😂 now I’d struggle the other way around. Almost all English now, not much Dutch.

I remember Myst! My brother had it on his old Amiga when I was around 8 or so. I did not understand it at all! But I spoke mainly Dutch then and didn’t read English at all, so maybe that was why!

I may or may not have an addiction to buying vintage typewriters... okay... I definitely have an addiction to buying vintage typewriters. We're at three and counting.

The way you build to that 'Lazarus' at the end is really gripping with suspense. I now want to know more!!

I'm so sorry for your loss, James. Take care of yourself.

Love how you've pooled together various tools into a method that works for you. Good idea to structure around those beats. I tend to vomit out a plot outline in a couple of days (just feels like that's how the story 'wants' to go), then have to painstakingly make sure that I've hit the right notes.

Thank you. Me too. Pleasant surprise after how hard it was to write! And it made me love Isaac more (if that's possible). Win win.

Me too! It's amazing how a little time apart can make all the difference.

And feel exactly the same way. I think it may be *the* best show I’ve ever seen. The things it makes me feel. I too am a massive Star Wars fan, but this show is next level. The mirror it holds up to the zeitgeist threatening our world is equal parts horrifying and fascinating. I’m gripped.

Love this dynamic too. I'm looking forward to exploring it in Book 2 of my series (after Book 1's dynamic is so acrimonious between Isaac and his found family).

Well that’s an interesting one. What’s the price point that would get you to remove your red lines? For me, it’d have to be in the millions for me to step back, hold up my hands, and say “do what you want.” I’d allow changes for a lot less, but full hand it over? It’d have to be a lot.

Yes, being a fan is a must for a good adaptation.

Yikes! I would curl up and cringe myself to death. At least with kids, if I made a mistake and they caught me, I could laugh it off with them (and when I taught tinies in Y3, they actually believed the "Hey! You caught my purposeful mistake! Well done you. Have a houseplant.")

Yes, I agree. Some adaptations can do things differently, but still 'feel' the same if the changes are faithful to the original. It's when they think they can tell the story better (and invariably can't) that I have problems. (*ahem* Witcher *ahem*)

I soon realised that because I had no choice but to face my grief (planning her funeral, the admin, and being in my house, where she was so sick for the last 5 months), I wrote a character who got to run away from his. This sort of became the central theme, and his learning to grieve gave me closure

😂 Hey, I might need some pro proof readers for the whole game when it's finished. I'm on day 10 and I got such angst the other day when I realised 'But what if I'm wrong about all of it?' I don't get the same angst with 11-year-olds judging my teaching

Good luck. It's a gruelling process, but it's worth persevering (and sending out way more than 10 queries!)

Ugh. I just feel so crap for querying writers. My time in the trenches was awful. You don't need professionals making you feel bad for "disrespecting" agents on top of all the stress.
comment in response to
post
Oh, that was my wording based on them saying if no one bites after 12, go back and edit with advice from agents (which you won't get), or get our services, and that further querying is disrespectful. The implication being there's something wrong with the book, rather than it being an industry norm.
comment in response to

It really bothered me. I feel it's harmful advice in today's climate, where dozens and dozens of rejections are the norm. I didn't get my first full request until over 30 rejections, and I didn't get rep until over 50 with this book. My agent loves my book. If I'd stopped at 10, I'd have got nowhere
comment in response to

Right? I get he's trying to sell their editorial services, but it seems like such a weird take. The landscape has changed. There's sooo much competition. VERY few authors will get rep within 10 queries.

Yeah, I've thought about that before. I got a bit overwhelmed by all the stuff that's on there! I may have another look though, as I used to adore making teaching resources (as I'm sure you can tell from the above example, I used to go way overboard)
