I grew up in far-right evangelism. They absolutely voted for this to happen…to someone else. While I understand the social media algo hypothesis, the surprise for many of these folks arises entirely from difficulties reasoning about their relationship to government policy enforcement.

Ngl, there are few petty social media behaviors that I've enjoyed more than Tesla owners becoming a laughing stock. I now routinely see "Tesla owner(s)" used to describe ppl who buy low-quality products believing they're a signifier of high status.
