My government will rebuild and rearm our military to prepare Canada for an increasingly divided world. By boosting domestic production, using Canadian materials, and backing new Canadian technologies, we’ll get the job done.

April 14, 1980: Jeanne Sauve became the first female, and first non-lawyer, to serve as the Speaker of the House of Commons. Four years later, she became Canada's first female Governor General. Learn more 👇

Throughout the federal election campaign, I am looking at elections from Canada's past. Today, it is the 1949 election. The first election for Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent, and with Newfoundland as part of Canada, it led to the biggest Liberal victory in history. 🧵1/12

Sharp lobed Hepatica (Hepatica acutiloba) blooming now! The tiny flowers are delicate and inconspicuous you may miss them strolling by.

Tonight while the USA sleeps, 129 million birds will fly overhead as part of spring migration. Many will be tiny, colorful visitors arriving from South and Central America, such as warblers. Migration modeling is fascinating. Yup, that’s BIRDS on the weather radar. 🌿 🪶 Learn more: birdcast.info

Now, more than ever, let's come together as a country and hold space for Canadian movies We're all buying Canadian. But we should watch Canadian, too! www.cbc.ca/arts/holding...

A great list of some really good Canadian movies! Another industry where we stopped supporting our own for zero reason. We have a lot of Canadian talent, let's make it more profitable for them to make movies and grow families in Canada.

Change perception, change the world. We can afford to save the future, prove that you want to.

Must watch ⤵️

In the biggest crisis of our lifetimes, we need serious leadership and a real plan.

We will be losing many urban trees just like this in the near future. Look at the impermeable pavement all around them, how was it expected to survive? All trees in urban settings were planted like this. Municipalities should have been planting replacements 20 years ago.

This time of year trends in sea ice concentration are confined to the very outer edges of the #Arctic Ocean. Losses of concentration are smallest in March and April (around the annual maximum). Sea ice concentration = fraction of ice-cover (observed by satellite). More info: doi.org/10.1175/BAMS...

Throughout the federal election campaign, I am looking at elections from Canada's past. Today, it is the 1935 election. Failure to mitigate The Great Depression's impact hurt the Conservatives badly as the Liberals began 22 years in power. 🧵1/10

Someone who’s been convicted of violent offences — especially intimate partner violence — should not be allowed to own a gun. My government will automatically revoke their licences.

We thought this was a great presentation! Give a watch to this Wild Ones webinar to learn how native plant gardens shift landscaping norms, foster biodiversity and educate communities about sustainable practices while advancing native plant advocacy. #nativeplants vist.ly/3mzhmsm

In Polygonaceae, the ocrea, that cylindrical structure above the node (here in Coccoloba uvifera), is believed to be homologous to a stipule. In other families, ocreas may be modified sheathing leaf bases. Homology is very difficult to determine & requires ontogenetic study. #stipule #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Native to Ontario, blooms mid to late May, a member of the Prunus genus supporting over 300 pollinators. "Serotina" means late and references the lateness of the arrival of the flowers compared to other Prunus sp. which bloom mid to late April in Ontario. Older trees have dark scaly bark.

I’m rewatching The Last of Us Season 1 and I thought I would share little bits of Canadian history when I find them. The Lethbridge Viaduct, built between 1907 and 1909. It is the largest railroad structure in Canada and the largest of its type in the world.

Extinction is one of the most depressing things there is. I totally get wanting to reverse it. BUT. There are things you can be doing right now to PREVENT further extinctions. Consider how you're using your property (even if you rent). Can you create habitat on the area you control? This helps!

Fences transform Western landscapes and devastate wildlife. Fencing laid out for livestock fragments habitat, weakens biodiversity and kills pronghorn who get stuck. One study suggests there may be 620k miles of fence in the West: enough to span to the moon and back. wyofile.com/thousands-of...

Opposite, compound leaves with stipules are uncommon. Here’s a family that does it: Cunoniaceae, a family in the Oxalidales most abundant in the S. Hemisphere. The stipules are interpetiolar. This is Pancheria billardierei of New Caledonia. #stipule #Cononiaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

People will say they didn't know they killed the last, they will lie to themselves and future generations: don't let them. Everyone knows they are killing the birds, the bees, the animals and the trees; they just don't care.

Throughout the federal election campaign, I am looking at elections from Canada's past. Today, it is the 1925 election! This election saw the Liberals finish with fewer seats than the Conservatives but hold onto power with support from the other parties. 🧵1/10

Ceanothus (#Rhamnaceae) is divided into 2 subgenera based (in part) on stipules! Subgen. Cerastes (=“horned”) has persistent, corky stipules, a pair with each leaf. Subg. Ceanothus has thin, deciduous stipules. This is C. crassifolius with those fantastic horns! 📷: BJ Stacey CCBYNC4 #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Another ephemeral starting to emerge is Aquilegia canadensis (Wild Columbine). One thing you’ll notice is the striking purple foliage. Many spring plants contain Anthocyanins which act as sunscreen, frost protection and heat absorber. As they mature they’ll fade to their normal green. #nativePlants

Throughout the federal election campaign, I am looking at elections from Canada's past. Today, it is the 1921 election! This was the first election that the majority of women could vote in, and it saw a shakeup of the political map. 🧵1/12
