'Carbohydrate Polymers' has been infected by a severe case of copy-pasteritis once more: Bai et al. 2023 (DOI: 10.1016/j.carbpol.2023.120693). Figures 3 and 4 are a bit cringe. I have just exceeded 100 papers flagged by me in the journal alone (many more by others). pubpeer.com/publications...

I had missed this retraction of January 3, 2025. The 40th for the IHU. The 33rd for Didier Raoult. Study conducted without the ethical authorizations required by French law on the IHU's own students. No response from the authors. doi.org/10.1016/j.ij...

I swear, I feel like a 21st century luddite when specifically looking at 99.9% of modern AI tech. Most of it in my opinion is utterly useless, but confidently incorrect in its statements. I guarantee this will be considered one of my “bad takes” but the technology feels all hype no substance to me.

And arrogant. Ive never encountered a class of people so convinced that they and they alone have the answers to everything, no matter what the subject in question is--from higher education to medicine to art and literature. They might have no training or skill in it, but are convinced they know best

This recent paper on tomography of submarine Kolumbo volcano, near #Santorini, describes the detection of “a body of mobile magma”, but unfortunately uses a complicated coordinate system that makes it difficult to relate to current seismicity. ⚒️🧪🌋 agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

Great description of an unusual and potentially devastating hazard associated with volcanoes. Also note the fascinating way in which limnic eruptions can be mitigated: by releasing gas before it accumulates, via fountains (USGS photo of Lake Nyos).

Magnitude 6 #earthquake in #Ethiopia. Largest event of ongoing swarm. Epicenter close to Fentale #volcano. Depending on institutes ≠ moment tensor solutions, ex. below. USGS non-double couple solution (right) could perhaps mean caldera or magmatic chamber collapse + ring faulting (just hypothesis).

The purge hit the USGS today. I took the day off, but to the best of my knowledge I survived this round. At least one of my coworkers wasn’t so lucky. A bunch of incredible scientists working on what in many instances is life saving work are now out of a job due to political animus.

Hey thank you all for following my empty account! I will do my best to post here from now on! My ambition is to be a bit more open/casual and a new platform seems like a good plce to start! ^.^

Repeating my helpful little mnemonic song from Twitter: If he'll drive you to the criming, he's a Fed 👏👏 If he'll drive you to the criming, he's a Fed 👏👏 If you can't get there without him And you don't know much about him If he'll drive you to the criming, he's a Fed 👏👏

Quick reminder that if you see a headline from a source you’ve never heard of that isn’t being reported by anyone else, you really should do some due diligence before spreading it around as fact. There’s enough misinformation floating around already; no need to add more.

(1/2) An example that makes me believe that the authors made an honest mistake: Prokopiuk et al. 2023 (DOI: 10.1007/s12011-022-03403-3) in Biological Trace Element Research. I found a very obvious duplication in Figure 7 and posted it on PubPeer. The corresponding author of the paper replied...

It's such a different world view when your work "product" is public service. For 20+ yrs all my publicly visible work was public domain, mostly uncredited. It was both humbling and exhilarating. It made me gleeful to answer public requests: No, there's no fee! No license! You don't need permission!
