Anyone who admires #JaneAusten’s writing, please watch this really excellent, documentary. Well chosen talking heads inc Colm Tóibín, Greg Wise+Kate Atkinson, sensitively dramatised scenes from her life+illuminating clips from films of her novels. Revelatory, pitch perfect. The #BBC at its best.

Did the "millionaire exodus" really happen? No. Not even close. But that didn’t stop news around the world from reporting it did. So we're not going to let it stop us either from visualising just how much it didn't happen. #BogusExodus #TaxTheSuperRich taxjustice.net/2025/06/10/t...

The £3 fare cap that was earmarked to be lifted at end of this year looks like it is being extended until at least March 2027. This is the right decision and excellent news, particularly for those in rural areas which would have likely seen steep increases in fares without UK government support.

1/7 The scam of the century: Putin didn’t just start a war—he sold the whole world a lie. He lied about invading, lied about genocide, lied about NATO, and lied about Ukraine itself. This war is built on fiction, and it’s time to tear the mask off—so people don’t forget

Powerful message to Government from the Women and Equalities Committee in their new report on parental leave published today – paternity leave in the UK is outdated and unequal. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Israel’s idea that they are going to show Greta & the Freedom Flotilla crew violent Oct 7th videos in order to convince them that they are in the wrong… …just utterly exposes how profoundly tribalistic, barbaric and emotionally underdeveloped the Israeli government is.

Let's revolt. If we want to meet climate targets, the new world will be built from #renewable things, the old will be improved with them. It is not the new miracle concrete only made in one place, sold at a high price. It's #climate tech that liberates everywhere.

Why don't the Liberal Democrats (72 MPs in the UK Parliament) and/or the Greens (4 MPs) get this level of coverage by our established press? It's a good question. The media fuels the currents of the water we swim in.

BALLERINA is cut-and-paste Wick-style action + hitwoman clichés, though has a couple of things I'd not seen before - not saying what in case you're going to see it. But am pleased to report it has the trifecta: 1) Disco carnage! 2) Crêpage de chignon! 3) KITCHEN FIGHT! Stunt Oscars all round!

⚠️ Confirmed: Metrics show a significant decline in internet connectivity in Manipur, #India; the incident comes amidst deadly tribal unrest as authorities impose a curfew and a regional internet shutdown 📉

🚨Update: five out of five rejected, turnout too low

£1bn so far and that’s just financial redress. Imagine all the other costs #PostOfficeScandal www.computerweekly.com/news/3666255...

Fascinating. Born in Merseyside in 1978, Lucy cites the impact of watching the Hillsborough football disaster on TV as a child as one of the driving reasons of her decision to pursue a career in disaster management. She talks to @laurenlaverne.bsky.social

Hexagons aren't always MQ-9s, but in this case, yes, there are two MQ-9 Reapers over LA today. Just ridiculous.

Today’s #MastheadMonday is the short-lived Aurora Borealis (1821). London based, it devoted lots of space to Scottish news, which proved unpopular with its readers. It merged with the Observer of the Times in 1822. Digitised by the BL & free-to-view: www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/titles/auror...

🧐 Hmmm just a former Conservative Westminster candidate and district councillor on bill at a the Moscow forum hosted by the Tsargrad Institute, run by U.S., EU and UK-sanctioned oligarch Konstantin Malofeyev Some guest list too - Alex Jones, Galloway, Errol Musk Any thoughts Kemi Badenoch?

Libya’s sites of torture and abuse must be sealed now 🛑 These are not just buildings, they are crime scenes 💔 Only a full independent investigation can bring truth and justice ✊

Israeli forces have boarded Madleen - the volunteer-crewed ship trying to break siege to deliver aid to starving people in Gaza - and abducted the crew. If you are a citizen of any country whose citizens are on board (France/Germany/Brazil/Sweden), please watch this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjMd...

As Trump deploys the National Guard against his own citizens, the importance of protecting our own human rights from abuse at the hands of govt has never been clearer. But *still* the Tories push to strip us of our protections, in a desperate bid for power for themselves. Important letter (Times)

This is an interesting (and, uh, dubiously good but what else were they gonna do) new chapter in the Pakistan unruly energy transition story. Original source is PR No. 305 here, on 25 May 2025: www.finance.gov.pk/press_releas...

