Cuts to NSF expected to be at 50% reduction in force for an independent agency that fuels discovery and innovation. "The NSF budget was $9B, or 0.13% of the total [budget]." This is not about fiscal prudence. This is about killing universities. nanoscale.blogspot.com/2025/02/the-...

I'm losing my mind here with PowerPoint. Does anyone know why PPT when saving, closing, and then opening again, butchers the quality and transparency of certain assets? There is no discernible pattern because all are imported the same from the same file format. All my assets are saved as .pdf πŸ§ͺ

Remember when Mitch McConnell said this? Oh wait, no, he was too busy twisting every rule he could to delay and deny the Democratic process. The old rules of decorum in politics are no longer in effect. Haven't been for a while. Dems need to switch strategies, like yesterday.

Pictures are not doing the fabric justice but Elvis worm beanie complete!! Happy #WormWednesday ! πŸ‘πŸ¦‘πŸ™

I was just an Education Department guy under Reagan and the most junior WH senior staffer under G.H.W. Bush, so what do I know? But if I were an ex-president, and the current president were executing the most disastrous turn in American foreign policy in 80 years, I think I might say something?

Hello Bluesky! This is the account of the Cereal Symbiosis Lab run by Prof. Uta Paszkowski at @cropscicentre.bsky.social @camplantsci.bsky.social, researching arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis in cereal crops πŸ„πŸŒΎπŸŒ½ Looking forward to reconnecting with the mycorrhiza community on this new platform!

Happy Valentine’s Day! Don’t forget to text your crush a squid fact today 😘

Saludos, Skylings. For this UW pic, I was literally upside down. In Lembeh, dives are so good, it can happen you empty the tank πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ and it goes really buoyant (alu tank) 🀬. I had to fin hard against the surface to stay down. The frame was also upside down in my viewfinder! πŸ¦‘πŸŒŠ #UnderwaterPhotography

Nature valentines. Thanks to my Patrons for keeping me drawing www.patreon.com/birdandmoon

#marinelife Two similar pictures from the Florida Keys. The keys have been in bad shape from over diving, but the recent heat events were the nail in the coffin. Even the worst spots had some coral in 2019. Picture two from 2024 shows it is almost all dead now.

Hardly new info, but BSky should know: Warsaw's water quality is monitored by eight clams with magnets attached to their shells. If contamination in the water causes the clams to close, the magnets trigger an alarm and shut off the city's water supply. Thank you, little guardian molluscs. πŸ§ͺ🌏🚰

New paper on cryptic coral lineages in St. Croix, USVI πŸͺΈπŸ§¬ The first five authors are undergraduates- very proud of these rising scientists πŸŽ‰ This work was done in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy @nature.org and @heatshok.bsky.social. Check it out! journals.plos.org/plosone/arti...

The world: πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯ Me: let's dissociate and talk about the hard coral genus, Pachyseris, which includes the "Elephant Skin" coral, Pachyersis rugosa (which I got tattoo'd on my leg recently) πŸ¦‘πŸͺΈπŸ§ͺ #CoralReefs

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

Today is Retraction Day, when we observe the anniversary of the retraction (Feb. 2, 2010) of the fraudulent paper that purported to show a link between vaccines and autism. πŸ§ͺ#medsky

Just got on Bluesky so intro time! I’m a marine biologist who loves kelp and does research on mariculture in Alaska. Stay tuned for cool #phycologyfriday posts and news about my new postdoc at the Prince William Sound Science Center πŸŒ±πŸŒŠπŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸ”¬πŸ§ͺ #seaweed #phycology #womeninSTEM

Anyone else not a fan of the "Tr*mp admin is incompetent and stupid" narrative? We consistently underestimated them in 2016 and 2024, and I think this mindset has contributed to it, while also giving them some leeway to say "oops didn't know sorry πŸ™‚".

In case some people have missed it, I'm re-posting a link to our paper on the Anaeramoeba-Desulfobacter symbiotic system. This is one of the papers from my lab that I'm most proud of...and a huge amount of the credit goes to @jonhultqvist.bsky.social !!! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

To those that have been following me on my academic journey while I get nearer to my defense: I've decided to delay my defense until the Summer. This grants me more time to look for next steps. My current postdoc apps would be funded by federal agencies, and the current situation is scary.

Helloooo? Horseshoe crab is that you?

So I've talked before about hard corals that can move. These are solitary corals such as the Fungiid in this image below. Well someone's recorded a video of one of these Fungiids moving, and they learned well from the ameboid ancestors: www.science.org/content/arti... πŸ§ͺπŸ¦‘ #coralreefs
