i def don't blame people for wanting to avoid negativity for a fave, even if they agree with a take, but a lot of fandoms these days treat 'i have hard feelings about this character' as grounds for harassment, cruelty, and ostracization, and it really does mean a lot

from the bottom of my heart as somebody with a bunch of good friends and chill acquaintances who are hythlo fans, y'all are god's strongest soldiers and i appreciate it hugely 🙏

it's one of those things that feels so so huge, a massive interconnected web that weighs you down and burns where you touch it, feels like it could swallow you whole if you even so much as look. and it makes it feel so much smaller when you can look at each piece and say: huh. that fit in one skeet.

hermes lies at the intersection of so many things for me--ableism, emotional abuse, workplace abuse and harassment, religious trauma, epistemic injustice, the list goes on--and fuck, dude, it is. rough. and hard to talk about. and the stuff with hyth/lodaeus especially hits me right where i live.

it turns out bsky is a good format for me to get this stuff out without being overwhelmed by how *much* it is--both the text itself, and its fandom's bullshit in response to it--and it makes such a huge difference to have The Bad Thing laid out in comparatively neat, concise pieces in front of you.

tbh i actively encourage + appreciate thread necroing, even if i don't have the spoons to respond properly at the time; i put a lot of effort into my threads, and the subjects are usually important to me (and exhausting to articulate more than once), so it's nice when they don't vanish into the void

so my instinct is to come back to things weeks later after i remember, have energy, or it's had time to percolate, and a) things get lost easy and b) i never know if it's unwelcome to late-reply. all of which is to say Apologies if I Have Ever Forgor and necroing my threads always has my blessing

the funniest part is i had SEEN this cutscene before, REPEATEDLY. it is literally the intro for one of my favorite characters in the game. my combined terrible visual processing and resulting 'sure let's go with that' instinct is just that powerful

it has been my discord status ever since. i've barely even seen urianger in MSQ. he haunts my every step

and by 'have to be the one to explain' i mean 'it is often not a feasible or appropriate context for me to step in and say something about it, which means that it will be itching in the back of my head forever,' which would have been the case here and it's cathartic that it wasn't lmao

that, and it's honestly a relief every time i don't have to be the one to explain why someone is being an asshole, because they flew too close to the asshole sun and made it self-evidently clear to everyone off their own bat that they are an asshole

i'm aware that this is INCREDIBLY petty of me, and in an ideal world this would not have happened because there'd be one less person moving through the world without having grown past their fash phase, but sometimes life really does just throw an immensely satisfying brick joke at you

its a skill like any other, you will struggle at first to say much beyond vague compliments, but if you push yourself more little by little you start to understand your taste, what resonates with you, why it does that. it will lead you to more art you will love, and will be able to love it more

Everyone has to accommodate other people, that’s fine & normal, we all understand you shouldn’t buttonhole just anyone & monologue about your special interest for six hours but that’s very different than performing Barbara Walters to get friends. Friends you can’t be yourself with aren’t friends.

If people don’t like you for who you are without DEFORMING yourself to fit their expectations I cannot say it loud enough that those people should be fucked off into the sea, do not make yourself into a bonsai person, being alone is better than that, at least for me.

and not only that, he invokes *one of the biggest assholes they both know, who is a coworker of hermes' he is going to have to be around A Lot for the foreseeable future.* what we see in elpis is emet-selch being *nasty* to hermes, and going VERY hard on emphasizing that his behavior is *shameful.*
comment in response to post
in fact, hythlodaeus not only thinks of convincing hermes to take care of himself as an 'attack'--something to catch him off guard and manipulate him into, not asking him what he needs as the authority on his own life--he intentionally invokes shame + disapproval from others to stomp the message in.

and even hythlodaeus, who's being the most Caring and Motherly + Checking In on Him When He's Not Doing Well, *sees no problem with that.* even beyond dismissing meteion's death, he doesn't even blink at his coworkers' treatment of him, much less go 'gee maybe that kind of thing might affect him'
comment in response to post
even if factoring that they didn't think meteion was a person much less his daughter (🙃🙃🙃🙃), we see people take repeat opportunities to mock him, gloat over his mistakes and the loss of something he's put so much work into, dig the knife in when he accidentally kills the animals he cares abt so much

fuckin hermes, man. amaurot can get fucked.

and like. they *win.* his story ends with him a hollow shell of his former self who they broke so completely that he lies down and accepts it--fully internalizes that it's his fault and failure and what he deserves, that he should never question them again. he's abused until he dies. and that's it.

eating disorder cw which like. the fact that one of their main avenues of ~care and concern~ as a vehicle for shame, victim-blaming, trauma-bonding, and Not Leaving Bruises involves concern-trolling over his eating disorder really fuckin hit me where i live 🙃🥲
