I work best when I set a time-based goal for my writing rather than one based on progress -- like on weeknights I work for half an hour, for example. I find it helps me with work-life balance and prevents me feeling frustrated by necessary tasks that don't produce "more" words/pages/etc #AskAnAuthor

A wee Friday Fix the News update for you: "The Global South is deploying renewables twice as fast as the Global North, thanks to record levels of investment and decreasing costs of clean power." (Source: rmi.org/the-global-s...)

#3GoodThings for 21-Feb-2025 1. New video game demos to try out 2. An evening plan I'm fully excited for 3. Books

Good morning, indulgent cheat days of Bluesky! Today's kindness upgrade is a damn break. Next week I have to travel to say goodbye to a relative I had a complex relationship with, and I need to mentally carbo-load for that so I do not leave us high and dry for the rest of the fight. <3

"Angel in Black" by Shepherds Reign; one of the most driving, heavy songs you have probably never heard and really should -- Maori heavy metal is hard to top.

Another Vibes #WIPSnips for you: "Um," said Orm. "Yes, Orm?" Zeal asked, and as he raised his head to do so: "What in the inverted sky?" Vesper looked through the doorway at where Orm was pointing, and blinked. Apparently Level Twelve was an art gallery. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Your Thursday media rec: If you have not read it yet and you love yourself a Gothic, a villain protagonist, or a body horror, read The Monster of Elendhaven by Jennifer Giesbrecht. CW for gore, gore, and more gore. bookshop.org/p/books/the-...

Public comment is now open for passport gender marker changes. You can go here to go to each of the three proposed passport rules, and submit comment. My suggestion: be unique, argue for trans-inclusive policies, against the constitutionality of the changes, etc. www.reddit.com/r/Passports/...

The other big problem with using generative AI to help you write is that it makes you a huge fuckin loser

#3GoodThings for 2/20/25 1. One day closer to extinguishing a major personal dumpster fire 2. Quiet reading night right when I need it 3. Books

Your Thursday cat cleanse: Yoga Jen has gone to the next level.

Good morning, inventive cocktails of Bluesky! Today's kindness upgrades is registering for next week's POHC meeting and making the Chop Wood, Carry Water calls from yesterday's newsletter. We are doing enough. <3

My mid-week selfie a day late because I was out past my bedtime at queer game night -- thought I'd take this candid at the brewery after we finished a successful game of Sentinels vs. Terrorform. Congrats on making it halfway through the week! One day closer to the light. <3

Behold, the cover in all its adorable glory!

Choose 20 books that have stayed with you or influenced you. One book per day for 20 days, in no particular order. No explanations, no reviews, just covers. #Books 📖 #BookSky 💙📚 #BookChallenge Book 4/20

#3GoodThings for 19-Feb-2025 1. Leftover pizza 2. Board game-related plans (and a backup plan for if they fall through) 3. My need to watch Yellowjackets giving me access to the second season of School Spirits.

Wednesday self-promo meme: earnest edition. Want something to read? I write fantasy! Buy links at tyler-hayes.com. My novel is THE IMAGINARY CORPSE, about an ex-imaginary friend confronting trauma, anxiety, and the first serial killer of ideas: www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/609709...

Good morning, savory pastries of Bluesky! Today's kindness upgrade is some community building and recharging with queer game night. Reminding myself that every moment we find joy in art and games and each other, we are living more deeply than the bastards are capable of in a lifetime.

Making Things Log for the week of 17-Feb-2025: It's been a week of just chugging along and finding joy in just chugging along. Writing: I'm about 50% of the way through the penultimate edit pass, then it's time to find a sensitivity reader. Looking good to start querying in spring. (cont.)

Just learned that A BEGINNING AT THE END is on Kindle sale for $2.99. Get this book for cozy post-pandemic vibes (released in Jan 2020!), a society that trusts in science, discussions about found family and post-pandemic mental health, and many indie rock references. www.amazon.com/dp/B07QKD5TT...

#3GoodThings for 18-Jan-2025 1. A full, good night's sleep. 2. The Monster of Elendhaven by Jennifer Giesbrecht 3. Unflavored Greek yogurt for my ice-giant muscles

Your Tuesday cat cleanse: Jen lost in thought and/or bliss during her morning snuggles.

The Monster of Elendhaven by Jennifer Giesbrecht. Delicious gaslamp fantasy about a superhuman mass murderer and his will-they-won't-they wizard partner-in-crime. Less dark than it sounds but just as dark as you want it to be.

Good morning, blood-pumping basslines of Bluesky! Today's kindness upgrade was a call to thank my Rep for being part of the Courage Caucus and ask what support he needs, and putting a bunch of holds in at my local library for my upcoming road trip. Whatever you are doing, you are helping! <3

More "vibes" because the WIP doesn't mention candy: "The word ‘crush’ stirred up those warm feelings that Zeal refused to name, and so the intrusive thoughts did it instead—happiness—and he had to deal with that dash of sugar in the usual curdled milk of his thoughts." #WIPSnips

Monday mental health check-in, 17-Feb-2025: the thread is open until 24-Feb-2025 if you need to check in about how you're doing. I'll start!

#3GoodThings for 17-Feb-2025 1. A full night's sleep (complete with falling asleep successfully after a mid-morning anxiety wakeup) 2. Getting one day closer to extinguishing one of my dumpster fires 3. Books

Good morning, defiant chin tilts of Bluesky! Today's kindness upgrade has been making the calls suggested by Jess Craven's Chop Wood, Carry Water newsletter while I wait for AABB and POHC work, and dealing with some family stuff that I am best positioned to handle. You are doing enough!

Tonight was D&D, and we just got to the big twist in the officially published "Planescape: Turn of Fortune's Wheel" campaign and this might be one of the dopest things I have done in a D&D campaign. If you loved Planescape: Torment you owe this one to yourself.

The latest finished Lego project: Leonardo DaVinci and his flying machine.
