One more week to apply for the Stem Cell Summer school! Deadline 30th May.

Today, we are highlighting Ottoline Leyser, former @dev-journal.bsky.social Editor and current member of the journal’s Advisory Board, as an extraordinary biologist. #100biologists‬‬‬‬

Congratulations to Professor Donal O’Carroll, IRR Group Leader, who has been elected a Fellow of @royalsociety.org Donal has been recognised for his lab work including work on safeguarding germline immortality. Read our story: edin.ac/3H5gbKB...

We've developed a method to align genetic variant effect scores with ACMG/AMP classification criteria. It has two key advantages: (1) no assumptions about score distributions, and (2) consistent outputs without user tuning.

Many cells during development are exposed to caspase activation and yet survive. Why some die and not others ? We found out that the memory of previous caspase activation bias significantly later death comitment and bias death distribution and single cell decision www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

The background I used in my video meetings 😂

Check out our "In Preprints" @dev-journal.bsky.social w/ Yonit Maroudas-Sacks & Marc Trani Bustos @mpi-cbg.de @poldresden.bsky.social, putting recent #gastruloid work from @viktri08.bsky.social @thomasgregor.bsky.social @amartinezarias.bsky.social labs in broader perspective: doi.org/10.1242/dev....

Reminded of Ed Yong’s response to this question: “If I cover a preprint, I talk to 2-3 experts to get their views before writing the story. That’s exactly what I do if I cover a journal article…”

Astonishing evidence at the Covid Inquiry. The Government repeatedly ignored offers from the Crick Institute to provide mass testing on a national scale. Instead, the Government paid Deloitte consultants to project manage, not yet established, privately run labs. 1/2

This week, we are highlighting Reinier Prosée, Community Manager of @prelights.bsky.social, as our extraordinary biologist. #100biologists @reinierprosee.bsky.social

EDINBURGH AXOLOTLS! Super-excited to hear my wonderful colleague @aidarodrigo.bsky.social on BBC Radio 4 talking about the axototl colony she has established in our institute @edinuni-irr.bsky.social 😃 Available on BBC sounds: Aida's section starts at 23.37 www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Meet the 2025 @dev-journal.bsky.social Pathway to Independence (PI) fellows Eight developmental and stem cell biologists transitioning from postdoc to principal investigator journals.biologists.com/dev/pages/pi...

This is great news for @dev-journal.bsky.social and for the #DevBio community. Anyone who has had the pleasure of benefitting from Alex's editorial advice during his previous roles will know that he is an exceptionally insightful, helpful and committed editor. Congratulations @amjeve.bsky.social!

Generative biology: new approaches to study developmental design principles A @royalsociety.org Theo Murphy meeting organised by @jcornwallscoones.bsky.social, @dbenzinger.bsky.social and @cellysally.bsky.social 📅20-21 Oct 2025 📍Brighton, UK Find out more: thenode.biologists.com/generative-b...

Reminder: deadline to apply for the Stem Cell Summer School is 30th May. And it's May already! So you have to apply this month! A limited number of bursaries are available. p.s. this year, the summer school coincides with the Spetses Armata Festival, so there will be a big party on the island 🙂

Very excited for this meeting. We'll revisit fundamental concepts in #DevBio and ask how they might be informed by emerging #SynBio tools. We'll also discuss ideas around purpose and agency in synthetic morphogenesis, and generally have a VERY NICE TIME. Spaces available for short talks!

This is excellent

#DevBio job opportunity! Development (@dev-journal.bsky.social) is looking for a new Community Manager to run our community site, the Node (@the-node.bsky.social) – a great opportunity if you love devbio, #stemcells, #scicom and community engagement. Happy to chat informally about the role. ⬇️

Thanks.

Latest paper from the lab @cellbiol-mrclmb.bsky.social, Anna's PhD work hot off the press @plosbiology.org ! Using single cell genomics to understand tube morphogenesis, and why it's as important to switch things off as it is to switch them on!

Join us May 1st! Linus Schumacher and Guillaume Blin will talk about their collaboration on pattern formation in vitro models of human development @the-node.bsky.social @biologists.bsky.social @dev-journal.bsky.social @stemcellnetwork.ca @smbmathbiology.bsky.social utoronto.zoom.us/meeting/regi...

🚨🚨 New pre-print from the lab. led by the amazing @alejotorrescano.bsky.social ! Alejo & Co. elegantly decode the spatial logic of progenitor cell organization in the developing pancreas — from individual cells to structured cellular communities 🔬🔬🧫🧪 Check-it out ⤵️

Professor Gina Neff of Queen Mary University London told the BBC ChatGPT is "burning through energy", and the data centres used to power it consume more electricity in a year than 117 countries. This is just ChatGPT, not even all Gen AI. Using more electricity than >60% of the world.

This is really great. Congratulations to @guijacquemet.bsky.social and all authors. #PaperThemeTune can be anything from the atypical album Milijard by Circle, who are Finnish and also really great.

Extremely thankful to @acmedsci.bsky.social for the opportunity, and very excited to get started on this project at @edinburgh-uni.bsky.social ! #Springboard25

We're disappointed to see Ben Barres's powerful book "The Autobiography of a Transgender Scientist" among the ~400 titles removed from the Naval Academy Library. Needless to say, we're proud to have published his book and will keep it — and his memory — alive.

Interested in biological research beyond the standard? Join us in Edinburgh for the EMBO Workshop exploring how unconventional vertebrate models are becoming engines for biomedical research! 🦇 🐿️ 🦌 🐒 🦍 🐹🧍‍♀️ 🚨 Abstract submission deadline: 11 April 2025 🚨 meetings.embo.org/event/25-ver...

A small good thing in these difficult times. The always-impressive Aisling Fairweather treated us to some particularly delicious data in lab meeting today #BakeYourData #NeighbourLabelling

Spread the word!

Hello! My lab is interested in understanding how healthy mammalian cells sense and react to mutant neighbours. We do this by developing and using engineering biology tools to identify and manipulate neighbours of mutant cells. We also love taking colourful microscopy pictures!

If you haven’t seen Life Story, the 1987 BBC version of the discovery of the double helix, it’s available on iPlayer. It’s a terrific account, in particular the portrayals of Franklin and Wilkins (Jeff Goldblum as Watson not so good). Wilkins was the main advisor. H/t @syntenicman.bsky.social 1/n
