Continuing the sloooooooooow progress on my Mont St Michel embroidery based on an image and stitches from the Bayeux Tapestry

My first-ever post to mark the first-ever day of Harewood House's Austen and Turner exhibition! It was privilege to work alongside Harewood's curators and some superb people from @cecs-york.bsky.social. RUN DO NOT WALK to see the "Sanditon" manuscript in Yorkshire this summer. #c18th #Austen250

Would you like to help illustrate the New Polar Times through original art, illustrations, or comics? Stay tuned for our second round of call for proposals!

Deer of the day from this mornings walk.

Exactly 200 years ago today a sperm whale washed up on the Yorkshire Coast. It ended up at Burton Constable Hall Nr Hull, where it can still be seen. Herman Melville saw the dissection report and that’s how it ended up being mentioned in #MobyDick #MelvilleMonday.

The first #oak berry I’ve seen this year.

Deer of the day.

Finished my first go at Bayeux Stitch - laid and couched stitch with stem stitch - from the excellent Bayeux Stitch book from Tanya Bentham.

I like how the CIA deputy director's son getting killed fighting for Russia because he loved Lord of the Rings is like the 7th most outlandish story of the week

Surely I know someone for whom this would be a dream job:

If you're having a difficult day, have a read through of this article on the urgent question of whether the Bayeux Tapestry has 93 or 94 penises. And people say history is boring. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/a...

Just heard my first cuckoo of the year!

Please, please, please, I need your help! (it's for next year's rankings...) Does anyone have a copy of Best New Poets 2016, 2019, 2022, 2023 and/or 2024? If not, could you please retweet? Thank you so much! 🙏

How I arrived on Bluesky

Another fab view from Hull Maritime Museum. New access to one of the turrets - you can see into the Gents in Victoria Square!

Brilliant tour of the Hull Maritime Museum this afternoon. So many great new spaces, but the Court Room is stunning. The details now revealed in the ceiling alone were worth the long drive!

Hull Maritime Museum looking fabulous this morning. Can’t wait for my sneak preview of the inside this afternoon!

Popped into @thedeephull.bsky.social to avoid the drizzle three days before my annual pass expires to see the fish! (Though it is great to see so many people of all ages enjoying the marine life!)

Guess where I am! It’s great to be back.

Happy Easter! (I post this every year without fail.)

Recently realised that the Dennis Stanton character from #MurderSheWrote was in fact dum dum duuuuuuum Captain Beaky. And now I can’t get that sodding tune out of my head.

if you are a cis person it costs you nothing to just say today that you see & hear your trans sisters & brothers & others over in the UK today -- and around the world, too, knowing that rulings like today's ripple out in ugly ways.

On the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, we thought we'd answer a question that's often asked, "If they raised the Mary Rose, why not raise the Titanic?" Allow our scaled diagram to explain...

Thanks to partnerships with Drax and Swire Bulk, global marine research is now being boosted by MV Kaying’s role in Continuous Plankton Recorder Survey - with a route spanning over 4,600 nautical miles between Vancouver, Canada and Japan. #marine #science @clareostle.bsky.social

“We would be worse than we are without the good books we have read, more conformist, not as restless, more submissive, and the critical spirit, the engine of progress, would not even exist. Like writing, reading is a protest against the insufficiencies of life.” Mario Vargas Llosa 1936-2025

Okay people - we need to find Roger's honk. Someone out there must be able to help! 🤞
