Exactly! This is normal for everyone else - why are the optics only bad when a certain (insert pointed interpretation here) group of people do it

If you don't know what an agua de jamaica is without googling it, I don't wanna hear your thoughts on this sorry

I am writing this from my home in the East Bay, where my neighbor tells me to 'have a beautiful day mija' every morning. If you don't know what life in California feels like, your opinions on what we do and how we do it in defense of our own are meaningless to me

Ultimately, if you feel compelled to express your worries regarding what Fox News will say about a protester with a flag, ask yourself: would that protester care even a little bit about my opinion?

Just because Americans *outside* of California feel uncomfortable with their interpretation of the optics does not mean that people defending their own communities should alter their approaches to make outsiders feel more comfortable.

Multiculturalism, particularly in urban areas like LA and the East Bay, is not an aberration - it is the rule. Mexican flags are not typically viewed as expressing solidarity with a foreign country, they are expressing the presence of/pride in a cultural community. Californians know this.

Astonished by my own restraint tbh

Being more annoyed at *who* is protesting and *how* they are protesting, rather than *what* they are protesting is playing right into the hands of people who want the world to be crueler. They have been betting on that for 60 years and won nearly every time.

For the most part, although lots of Americans have QAnon brainworms and are convinced that a toddler can be a criminal, people don’t actually enjoy watching families be ripped apart. But the Right has successfully made its constituents hate their defenders more. This is intentional.

From a section on the Nixon-Agnew Right’s political polarization project - it goes on to say “Agnew recognized this perfectly. Black people, women, young people all were demanding rights, and in those struggles Agnew’s side only saw the deterioration of American values.”

Kennard was already very sick at the time, and died a horrific death as a result of what Devery Anderson calls “a slow, calculated lynching.” Even if you don’t listen to the episode, we should all know Kennard’s story.

Kennard essentially tried to desegregate Southern Miss *by himself* at a point when even the NAACP wouldn’t touch the school because it was simply too dangerous. McCain conspired to have Kennard arrested and sent to work on the notorious Parchman Prison cotton plantation.

Kennard attempted to enroll in Mississippi Southern College (now Southern Mississippi University) in 1956, 1957, and 1959. He was a Korean War veteran and devout Baptist.
