from ~75K neurons in the visual cortex of a single mouse, then mapped its wiring using electron microscopy. nature.com/immersive/d42859-025-00001-w/index.html

Ever wondered what the lonely histone H3C110 does? We found that it’s lost in many fungi. Adding it back boosts histone H3 copper reductase activity, rescues iron defects and modulates lifespan, suggesting an evolutionary tradeoff between these effects. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
