BREAKING: CLC sent a letter demanding the Federal Election Commission reject President Trump's unconstitutional attempt to seize the independent agency's powers through executive order. Full statement by CLC president & former FEC chair @thetrevorpotter.bsky.social⬇️ campaignlegal.org/document/cam...

🧵I sent a letter to the Federal Election Commission today demanding the agency quickly, unanimously and unambiguously reject President Trump’s executive order claiming sweeping authority over independent government agencies like the FEC. 1/

Abandoning the rule of law opens the door to corruption and chaos. The stakes are indeed high in this unprecedented time of challenge our constitutional structure. My latest newsletter: www.linkedin.com/pulse/amidst...

"It is a red flag that the White House has not said that any ethics professionals are involved in reviewing Musk’s actions. More transparency and accountability are needed." -CLC's Kedric Payne

With the Supreme Court's weakening of the federal Voting Rights Act over the years, a flurry of anti-voter laws have been enacted that disproportionately harm Black Americans. Given federal inaction, states need to step up to protect the freedom to vote.

Every voice should be heard, and every vote should count. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 bans racial discrimination in voting — but it’s been under attack, especially in recent decades. It's beyond time to strengthen and expand the VRA.

Our team argued in the D.C. Circuit Court this week, on behalf of @endcitizensunited.bsky.social, in a major lawsuit against the Federal Election Commission over the agency's refusal to enforce campaign finance law. CLC's Kevin P. Hancock delivered arguments before all 11 judges on the court.

“Our democracy works best when every American can participate in it without barriers. We’re glad that the 9th Circuit sees these laws for what they are: anti-voter.” 🙌👏 @campaignlegal.org www.votebeat.org/arizona/2025...

TODAY: The Senate Judiciary Committee is holding the confirmation hearing for Harmeet Dhillon, Trump's pick for Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. Her record of election denialism and anti-voter stances raise major doubts about her fitness to serve in the role.🧵

The richest man in the world donated millions of dollars to a presidential campaign and was given unfettered power and access in return. We need to reform our campaign finance system to combat the corrosive impact of big money in politics.

BREAKING: In a major victory for voters, the 9th Circuit keeps two anti-voter laws in Arizona BLOCKED. The laws would have imposed severe, arbitrary and discriminatory burdens on Latino, Native and student voters in Arizona — violating the Constitution and federal law.

Wealthy special interests are buying our elections, and they’re bending federal regulations to do it.
It’s time to hand power back to the people. It’s time to close FEC special interest loopholes.

🚨NOW: We're at the D.C. Circuit with @endcitizensunited.bsky.social in a major lawsuit over the Federal Election Commission's refusal to enforce campaign finance law. The FEC allowed a loophole exploited by wealthy special interests to influence our vote. The court must step in to uphold the law.

It's been months since Election Day, but the 2024 race for North Carolina Supreme Court is not over. The losing candidate is in court trying to throw out 65k+ ballots. One person cannot overthrow an election just because they don’t like the results.

During Trump's first term, inspectors general played a key part in preventing corruption and calling out ethical violations. During his second term? He fired them.

The Trump administration has put sweeping changes in place across the federal government, but the anti-democratic transformation underway at the DOJ is worth special attention given the agency’s strong history of pro-voter actions.

On this day in 1940, democracy champion and civil rights leader John Lewis was born. Throughout his life, he fervently advocated for the freedom to vote. At CLC, we honor his legacy by ensuring all Americans can participate meaningfully in the democratic process.

NEW: We filed a complaint urging the FEC to pursue NYC Mayor Eric Adams for funneling foreign money into his campaigns. While the Justice Department has dropped its charges against Adams, the FEC has the duty to act and enforce our campaign finance laws. campaignlegal.org/update/fec-m...

Just as politicians should not be able to use positions of power to enrich themselves, billionaire campaign donors should not be able to buy political influence and use that influence to line their own pockets.

Just another reminder...

The SAVE Act would: ❌impose unnecessary barriers to the voter registration process ❌eliminate mail registration and upend online registration ❌mandate error-ridden voter purges ❌threaten election workers and more. Congress must reject this bill.

The Trump admin is dismantling efforts to combat foreign influence in our elections, including disbanding an FBI unit tasked with confronting foreign threats. It is vital to combat foreign interference, but this action sends the opposite message to voters.

Tennessee has one of the most draconian voting rights restoration processes. That's why we're in court today defending the freedom to vote for our client, Ernest Falls. Despite taking all the necessary steps after a felony conviction in 1986, he is still unable to vote in TN.

Elon Musk is firing the government watchdogs that regulate his own companies. That’s a massive conflict of interest — and it gives him the ability to line his own pockets at the expense of the American people.

🧵BREAKING: CLC has filed a complaint demanding an FEC investigation of NYC Mayor Eric Adams. He broke the law prohibiting all foreign contributions in U.S. elections and undermined American democracy by inviting and coordinating foreign contributions to his mayoral campaigns. 1/

BREAKING: CLC has filed a complaint with the FEC regarding NYC Mayor Eric Adams, who allegedly broke campaign finance law by facilitating foreign interference in his mayoral campaigns. With the DOJ refusing to hold Adams accountable, the FEC has a duty to protect our elections.

A nonpartisan civil service is essential to preserving our system of checks and balances and ensuring that our government serves the people — not just a political party or any one president.

This #PresidentsDay, here's our reminder: The president is not a king. Our system of checks and balances is in place to ensure this very fact. We'll continue our tireless work to uphold this system, the Constitution and the rule of law.

The SAVE Act could silence millions of voters by creating new barriers to voter registration that would make it harder for Americans to make their voices heard. Here's how.

Join us next week for a live conversation with David Daley, author of "Antidemocratic," and CLC's Bruce V. Spiva. They will explore recent attacks on the freedom to vote and what pro-democracy advocates can do to protect this freedom. Reserve your spot: campaignlegal.org/events/antid...

Enforcement priorities change after a new president selects their leaders at the Department of Justice. But what we're seeing today should alarm everyone who believes in the rule of law, free and fair elections and the importance of an independent DOJ. 1/2

Elon Musk has significant opportunities to advance his own personal business interests via DOGE. As a “special government employee,” Musk is prohibited from engaging in matters affecting his businesses, but whether that's enforced is up to Trump's DOJ.

Executive orders have a significant place in the American presidency — but they aren't blank checks. Courts must remain ready to perform their constitutional duty and strike down any executive order that undermines the rule of law.

A president rewarding his biggest donors with political favors and countless opportunities to enrich themselves at the expense of the American people is corruption. Executive power should not be auctioned off to the highest bidder by any president.
