"The Unassuming 7/10" honestly might be my favorite type of game, nothing quite like taking a chance on a budget platformer and being pleasantly surprised by an experience that punches above its weight and doesn't outstay its welcome

#1: Astro Bot - A perfect celebration of 3D platforming and PlayStation as a whole, Astro Bot is the rare game where the only complaint you can make about it is that it ends. I hope its success and critical acclaim sends a message to the rest of the industry - make more games like this.

#2: Sonic x Shadow Generations: For the first time in what feels like forever, we finally have a Sonic game that fans and non-fans alike can agree on. Shadow Gens is peak Sonic and the ultimate iteration of the boost formula. Where can Sonic Team go from here? I'm so excited to find out.

#3: Ufouria: The Saga 2 - Short but sweet and perfectly paced, Ufouria 2 is the best 2D platformer you've never heard of. It evokes Kirby's Epic Yarn in both its craftwork art-style and relaxing gameplay, and its quirky characters are so deranged yet lovable. Can't recommend it enough.

#4: Tamagotchi Adventure Kingdom - Tamagotchi finally gets its first great video game, a stellar combination of Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing with some genuinely great writing. Apple Arcade exclusivity limits its reach quite a bit, so hopefully it gets a console port in the future.

#5: Infinity Nikki - In a world where every gacha is centered around making number go up to fight increasingly spongy enemies (including ZZZ), it's a breath of fresh air for a game like Nikki to be centered purely around light 3D platforming and playing dress-up. I hope this is the start of a trend!

#6: Zenless Zone Zero - It feels insane that a game with such immaculate vibes and production values is free to play, but I suppose that's to be expected from MiHoYo. I tapped out after a few updates because it's just hard for me to stay addicted to a gacha, but what a time it was.

#7: Pokemon TCG Pocket - Every time I try to get back into the traditional Pokemon TCG I'm immediately turned off by how complex and Yugioh-like it's become, but Pocket does a wonderful job of dumbing the mechanics down while retaining a ton of depth. Great for those who just want to collect too.

#8: Palworld - All controversies aside, Palworld does a remarkable job of bringing a sense of wonder and freedom back to the monster taming genre that I haven't felt since the Game Boy. The fact that blowing away cute critters with AR-15s is really funny helps too.

#9: Helldivers 2 - D3 has repeatedly tried and failed to create a westernized take on Earth Defense Force, only for Arrowhead to nail it on the first try. Fighting massive hordes of monstrous bugs and killer robots has never felt this cinematic yet hilarious. An instant classic.

#10: Brighter Shores - The creator of RuneScape returns with another surprisingly addictive "second-screen MMO", and I'm not usually an MMO guy. While it's still in early access, the frequent updates show this has the potential to be something really great.

Honorable Mention #1: Nintendo Switch Online Playtest Program - I'm not even allowed to say why this is on here, but suffice to say it's going to have a lot of people hooked when it comes out for real. Such an obtuse, weird, and fascinating game. And now, for the real Top 10:

Honorable Mention #2: Game Center CX 1+2 Replay - An amazing tribute to the experience of being a gamer in the 80s and 90s, and one that I enjoyed even more than UFO 50. I wish I could put it higher, but the lack of an English translation makes it a bit hard to recommend to the average player.

Honorable Mention #3: Foamstars - Incredibly fun Splatoon-like with really satisfying movement mechanics once you get a handle on them. Unfortunately, various factors like PS5 exclusivity and questionable monetization seem to have killed the player base for this one pretty quickly.

Yeah, there's a point where these just start feeling needlessly cynical. At least the Sonic one had fitting stuff like chili dogs and "gold" onion rings, Halo is not a brand I would associate with any foods really. If you removed the logo from this cover I'd have no idea it's even Halo related.

The worst thing about Amiibo Festival is that there's almost a great board game in there with stuff like the stalk market and the unique holiday events for each month, but those elements are so random and/or half-baked that every game ultimately just comes down to dumb luck.

The lack of an official Sonic account was unironically one of the few things keeping me from fully switching to Bluesky, this would be fantastic.

Yeah, it was a much easier sell when it had the prestige of being hard to get a hold of and the very cool gimmick of 24 weekly mystery games for the community to discover and play together, but now that those aspects are gone it's hard to ignore that it costs the same as a Switch Lite.

It's basically a hipster Game Boy. The library is ~90% short experimental novelty games, usually trying incredibly hard to be quirky and twee. If that's up your alley then it's worth it. Personally I wish there were some more straightforward platformers or RPGs but it's a fine handheld regardless.

I love this design and to this day it's still my favorite shirt I own. I wore a previous Lammy design you made until it literally fell apart right around the time this shirt came out, so I was really happy to be able to replace it with one that featured the entire PaRappa cast!

Who could forget Zkoopa? I still talk with Km along with a few others from there. As for how I've been... overall, pretty good I'd say! I've made some cartoons, worked on some video games, got into a relationship, received a few death threats, won the lottery. You know, the usual.
