Also, ICE got the customs folks when it was started, and customs folks don't know anything about immigration.

I know someone who was in INS when it was split into ICE and USCIS. He said it was a terrible idea to split the functions because it's not clear whether someone should be deported - INS could more easily find ways to help people.

I was at LAX with my sister and very young and cute niece, and Alfred Molina kept smiling at my niece.

Here in Sacramento we made a special carve-out for basketball teams.

Maybe they just wanted a whiter selection or artists to choose from?

Cowboy Carter was more traditional country than a lot of the EDM-country hybrids they got nowadays

Older stories of him in college portray him as a very smart but unethical and mean-spirited person. With some (most?) people, being terrible and awful look a lot like being dumb.

To be fair, we do that with the budget with CRs and many other things. Terrible way to run a country.

I believe that Hitler's extreme anti-Semitism began more when he was in his 30s as he visited Stammtische in Munich. Before then he was like a normal European - kinda anti-Semitic but not especially so. That is what I believe Richard J Evans wrote.

I'm in Sacramento, and the worst we're getting is mediocre acts at the state fair next month.

This makes my hometown of Fresno look like WeHo.

It's hard to have a liberal democracy when there's that going on.

It was fun! Looking forward to next time!

They just want a wider selection of folks. Sorry, I mean, they want a whiter selection of folks. They just want white people to come. It's a somewhat dumber version of Australia's White Australia policy.

I remember your post about how it doesn't require much intelligence to be a bully and thug.

The Strange New Worlds cliffhanger for season 2 makes 3 months look so short.

#TrekBookClub #LosttoEternity I think she was a little star-struck with meeting her. Gillian's thriving in the 23rd century.

#TrekBookClub #LosttoEternity I think citizen journalist would be a good role for her. Given that they have a universal basic income, she has time and means to become adjusted. I wonder if they have a support group for time travelers?

#TrekBookClub #LosttoEternity You covered it! Thanks for hosting this fun book.

#TrekBookClub #LosttoEternity The Neutral Zone is great. I remember watching it as a kid and thinking, Wow! 1997! Maybe they will have the ability to put people in cold storage.

I love me a good protest-inspired electric slide.

#TrekBookClub #LosttoEternity She has every right to feel angry. She got him to stand down by appealing to his former stated ideal of preserving life as well as to how she saved his life.

Good point. Honor is so important to them.

Totally agree!

#TrekBookClub #LosttoEternity She responded like a champ. The mind meld really helped. I wouldn't have been that calm or together mentally. I do think her journalistic training and natural tenacity really helped.

The main good thing with getting older is knowing how to deal with issues that arise and knowing which problems just aren't yours to solve.

#TrekBookClub #LosttoEternity Very interesting sequence. I had forgotten Cyloo's request to destroy the Osori gear. I think Saavik's training as a Vulcan made this a very interesting problem.

#TrekBookClub #LosttoEternity Khod made a rational decision based on the risk - would it make sense to die for this mission?

#TrekBookClub #LosttoEternity Fountain of Youth stuff hits different after age 40, I tell you what. Getting older is not fun in many ways, but it also is not the worst. Accepting the end of life is hard because it means suffering, too.

#TrekBookClub #LosttoEternity She behaved exactly as a Klingon leader would be expected to behave. I actually liked her character.

#TrekBookClub #LosttoEternity People have agency, and it was interesting to see who used their agency to make good and bad choices.

#TrekBookClub #LosttoEternity her ethical training from all that schooling came out in the end, perhaps.

#TrekBookClub #LosttoEternity Dennis was a great contrast to Melinda and was a mostly reasonable voice to Melinda's actions, which were admittedly somewhat reckless.

#TrekBookClub #LosttoEternity in a weird way, I think I agree partially with the Klingons! Shocking but true. I like how Yorba emphasizes meaning (even if it's in death and not life).

#TrekBookClub #LosttoEternity the connection to 2024 was more interesting to me, but the link to 2268 was also important. It was very clever.

Didn't you decide on Toward the Night? I believe that was going to be discussed in August.

1. The hospital scene and the metal factory with transparent aluminum were funny. Also, as a Finnish speaker, hearing the whaler say "Mitä helvettiä tuo oli" what the hell was that!? 2. I really liked all the interviews, but the joggers were great. Just all the details.

Meant losing someone more important to their mission.

#TrekBookClub #LosttoEternity I don't think he deserves the fate, but I wouldn't cry at his funeral. As for blame, I think a lot of people have agency. Fortier, for space jacking, Hamparian for going along with the plan, Wilbur for all of it, and the people themselves. As for Kirk, that would have

#TrekBookClub #LosttoEternity If you look good on a phone's camera and can make good 30-second videos AND are willing to trade privacy for fame and money, it's good. In any other way I think it's bad and drives people away from doing things of lasting value.

#TrekBookClub #LosttoEternity It used to be that you had to seek the conspiracy theories out by going to meetings, looking up books, being on mailing lists, or buying Weekly World News. Now it comes from your uncle or hairdresser to your pocket, instantly and free!
