Andrea Moore (Smith) just gave a talk at Stony Brook which ruled so I wanted to plug her new book which drops in a few weeks. It’s about new music as a vector for remembering crisis. Turns out she’s also a lovely person!! www.fordhampress.com/978153150869...

It’s actually just smart sleep hygiene to try to go gentle into that good night

between Governors Hochul and Pritzker, you can imagine a dynamic developing where Democratic politicians compete over becoming the face of effective resistance to Trump. I think there are clear political upsides to winning that race and am mostly surprised that there have been so few runners so far

For my book, one of the key archives was NARA, a wonderful place whose gutting sucks a lot. Academic researchers like me do use it, but most of the crowd there (as well as the staff!) is vets or families of vets doing genealogy or personal history. Targeting it is weird.

I still think the Woodstock ‘99 doc is our most politically explanatory film. Young white men, unhappy that women are on television, and unaware that they themselves are locked in an anarchocapitalist prison, generate sociality by stewing in their own filth and eventually burning down everything.

Imagine thinking that “education” means nothing more than an accumulation of facts

having drinks tonight with a new friend who works on trans health policy - he suggested that current GOP strategy is not just transphobia, but specifically transphobia WITHOUT homophobia, in an effort to fracture the LGBTQ+ community. Is there writing on this?

The humanities grants attention to the histories of oppressed people, which is both why it has social value and why it is under siege. In case anyone asks.
