Happy Birthday to women's rights advocate Amelia Bloomer. She owned and edited The Lily and publicized the pants named after her. Below are 1851 cover images from the Bloomer Waltz (costume for summer) composed by William Dessier and The New Costume Polka composed for the piano by Martha Keller.🗃️

#Detroit was named by the French? I will never say it the same way again. #funfact #history

The outbreak of witchcraft accusations occurred in #Salem Village, now Danvers, though the trials were held at Salem in 1692. #puritans #history #newengland

Only #fools and #charlatans know everything and understand nothing. #AntonCheckov

Okay, it’s time to read Stacy Schiff’s book “The Witches: Salem, 1692.” #puritans #history

In the Mass. Bay Colony, a “Cheny” was something that could have been hung on a wall or bed post. Not a tapestry, not a rug, not a curtain. Something along those lines though. Perhaps the name comes from the family making them. Maybe the method, fabric, design made it unique. #puritan #history

A pair of U.K. scholars discovered the mislabeled document in Harvard Law School's digital archives. The university bought it for just $27.50 in 1946. It turned out to be an authentic copy dating to 1300.

The 'kin' of ‘napkin’ means "little." ‘Nap’ comes from ‘nape,' which means “tablecloth.” So a napkin is a little tablecloth. 10/10, no notes.

I think I’ll find the #puritans won’t meet the stereotypes. We shall see.

Ben Franklin on inoculation, after his son died from smallpox. “In 1736, I lost one of my sons, a fine boy of four years old, by the small-pox, taken in the common way. I long regretted bitterly, and still regret that I had not given it to him by inoculation”.

She painted the rich and royal—from Czar Nicholas II to Consuelo Vanderbilt—and then vanished from history. Meet Amalia Kussner, the Gilded Age’s most in-demand miniature portraitist. Read my Q&A with Kathleen Langone here: tinyurl.com/37kkd4n9 🗃️

How many of the #puritans of the Great Migration were descendants of the #Normaninvasion ? Because both sides of my family match this. Seems it would give them the financial boost to make the journey, considering strict admission rules as well. #history #skystory

How much evidence is out there that Oliver Cromwell (who was actually a Williams, but took surname of great uncle Thomas Cromwell) was related to Roger Williams of Rhode Island fame? Wiki Tree connects them at Morgan Williams. Fascinating. #history #tudor #skystorian

Just learnt the wonderful, obsolete term 'malebouche', last heard in Tudor times, meaning slander.

Hey, academics! Have you signed a book contract lately? You should report your royalty/advance rate anonymously on this spreadsheet. Are you negotiating, or about to be negotiating, a book contract? You should take a look at the spreadsheet. docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Since becoming a #SAHM I think I’ve stopped pronouncing the “T” at the end of words… is that an upstate New York accent i was covering up for work or is this what happens when you aren’t socialized? I need to know. #linguistics

Tried something different with this embroidery. Usually I like larger lettering...

Can a #skystorian tell me what a “blue grogram or Cheney” was in 1652? #history #puritans

Interesting! "Medieval artists were not trying to depict animals accurately. They're not trying to do photorealism. They're trying to communicate certain things about the world around them through the depiction of animals." 🗃️ #medievalsky #arthistory #medieval www.abc.net.au/news/2025-03...

In 1628 Parliament forced King Charles to admit he was NOT above the law with the “Petition of Right.” This was followed by the dissolution of parliament and authoritarian rule, the assassination of Charles’ favorite stooge, eventual civil war, beheading of a king and a republic. #history #skystory

Remember: Almost all of us are the descendants of immigrants who fled persecution, or were brought to America under duress, or sought better lives for themselves and their descendants. Politicians who stoke fear and hatred over immigration want you to forget this. Do not.

The city of drivers and freeways expands, relentlessly and inevitably, into sprawl. The city of pedestrians, cyclists, and transit-users contracts elegantly into itself.

A Massachussetts court record from 1666… “John Chany, of Nubare, presented for threatening the children of James Mirack that he would knock their brains out if they came upon his ground.” Colloquially we’ve been "knocking brains out" for hundreds of years. #historysky #puritan
