small complaint in a world falling apart but one of the biggest small annoyances of contingent academic life is the massive proliferation of emails, logins, and online systems work at a uni for a semester, get an email, not rehired, lose the email, rehired after a year, get a diff email, repeat

shooting international journalists who are reporting on police brutality is not a distraction, it *is* their policy Trump is about both violence and deregulation/wealth extraction, an impossible combo, one will have to give

“the authoritarian military takeover of los angeles is a distraction from tax cuts” will you listen to yourself man

You will always see the right and center blaming the left for the right-wing's crimes

When people said “abolish ICE,” this is why. The politicians from both parties who called that “radical,” blindly funded them and called it “immigration reform,” because they were getting campaign donations from the corporations getting ICE contracts. And now we’re here.

the fact that this is both illegal *and* the new normal shows exactly how Trump intends to govern

the point of protests is that they are inherently "illegitimate" expressions of dissent in a society where "legitimate" expressions of dissent are either impossible or so insufficient that they become a joke

Trump has a fundamental misunderstanding of how to be an authoritarian. He seems to think that now he's at the top, he can't ever lose power and can piss off whomever he wants. This is not true! You need the Army and business leaders on your side at a minimum.

extremely good point -- Naziism worked great for you if you were a member of the military or the Party (before the war, that is) members of Trump's coalition get...?

Statistically “America” is its cities. But we’re stuck with an 18th century political architecture that gives votes to cornfields & thus makes it politically viable to treat them as some kind of weird tumor.

That officer took deliberate aim at this journalist and shot her. There's nobody standing near her.

important note: the LAPD has figured out it can get footage from Waymos: www.404media.co/lapd-publish...

During the dictatorships in South America the words they used were "subversive" and "criminal"

I think the easiest historical way to view this is that these are a bunch of white men of a certain age who fantasize about going back in time and murdering every person of color who dared protest over the Rodney King trial verdict. And here they are, salivating at sending the army to LA.

Trump is at a UFC fight tonight as Pentagon announces it is deploying federalized National Guard troops in California. Very weird/disturbing alignment. Historic moment perhaps. Pool reports included here from Myah Ward White House reporter

“We do not seem to be returning to a world in which the center left and the center right compete over tax rates or budgets,” @anneapplebaum.bsky.social writes. “Policy arguments just don’t matter as much to people right now as these deeper cultural divides.”

The Base is one of the more violent neo-Nazi organizations out there

i’m a mainstream democrat and i know two things that are 100% true: 1. kamala harris’ plan to allow small businesses to take a standard $50k deduction on start up expenses when filing their taxes spoke directly the american working class 2. any amount of mild criticism means you voted for trump

The worst person you met at the worst frat party you ever went to is leading anti terrorism in the USA

NEW: A recent college grad now leads the Trump admin's terrorism prevention efforts. If I drank coffee, I would've spit it out reading this amazing story from @propublica.org's @hannahallam.bsky.social. www.propublica.org/article/trum...

the National Guard is being mobilized to invade and occupy the United States to enforce Trump's anti immigration race war www.stripes.com/branches/arm...

we have transformed all urban and suburban space into a killing field, and then blame the dead and their loved ones for trying to live their lives

get in loser we're doing Monarchianism

Dude promoted the Protocols

folks, i implore you, remember every other time you thought "CERTAINLY he can't come back from this one? surely this is curtains for Trump? Right? ...right?"

why do folks seem to think that joe six pack will side with Elon Musk, a tech bro they associate with San Francisco, over Donald Trump?

do you think Trump's base will chose him over Musk? why?

Musk might be about to find out that money isn't power, only power is power

god this shit rules

hahahahahahahahahahhahahahahaha (breath) hahahahahahaha

one of my biggest weird takes: thinking about the world in terms of numbers in the first place (95 percent right) is a huge part of the problem, that's simply not how ideas work but STEM focus and positivism has us thinking we can measure correctness and truth

I think the thing that is most viscerally shocking about the AI "debate" is how many people suddenly think small mistakes are no big deal, even where precision is everything. Like a legal brief that is based on 95% real citations is almost as good as one that is based on 100% real citations

read the thread - the Harris campaign made a lot of campaign promises but they all have caveats and carve outs these do not capture hearts and minds or make headlines

In 2009, “Mencius Moldbug” aka Curtis Yarvin (Peter Thiel’s “house philosopher”) wrote at length on his “Unqualified Reservations” blog about “Harvard and state.” Trump’s targeting of Harvard reeks of Moldbug’s “philosophy”. 1/ www.unqualified-reservations.org/2009/01/gent...

the nationalist/racist right-wing and the libertarian right-wing were always strange bedfellows -- if this means changes for Trump's coalition it might weaken him, or it might mean he no longer needs to worry about keeping the businesspeople happy and can carry on with his race war

I’m not going to sit here and allow people to talk down to one of America’s most successful paramilitary officers

side effect of AI-in-higher-ed: having to spend my ONE WILD AND PRECIOUS LIFE googling footnotes for articles that I can't believe I missed off my reading lists only to discover that they aren't, in fact, real articles

Check out today's episode of Fifteen Minutes of Fascism, a sadly topical podcast covering the global rise of the radical right: soundcloud.com/user-6272349...

I'm not a political scientist but if you're advice to the Democratic Party is pushing out unions, immigrants, and queers then I think there's already a party for that

if the base gets mad, they win if the base is indifferent, money wins
