#FieldPhotoFriday Throwback to a site installation in 93, then refitting in 2012! This site CI.BAC named after its location on Bachelor Mountain is situated in an area directly between the Elsinore and San Jacinto Fault zones, it has been recording and sending data for eqs in 2 major seismic regions

This is a reminder that with the recent Jan 2025 fires in SoCal still in our memory, and with many still being impacted, we're still surveying how people received and responded to the emergency alerts sent during these fires.

M3.6 15km NW of #Grapevine, CA, #SouthernCalifornia #Earthquake confirmed valid. Updated analysis coming soon @ buff.ly/5HE96XD

Recently our field crew has been visiting seismic sites with Frank Vernon from UCSD who leads the High Performance Research and Education Network (HPWREN). They have been collaborating to facilitate the SCSN absorbing some of their AZ sites near Anza, mainly to help fill gaps in our network.

#DAS is a big topic in seismology—and #SCSN + the Seismo Lab are leading the way. We're the first in the US to integrate DAS into a real-time seismic system, with 7 live Ridgecrest channels running now. Machine learning will help us go even further! Watch our Ridgecrest DAS feed live

Weekly Earthquake Stats: 27 Apr 2025 - 03 MAY 2025. There were 337 events this week ranging from M -0.06 to 3.97. Check out our weekly playback map and visit www.scsn.org for detailed information. #earthquakes #seismology #SCSN #weeklystats @CaltechSeismo

#FieldPhotoFriday The Southern California Seismic Network has been around for a very long time, and we've had seismic stations continuously recording data since 1932! Which makes this station near Little Late, originally installed in 1975, and updated regularly since, reasonably young comparatively!

The Seismo Lab would like to congratulate Jean-Philippe Avouac for being elected to the National Academy of Sciences! Jean-Philippe will become a member of Section 15 (Geology) when he officially signs into 'the big book' next spring! This is a tremendous accomplishment! buff.ly/hf92XKG

What do fiber optic cables have to do with volcanic eruptions in Iceland? Surprising, a lot! In Nov '23 Jiaxuan Li and other researchers, working out of the Zhongwhen Zhan DAS lab jumped into action when a new eruption began on the Reykjanes Peninsula! buff.ly/abMrOpa

#FieldPhotoFriday Back from the beach and up into the mountains, sometimes the field techs need to go even higher! Atop an antenna at the peak of a mountain near Lake Arrowhead to be exact! Climbing can be a regular part of the job, they do what it takes to keep the data flowing!

About a month ago when the USGS, SeismoLab, and USC deployed 58 temporary sensors in Malibu to monitor the 2 active swarms in the region. The time came this week to go grab them! It will be exciting to see what data and insights come from this deployment! buff.ly/MPjFU0u

Ever wondered what a Regional Seismic Network (RSN) is, does, and why they matter? The Seismological Society of America (SSA) explains well, while also using the #SCSN as one of their examples. These networks help keep seismically active regions informed, alert, and ready. buff.ly/0uYf7T5

We host many data sets for research. This one is to test real time algorithms like EEW, which can alert before the full quake size is known and large ruptures have even finished! We encourage researchers to test out their more advanced algorithms with this data set. scedc.caltech.edu/data/eewtest...

Weekly Earthquake Stats: 13 Apr 2025 - 19 APR 2025. There were 681 events this week ranging from M 0.00 to 5.21. The Julian sequence really bumped up the week's total! Check out our weekly playback map and visit www.scsn.org for detailed information. #earthquakes #seismology #SCSN #weeklystats

#SSA2025 Great to see so many from the Seismo Lab, @Caltech, #SCSN, @USGS, and many more sharing their work—from EEW research to DAS advances. Conferences like this are invaluable for connecting with peers, exchanging ideas, and spreading new science. See you next year!

#FieldPhotoFriday After fire damage from the recent Airport Fire, station CI.ELS2 (and co-located CI.ELSG) near Lake Elsinore is back online thanks to our field crew! On March 19, they fully rebuilt the site—new enclosure, panels, cables, everything. Huge thanks to the land owner for access!

Another big shoutout and congrats to Jiuxun Yin, former #SeismoLab postdoc and now working in the oil industry! His paper "Earthquake Magnitude With DAS: A Transferable Data‐Based Scaling Relation", in Geophysical Research Letters, ranked in the top 10% most-viewed for 2023! #TopViewedArticle

Congrats to former #SeismoLab postdoc Francesco Civilini (now @NASA)! He led the study, "Thermal Moonquake Characterization and Cataloging Using Frequency-Based Algorithms and Stochastic Gradient Descent" that ranked in the top 10% most-viewed papers in JGR: Planets for 2023! #TopViewedArticle

#SSA2025 kicks off this week in Baltimore! Seismo Lab scientists are there—stay tuned for where to find them. Conferences like this are vital to science, fostering collaboration, sharing new ideas, and advancing our understanding of earthquakes. buff.ly/P15nWBZ

Curious what the waveforms from the Julian M5.2 at 10:08am PDT look like? For all you quakewatchers, here is the snapshot from our Live Seismograms Feed as the energy crossed the Southern California Seismic Network buff.ly/7eRvyGy
