Re: measles outbreak, here’s a still-relevant 2017 interactive from @science.org: See year by year how vaccines beat back nine dangerous infectious diseases www.science.org/content/arti...

The European Commission reacts to Trump’s threat to slap 25% tariffs on EU-made goods: “The EU will react firmly and immediately against unjustified barriers to free and fair trade, including when tariffs are used to challenge legal and non-discriminatory policies.“

Happy to see that Paul Krugman agrees with my Europtimism.

In therapy this morning I talked about the weight of knowing a tidal wave of suffering is coming. There may be ways to mitigate some of it, but it's coming.

Kennedy said some words in today's Cabinet meeting, suggesting 1) measles outbreaks are not uncommon and 2) most of the hospitalizations were for quarantine purposes. He also said 2 deaths--unsure if that was a misstatement or another will be released. But I want to talk about that first claim. /1

Open Justice VICTORY: The govt has today SCRAPPED the Online Plea and Allocation plan, devised during Boris Johnson years. It would have led to no end of criminal cases, including many really serious allegations that lead to prison, beginning in secret.

A nation that wants to end a war doesn't do that by perpetually shelling civilians. Russia is a war crime. Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦✊🏼🕊️

Every defence and security system we have is entangled with the US. Even GPS is wholly owned by the US Space Force. Our intelligence is automatically shared with the US, whose bases here are allowed to spy on our own citizens. So if the US is now an enemy power, the enemy is already here.

President of Finland Alexander Stubb speaking in Kyiv today: ▪️ It’s not Russia who decides on EU membership, its the European Union who does that ▪️ It’s not Russia that decides on NATO membership,it’s the alliance itself ▪️ It’s not Russia that decides on what Ukraine has by its border, when, where&how

The nordics are starting to take the lead in Europe

I haven't seen a fight between federal prosecutors and the AP since the Obama era, when their reporters were being spied on by having their phone records illegally collected.

Today the UN saw votes on two competing Ukraine resolutions, one drafted by Ukraine and supported by Europe - one by the US. The Ukraine one passed 93-18 (65 abstentions), the US wanted Ukraine to withdraw its resolution, but Ukraine did not do so. /1

A U.S. B-52H Stratofortress, a nuclear-capable bomber, conducted a flight over Estonia near Russia's border, accompanied by F/A-18s and F-35A fighter jets.

Regardless of the outcome of today's election in the USA, the fact that it's so close should be a reminder of our dependence on the US tech companies and legislation. Promote and use European alternatives and if you are from the US go vote! european-alternatives.eu #USElection2024

Very interesting Trade Secrets @alanbeattie.bsky.social on the geopolitics and economics of controlling satellite space. As the US increasingly privatises its physical and data infrastructures then we will begin to see what it means to really have a space race...(again). www.ft.com/content/0588...

"Pro life" folks at work

In every single interview I’ve done with international media since Trump took power I’ve been asked: Why are there no mass protests? There are many reasons, of course, but the utter refusal of the self-proclaimed “fourth estate” to communicate clearly what is happening has to be high on the list.

I think it’s not helpful to repeat claims that the administration is working on eliminating “DEIA” as though it’s some kind of corporate strategy; just say explicitly that they’re trying to eliminate diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, and explain how.

I want to tell you a story. In 2015, I was in the small Lithuanian city of Panevežys, standing with the locals, watching a military parade. But this was no ordinary parade, because marching alongside the Lithuanian troops were our American allies.🧵1/17

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office. Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc. Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

This is entirely preventable. Science solved this problem more than 60 years ago.

This is 💯 % how @defenddemocracy.bsky.social feels too. We’ve been warning since at least 2017 (and I since 2014) for Russian aggression & the weaponisation of Big Tech platforms’ addictive design. EU still hasn’t moved beyond chasing symptoms rather than addressing causes 🤦🏾‍♀️ Build Eurostack NOW!

BBC News on hour reporting straight that Trump has got rid of military chiefs because ‘they’re too mired in woke culture’ 🤯🤯🤯 Traditional liberal democratic media still hasn’t learned how to report on authoritarians, even now when it’s almost too late

@carneross.bsky.social describes something that would be funny if it weren’t so sad about the #Russia-#US talks: I watched Lavrov eyeing him [Rubio] over the grandiose table in Riyadh as an easy snack. It didn’t help that the fool in Washington had already sold the farm to Russia

Starlink should be banned from European markets on national security grounds. Anything requiring Starlink should be shut out of the European market, and sanctions should be considered against all relevant actors. kyivindependent.com/us-threatens...

“There is no act too small. Every action matters.” AOC, awesome & on it as always.

Great letter in the Guardian on fascism’s paralysing arrival -

You know how the mafia got started? Sicilian farmers were exporting valuable citrus fruits, relying on irrigation systems. The mafia got hold of control of irrigation and threatened to cut off the water if substantial protection money not paid, siphoning off the farmers’ profits. Similar thing here.

This is a poor headline from the BBC. The US aren't offering a "deal" - they want the minerals in return for support already given. It's straight up extortion.

Journalism is officially dead if they can't label rain wet. This crew are a bunch of crooked, bigoted conspiracy theorists & extremists who are conducting a coup. Trump literally fucking told us he's king and Elon Musk did a literal Sieg Heil. Even a stenographer would call them Nazis & traitors

Monday, February 24, marks the third anniversary of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine. I have decided to be in Kyiv for that occasion, with @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu to reaffirm our support to the heroic Ukrainian people and to the democratically elected president Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

With Macron calling an intergovernmental summit in Paris tomorrow, many wonder what is best institutional venue to discuss Europe's response to biggest security crisis since 1945. Here are 8 reasons why intergovernmental route is crucial now instead of relying on 🇪🇺 & Brussels institutions. 🧵👇 1/10

We will ensure that the story of Holocaust survivor Marian Turski lives on. The world lost a man who lived through the horror and evil of concentration camps. Just last month in Auschwitz, we bore witness to his testimony. His story is of courage and strength. May his memory be a blessing.

1. AUDIO On Monday in Fairbanks, Congressman Nick Begich (R-AK) told a constituent laid off from a job with the federal gov't that there was nothing he could do to stop budget cuts imposed by DOGE and Elon Musk Begich said he was "not in a position to approve or deny the cuts"

I'm an Article I member of Congress, do you think I have the power to just direct federal spending or something?

The "Long Live The King" proclamation isn't a distraction. It's there so his followers will defend and get used to the sentiment before it becomes reality. I continue to be confused by the people who can't see all of this for what it is: the end of the system of government we've had for 236 years

I’ve met with President Zelenskyy and members of his government. They are strong, honorable allies. Minnesota stands with the people of Ukraine as they fight to defend freedom and democracy. www.politico.com/news/2025/02...

🚨 NEW: Wow, Trump's former VP Mike Pence just called Trump out for lying about Ukraine.

Democrats should table a motion condemning Trump's attack on Zelensky and force Republicans to vote against it - use it against them in mid-terms (assuming the US actually holds mid-terms, because if Republicans don't find backbone, maybe they won't)
