Breaking news: 22 states are suing to block NIH’s cutting of indirect costs. See our updated story on the Friday night news and its aftermath. scim.ag/4hTJQ6v

If your institution sent out an email about how we are not giving up on DEI two weeks ago but haven't sent out or planned anything for Black History Month, you have gotten the real meaning of that email now. This is the moment when we should be the most vocal about Diversity

Are you a scientist interested in science communication but don’t know where to start? Ever wonder how a graduate student has time for outreach projects? Check out SCOPE! An org @vangeliqueallen.bsky.social and I created! First panel on creating children’s books and podcasts is today at 1pm ET 😊🧪

To all us NIH grant holders: we must prioritize diversity ideals, even if the current goverment doesn't. Double down on making STEM open to all. We hold the dollars so we still have power. Never forget that you are not the powerless.

Not sure why, but a few people started following me in the past few days so I guess it is a good day to reskeet my introduction post... Also, you will be on a possible unapologetically queer, immigrant ride, with occasionally science posts.

The FDA has scrubbed from its website guidance on conducting medical trials with representative numbers of men/women and racial/ethnic minorities. these aren't symbolic issues. Drugs affect men/men, people with different genetic backgrounds differently. talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/medic...

This week, amidst a broader purge of LGTBQ-mentioning materials from federal health sites, NIAID deleted its HIV Language Guide, an important reference on destigmatizing, people-first terminology. But it's still a public domain document, so we reposted it on TheBody: www.thebody.com/hiv/niaid-hi...

1. Sabotage public institutions. 2. Claim they don’t work efficiently. 3. Eliminate them. — That’s the playbook.

I'm asking cis people: when people use mixed pronouns - such as he/they or she/they - please make the effort to use both. There's a trope: a he/they or she/they is never called "they"; I notice, & appreciate, when people make the effort.

There’s no way to know how NIH is going to implement the gender EO, but no matter what happens, it’s important that we not participate in the attempted administrative erasure of trans people. We need to continue to report data as is standard in our fields, including gender identity where applicable.

As someone who grew up in Austria I am really concerned about the apparent lack of concern. y'all should distribute the small book 'Biedermann und die Brandstifter' by Max Frisch ("The Fire Raisers: A Morality Without a Moral,"), which lays it out in detail. 🧵

Being called "favorite gay scientist" from the high school intern is so sweet!

📢UCLA is recruiting an open rank, tenure-track/tenured faculty position in the basic sciences! (see link below) #AcademicTwitter 💫✨ recruit.apo.ucla.edu/JPF10062

It's an incredible honor to receive the IDEA Award, and it wouldn't have been possible without my friend and collaborator on the Queer in STEM project, Dr. Allison Mattheis, as well as the backing of @outtoinnovate.bsky.social president Dr. Rochelle Diamond, who pushed for my nomination

One month to officially submit the reimbursement (after I provided all documentation for the conference I attended) and one more month (at least) sitting with HR to review and approve the cost. Luckily, I did not charge on my personal credit card

Green cells!!!

"In naming ... lenacapavir as the 2024 #BOTY, Science acknowledges the next, but by no means final, step in the drive to fight HIV/AIDS, where the rigors of the laboratory and the needs of humanity are inseparable," writes @holdenthorp.bsky.social in this week's #ScienceEditorial. scim.ag/4g9kjG4

Science’s 2024 Breakthrough of the Year is lenacapavir, an injectable drug that demonstrated remarkable success at preventing HIV infection with one shot every 6 months. Learn more about this year's #BOTY and other big advances in science: scim.ag/3BrCtUn

Second co-corrisponding preprint is out! In collaboration with Alessandra Sacco group, we manage to double the yield of PAX7+ SMPCs generated in vitro and to mature them to a postnatal stage by modulation JAK2/STAT3 signaling. Thanks to CIRM and MDA for their support #myosky #myogenesis #DMD

I joined 75+ @nobelprize.bsky.social laureates urging US Senators to oppose RFK Jr.'s confirmation as DHHS Secretary. If you’re in a state with GOP senators, PLEASE reach out to them! I’d deeply appreciate it if you amplified this post! 🙏 www.nytimes.com/2024/12/09/h...

Trans lives matter. This is non-negotiable, motherfuckers

Surprised, but not that much, on the lack of options for gender identities in the faculty applications portals: M/F/Not wish to answer But all of you want to recruit the most diverse population and are inclusive of all the gender identities. 🙄 #lgbtqinstem #diversity #dei

While waiting for a couple of announcements 🤞🏼🤞🏼 and to not think about the lack of replies on my applications, here is an Italian Merengue

Do you know outstanding undergraduate researchers who could use up to $750 in travel funding to present their work at the Spring @amerchemsociety.bsky.social Natl Meeting or Pittcon? Please encourage them to apply for a Kolthoff award! Deadline is Jan. 13, 2025. acsanalytical.org/kolthoff-tra...

🎨 In case anyone need… The NIH BioArt Source is an awesome library of *free* professionally drawn illustrations for scientific presentations or figures. Downloadable in HD. Thank you NIH for this invaluable tool 🙏! Check it out 👇 bioart.niaid.nih.gov

The nomination of Pete Hegseth to be Secretary of Defense should give all Americans pause. Not only the allegation of sexual assault but also his retrograde views of women and his bizarre right wing conspiracy theories outlined in his books. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

The fantastic @shaunoboyle.bsky.social has put together a vast list linking many studies and reports focusing on the experiences of LGBTQIA+ people studying or working in STEM. You can read it here. prideinstem.org/2024/11/18/t...

Reminder for scientist: don't use red+green LUTs. Make your images and videos colorblind friendly. Run them through one of many tools available to make them accessible 🧪 #microscopy

Swastika on campus was not on my life bingo card...

In 1924 Giacomo Matteotti, one of the earliest and staunchest oppositors of fascism in Italy was killed by the fascism secret police. Political opposition abandoned the Parliament, in a move that became known as "Scissione dell'Aventino"