British photographer Nick Stern has undergone surgery on his left after being shot with a plastic bullet whilst photographing protests in Los Angeles. Stern had press ID and a large camera plus video camera. www.thetimes.com/us/news-toda...

Should Thames Water be put into Special Administration? And will it be too costly to the tax payer. “Public ownership of England’s water companies could cost close to zero, says thinktank Common Wealth report argues debt, pollution & underinvestment justify process known as special administration”

Pakistan borrowed heavily & over-invested in coal & gas generation capacity, and is now facing a "utility death spiral" as distributed solar & batteries are going gangbusters. Now, it's trying to sell spare thermal capacity to AI & crypto data centres. www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/news/paki...

How is this not a bigger story? I have no doubt that Trump has asked someone if he could drop a few bombs on Los Angeles.

Fossil fuel harm and Israel's genocide are linked in literal ways, but one of the more indirect links is how media outlets actively and consciously set out to defend, minimise and reframe the violence of the aggressors Eg:

**taps paragraph from Hunter S. Thompson's Nixon obituary**

Lots of talk today about the demise of BlueSky. For whatever it's worth, it's been a boon to indie publishers like us. Twitter and Facebook have pretty much silenced us, so the engagement here has, and continues to be, wonderful.

The boat was in international waters. So I think this is a kidnapping.

if Thunberg is brave enough to repeatedly put herself directly in harm’s way, then journalists can be brave enough to say that a civilian vessel was illegally seized in international waters, and its crew abducted

Analysis by @ipprnorth.bsky.social reveals the £140bn transport investment gap between the North and London over the last 14yrs. Long term investment in the North’s rail network, integrated with local transport & house building plans, is key to improving connectivity and boosting prosperity.

Why are the UK’s industrial electricity prices so high? UK prices for energy-intensive industries reached $187 per MWh in 2024, compared with $62 per MWh in India, $70 per MWh in China and just $45 per MWh in the US. on.ft.com/43SWxJB

Deserts are spreading across Britain, yet scarcely anyone in public life even seems to have noticed. This week's column seeks to open our eyes to something that has been too big to see. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

35 years of England water privatisation. Industry controlled by companies with 1,135 criminal convictions. 1trn litres water a year lost in leaks. Sewage dumped in rivers for 3.62m hrs a year. £85bn dividends, £70bn+ debt, people fleeced Last decade, £112m exec bonuses . Must end privatisation.

It's surreal that this needs to be a petition but please consider signing and sharing: Caught lobbying for cash or bullying in Parliament? You can still return to the House of Lords - for life. No real consequences. No accountability. Sign now to kick rule-breakers out for good.

kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

If you live in NYC and are not registered to vote, you have until June 14 to register as a Democrat, allowing you to vote for Zohran Mamdani in the June 24 Democratic primary and keep Andrew Cuomo out of power. It's easy to do online: e-register.vote.nyc/registration

"When people get better care they're happier and you improve the NHS. That’s why, in next week’s spending review, social care and carers must be the top priority." @EdDavey.LibDems.org.uk

Remember this iconic photo from Ferguson? This is Edward Crawford, throwing back a tear gas canister to protect some nearby kids. Like many identified Ferguson protesters and organizers, he was "found dead" a couple years later and neither the cops nor the media will ever investigate.

The coverage of what's actually happening in the streets in LA is atrocious. No journalists called the "play by play" Why? Americans & the media are so biased towards "law & order" that most couldn't be bothered to report on the street. So I've got no idea what happened after I went to bed. None

Today and tomorrow Italy votes 🗳️ Five ballots, one referendum to repeal some (socially conservative) laws on labour and citizenship, and it will all boil down to turnout — something the current Italian government has explicitly campaign against. 🧵 on recent 🇮🇹 referendum turnouts and predictions:

Oooh, you mean it's OK to leave, realise it's a mistake, then rejoin? 😉

There are no words … 😖 Wait. “Utter abomination” comes to mind 😡
