I had some thoughts about Actual Play, and decided to put pen to paper about them.

Three years ago last week, I wrote my 1st piece of public scholarship on the end of Critical Role’s first campaign & why folks watch Actual Play. In my latest, the Campaign 3 ending brings a new question: how do we TALK about Actual Play now?

A depressing but apt summation of where we are, and why democracy is failing: the richest and most powerful institutions in human history recognize climate change is warming the planet and increasing extreme weather events, but they pretend otherwise to placate a fascist movement.

So one of the things that I think is lost on AI proponents is what I call the card catalog effect, a thing I shouldn’t call it because a lot of people probably have no experience with a card catalog.

Silicon Valley Whistleblowers Warn Elon Musk ‘Hijacking’ Republicans to Control Entire US Government – Byline Times

As a professional poker playing friend of mine once said, "Just because the stakes are higher doesn't mean the players are better."

"activist leaders have told him and colleagues that they fear protests against Trump might eventually be used as a predicate for declaring martial law. Other House Democrats echoed this privately" Something something in advance www.cnn.com/2025/02/16/p...

Too many have the idea "I'm a dictator now" comes with a formal proclamation, an Oval Office speech, signing some enabling act, issuing an official order. A suitably dramatic cinematic moment. Meanwhile, their openly avowed rebellion against the Constitution is actually being declared like this.

seems like it is a big deal that the unifying ideology of the doge team is neo nazism

before the election, i predicted that trump wouldn't get much because he's a tired old man. it is increasingly obviously that i wildly underestimated how fucking tired he is. he's just goddamn sundowning while elon upstages him.

#WeLoveHEB (not just for their policies, BTW... the have crave worthy, cult worthy foods, too.) www.eatthis.com/best-heb-gro...

Will the DOGE, which is willy-nilly ignoring laws, regulations, guidelines, codes and any other normal procedure, gain access to US nuclear weapons secrets? Two members of Congress wrote to the Department of Energy, responsible for the nuclear stockpile, appropriately worried about the possibility.

This is a useful (but day-ruining) post on the current situation (it’s a self-coup), including a list of likely outcomes (civil war is possible, but unlikely). Also, @liberalcurrents.com is clear-eyed and becoming part of my daily reading rotation. www.liberalcurrents.com/is-it-a-coup/

Rogers Smith and I have thoughts.

Call your Congress people today. Remind them you think democracy matters. Doesn’t matter which topic you pick. It’s important you call them weekly.

In case this won't be reported, Senate Dems are holding the floor for 30 hours to try to stall the RFK Vote! Here's the press release from Wyden's office.

Ok brainstorming done. Here is my official* short list of sociology breakthroughs: 5. Distinction (Bourdieu) 4. Interaction ritual (Goffman) 3. The Matthew Effect (Merton) 2. Double consciousness (Du Bois) (bonus 2.) Looking-glass self (Cooley) 1. Social capital (Coleman) *def not official

It's not complicated. They're just trying to stop women from being able to vote.

This is like a bank robber getting to fire the cops and disable the alarms just before he strolls into the bank lobby.

www.foreignaffairs.com/united-state... This is by far the best, clearest and most realistic analysis of what we're in for that I've seen.

Bro looks like an alien

not a new observation but Elon Musk genuinely isn't very bright, genuinely has no idea how most things work, and his entire supergenius engineer persona is a tech press-enabled mythology (they've never been held accountable for)

I kind of like how Gerry Connolly's brief tenure as Oversight RM has been a brutal humiliation ritual for all the 100-something idiots who voted for him over AOC

Rich coming from the guy that famously has done nothing of note in his entire career but live rent free in the homes of random celebrities. The United States shouldn’t be the fucking mafia. We should support a democracy defending itself from invasion because it’s the right thing to do.

Civ 7 has officially launched! I hope you’ll indulge me as i type out a thread: I was moved onto the game after working on Midnight Suns and immediately thought “i can’t write like this.” www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGOd...

Folks are shocked that their institutions, after professing commitments to climate justice and DEI, are now caving to Trump and scrubbing all references. It's brutal. And it's the smallest taste of what our students felt when their universities called in the cops b/c they protested a genocide.

“ … The fascism of today is nestled between the digital oligarchy (Musk) and the hydrocarbon oligarchy (Putin). Trump has pledged himself to America’s own hydrocarbon oligarchs, thereby insuring climate disaster, suffering, immigration, and even more occasions for division. … ” — Timothy Snyder

my view is that as soon as the administration froze disbursement of congressional appropriations we entered constitutional crisis territory

GITMO preceded Trumpism but shares one of its central themes: there should be people outside the law, people with no rights anybody is bound to respect. That accompanies belief that there should also be people with rights superior to all others, people not bound by any law.

“Trump promised economic relief: cheaper eggs and gas. Instead, voters got an unelected tech billionaire systematically dismantling federal agencies, surrounded by 4chan edgelord trolls LARPing as cabinet secretaries, all operating without congressional oversight or constitutional authority.”

They just don't understand the contemporary Republican Party. It's like being in denial when you find out your old pal has become a serial killer.

I appreciate that he just distilled all conspiracies into one single sentiment

I love all my friends saying things like, “I wish I could make a career off being petty and making diss tracks” after the halftime show, and I’m out here like, “Have you considered academia?”

One of the words on this list is “historically”.

The number of people surprised by the long list of words NSF is targeting makes me think many of you all have not seen this: www.commerce.senate.gov/services/fil...

we are reaching levels of national security threats I did not even realize were possible this is the kind of thing you put in a terrible b-movie where some nefarious cybercriminal has hacked The Entire Treasury and everyone rolls their eyes at the implausibility except somehow it's actually real
