The gardeners of St John's College, Cambridge demonstrating (on Sunday) the virtues of 'Don't prune too soon'. #seedheads #gardening #Cambridge #WinterBorders #TheGardenInWinter

Great to hear on @BBCr4today mention of Sarah Backhouse of Sutton Court, #Herefordshire who bred the first 'pink'-trumpeted #Daffodil, named after her - 'Mrs RO Backhouse'. She influenced these 4 breeders about whom I wrote for 'Hortus'. @The_RHS www.cbeale.co.uk/Articles/hor...

Nothing wrong with a #magnolia interior. #gardening

PERSON OF THE DAY. 16 January 1902. Scottish sprinter Eric Liddell was born in Tianjin, China. As a committed Christian, he refused to run in heats of the 100 metres at the 1924 Paris Olympics because they were held on a Sunday, but won the 400 metres. His story featured in Chariots of Fire.

Fire in the canal today.🔥

Seen today. Ever-decreasing circles.😬🐣

One of my neighbour's door 'wreath'... I can't stop laughing 😂 #bahhumbug #christmaswreaths

FACT OF THE DAY. 18 December 2000. Kirsty MacColl (aged 41), was killed after being hit by a powerboat while diving in Mexico. The pilot of the boat was convicted of “culpable homicide”. MacColl is best known for her contribution to the Christmas classic, Fairytale of New York with The Pogues.

The courage of those #ATAGirls.✌ Flying all sorts, GB-wide by eye, open cockpits in all weathers, avoiding balloon barrages. My husband's great-aunt, Susan Slade, was one of the lost. But not forgotten, thanks to a young cadet. #Attagirls #WW2 #aviatrix #memorial www.google.com/amp/s/www.bb...

Reflecting on a visit to the Grade I #ArtsandCrafts gem of All Saints, #Cambridge last w/end, inspired by touring the home of one of its decorators, David Parr of Leach & Co. davidparrhouse.org #Bodley #WilliamMorris

This is an excellent summary of the issues, and explanation of the strength of feeling, if you need one.

Delighted finally, to press 'send' on my latest research🧐 for Heckfield Place, Hampshire - one of my very favourite places.🌲🌳🍁🍂💚 I don't believe they're here yet, but on Fb they're at www.facebook.com/heckfieldplace (Photo not credited - taken from one of their recent posts.)

Trumpet 🎺 The lovely Pitcombe is over here now. Give him a follow - top 🌱ing. With tapas and Stonehenge thrown in.

To explain the avatar - Isabella Stewart Gardner by JS Sargent. I visited Boston for the first time this summer, and her museum. Still recovering (and this is just the building itself).😍

As the grotesque carnival of cynicism unfolds, I intend for this to be a place for shared thoughtfulness, knowledge, beauty and humour. And sanity. All the good things. Thanks for sharing.

A bluesky kind of day. Seems like a good time to move over. Looking at history, tapestries, arts & crafts architecture, gardens 🌱 books 📚 food, music, art, France & Spain, farming, countryside.
