This is a really important point about how the NEH and the Perseus Project has made the ancient world open to all. The cutting of funding this past week continues to break all of our hearts but also to put the walls and silos of traditional academia back up.

SCOOP: Elon Musk's DOGE is getting audited. The General Accountability Office's audit examines DOGE’s handling of data at a number of federal agencies, according to sources and records reviewed by WIRED. from me and @timmarchman.bsky.social:

I've listened to people say SINCE 2015 that *someone* else should stop Trump. WHEN WILL THEY GET IT

To all the members of Congress whining and hand-wringing about Trump’s tariffs: You delegated the power to him by legislation. Take it back. “The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises” is the first power of Congress in Article One, Section Eight.

Court hearing just started re: DOGE hostile takeover of US Institute of Peace (USIP) and attempt to transfer independent agency’s building deed to GSA. Judge Beryl Howell says to US attorney: “You’re wearing your jacket today. Nice to see you dressed for court! I notice things like that.”

TODAY: Power vs. People “If the supporters of Susan Crawford are able to turn out at such a high level that Susan Crawford is a deciding vote on the state Supreme Court… it will show nationwide that no amount of money that Musk can pour in can overcome the fury that he’s ignited.” - Ben Wikler

How does one make someone who doesn't care about anything feel pain? -- My #SundaySentence this week is from @klagodzki.bsky.social's Controlled Conversations, a novel set in the '80s in Soviet-oppressed Poland. Beautifully written. #Booksky

I spoke with the Washington Post about why the Trump administration is so focused on US history: because authoritarian regimes rewrite history to legitimize their projects and normalize their chaotic, violent governance. Gift link: wapo.st/4cdjRFQ

Chicago is SO down with America’s Tesla Takedown. Chicago: Hey, hey! Ho, ho! Elon Musk has got to go! Windy City, coast-to-coast, we are SO with you. Thank you.

My Swahili teacher (in Tanzania) this week: I read some articles... A journalist in the war plans meeting? Why are students being arrested? Canada saying they aren't your friends anymore? Trump wants Greenland? South African Amb sent home? I was so surprised. There are many issues in America.

“I recognized that this conversation possessed a high degree of verisimilitude...And I remained mystified that no one in the group seemed to have noticed my presence.”

NEW! Sworn declarations filed last night confirm the Trump admin sent INNOCENT people to rot in prison El Salvador, including a professional soccer player jailed and tortured by the Maduro regime, who entered this country LEGALLY to seek asylum, and who has NO CRIMINAL RECORD in either country.

UPDATE: Yale just confirmed that State terminated the contract in a statement to me: "Researchers at the Humanitarian Research Lab were notified recently that government funding for their work on the war in Ukraine has been discontinued." Yale notes the Lab's work defending "Ukrainian children."

Seven of my colleagues and friends at Columbia Law have written a compelling (and, in my view unanswerable) response to the unprecedented Title VI demand letter that the Trump administration recently sent to Columbia University: balkin.blogspot.com/2025/03/a-ti...

The Computer History Museum's really excellent public programs are now available as audio podcasts. They are on all the usual platforms. Here is one on what is to me the most interesting thing happening in contemporary computing. It's not AI. open.spotify.com/episode/0QxI...

This is the first time Trump has been on the dais since this guy.

Correct.

This address is an obscenity even by Trump's standards.

Not that he gives a shit, but could you imagine trying to explain the COBOL problem to this dolt? #SOTU

Donald Trump has disgraced the United States of America in countless ways since he first entered political life ten years ago. But he had never disgraced the nation as badly as he did today. He has brought shame on this country to an extent I had never thought possible. And he has only just begun.

The United States have lost all credibility worldwide. www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNiS...

Any media outlet hanging on to a shred of journalistic timber should televise these hearings.

“RUSSIA CAN STOP THE WAR ANYTIME BY LEAVING UKRAINIAN LAND.”

This proposed mineral deal with Ukraine is outright extortion. Trump isn’t offering protection for Ukraine and it will of course be rejected (as it should be). I imagine Trump will then blame Ukraine for not being willing to negotiate and walk away. He may also walk away from NATO at the same time

Here's an action to take today: If you're in TX or LA, call Ted Cruz or Bill Cassidy and ask them why they're letting Trump piss away America's competitive advantage w/o lifting a finger. Mention this article. Cruz (Chair of Commerce): (202) 224-5922 Cassidy (Chair of HELP): (202) 224-5824
