Just downloaded all the data from, then deleted, my Twitter* account. ( * I refuse to call it X. Bloody stupid name.)

Googling your real name is sometimes entertaining. Apparently I'm an "Internet entrepreneur, technology expert, TV personality, author." and I have "the soul of a journalist but the bank account of an entrepreneur"! Wouldn't that be nice 😆

Honestly listening to these beats kinda makes me want to quit my job and spend the rest of my life playing drums, just chasing that beautiful laid-back funk.

This site is epic - historically significant samples from the annals of hip-hop: cratekings.com/300-classic-... So many absolutely killer funky beats ❤️

Also TIL: George Lucas sued the CIA for using an X-Wing on a secret operation patch... and he won. NEW CONSPIRACY THEORY: the reason George Lucas got so much worse after the original Star Wars trilogy is because the CIA killed him in revenge and replaced him with a double

TIL that one of the original NeoPets you could own was 'Bruce Forsyth', which was literally *a goddamn JPG of Bruce Forsyth*. And that pet still exists! Only now it's called just Bruce and it's a penguin. What the actual F 🤯

Videogames make it look so easy to alternate sprinting, jumping, and jogging around in a half crouch. I am a drastically unfit 40 year old, I've just spent about an hour running/crouch-jogging around fire spinners to get dynamic video shots, and lemme tell you: I am *boned* when the aliens invade.

I know that saying "I am not the same person on the internet as I am in real life" seems redundant in a world where social media has been around for decades. But still. It feels important to keep saying it, I think?

The one exception to "I'll write about me" is that I probably won't write here about interpersonal trials and tribulations or mental health - the former because they're private, and the latter because it really doesn't change much. So be aware that this is a filtered version of me.

On the other hand, I don't have any appetite for being somebody I'm not. I think it's fun to think about silly little birds, high intensity lighting, transport logistics, and Python libraries, and I rather dislike one-line hot takes. So that's what I'll write here.

I often worry that I'm actually rather boring

But now I know I'll use high intensity lights to wake up, I can drop a bit more money on dimmable LED tape and a smart controller, and make a proper little sunlight lamp ...strike that, a proper BIG sunlight lamp 😄

Why cold white warehouse lights? Cold white because I wanted to emulate sunlight. Warehouse lights because it's probably the cheapest way of getting *really* high intensity LED lighting. LED panels for offices are good but they're larger for less light.

I need to replace the 200W of cold white warehouse lights rigged up above my bed. They worked well to fix my circadian rhythm for a year or two, but they're not dimmable, and when they turn on it's so unpleasant that I've just stopped using them. Adding 'build an LED panel' to the project pile.

Boot bondage. (Crow glued the soles of my moto boots back on! They've lasted four years so not too bad.)

Fitted a handlebar mounted USB charger to my bike - will need this for navigation on the upcoming trip. It comes with a lead of the sort that usually goes to the battery, but this one is slightly too short. Huh. Well I was thinking of sharing a lead between this and ... 🧵

Heading through to Glasgow in the car rather than the bike, on a dry day, just feels wrong 😭 Can't wait to get the bike fixed. I started the tyre repair on Thursday but got held up by the rim tape being shredded, so now I'm waiting on a parcel with new tape.

Anticipated downsides of leaving Facebook: I no longer know when anybody's birthday is Unanticipated downsides of leaving Facebook: I don't remember anybody's surnames any more! 😱

New profile pic! I feel like this captures my goofy-ass self more than the photo of me in a polo shirt and nice jumper

I always enjoy the juxtaposition whenever I happen to have painted nails when wrenching on my motorbike. This one is particularly fun: trying out gel nail polish, and I decided to go for the most Disco Sparkle Barbie colour possible 😄

😭❤️

Maps and distances are weird. I don't think I've ever quite appreciated that the distance between Edinburgh and Dover is about 5/6 the distance between Calais and the start of the Alps. The UK always looks so teeny on maps and Europe looks so huge. Maybe I'll get out there one day.

By the way I've now heard the weird 'boop.' noise in my car a few more times. It's always when I'm turning right, usually on a roundabout, and I suspect it might be a noise from my suspension spring. Might be the sound of an upcoming garage bill 😬

Found this Python project which logs into LiveJournal and uses the month-by-month exporter for you: github.com/arty-name/li... Thank goodness for people fixing things out of the need to scratch an itch <3

Trying to do an export for LiveJournal. It looks like they used to support exporting everything (I have an archive from 2006 of a bunch of posts and comments) but now they only support exporting one month of posts at a time, with no comments. That's real crappy. Wish I'd exported stuff earlier.

Went back and looked at my Twitter archives. I'd forgotten how much I used this back around 2010. Now requesting an archive download so I can close my account.

Today has been nice. Fitted a USB charger to my bike, watched jackdaws, pigeons and magpies squabbling over tree perching space, figured out that the mysterious entity making crackling and popping sounds was a starling, had a proper evening's chat with Nate, did a tiny bit of 'videographer fitness'.

Something in my car just made a low, very soft, polite 'boop.' *My car does not go 'boop.'* It goes BING or BEEP BEEP BEEP or BIIIIIIP. And my phone is on vibrate. It's the exact 'boop.' that my conference headset makes, but that's on my desk at work... Genuinely wondering if I hallucinated it.

We are back to our regularly scheduled musical taste: today's report writing is powered by Architects 🖤

Sleepy but watchful.

Random film terminology of the day: Pan/tilt: camera stays in the same place and turns side to side or upwards/downwards Dolly shot: camera moves forwards/backwards Truck shot: camera moves side to side Pedestal shot: camera moves upwards or downwards

I also need to try out pulling focus manually while taking video. The Nikon Z6 was struggling a lot with video 6 autofocus, and even though the Z6 II is apparently better, I kinda like the idea of having full focus control anyway. Can I do it while keeping the camera steady? We'll see.

Also I discovered I'm gonna need to get fitter! I want to use a lot of camera movement - slow side-to-side tracking shots, low level shots, transitions from low to mid to high and back. Trying it out, it was surprisingly tiring - more so than photography.

Videography practice, up Calton Hill with the gimbal on Sunday - it was fun. I'm probably not going to use a gimbal to film Beltane: too much faff, too little reward, can't use the camera controls or change lenses. But it's such a neat piece of kit :D

(This Eurodance thing was all sparked by getting stuck in a burger joint in Glasgow that was playing 90s dance hits.) Strong vibes of sitting beside the DDR machine, downstairs in a slot machine arcade in Glasgow in 2003, watching friends slay ridiculous combos in Afronova and MAX 300 ❤️

Today is, apparently, a Eurobeat day. Had to grab a Tidal trial, as my MP3 library (I'm old fashioned) contains almost none. Tidal signup asks what your fave artists are. I checked Fear Factory, The Olllam, and Snarky Puppy, then immediately asked it to play Eurobeat. Yes, my music taste is weird.

I played a bit of fiddle for the first time in ages last night, and it was great. Like the quote says ... my soul grew a little. (A few of the hair cells in my ears might have died though, because I am *well* out of practice and my intonation was, uh, imperfect? 😅)

I might have to commit to posting this yearly, or something.

That struggle of posting art online.
