I don't care what political or partisan label you attach to yourself. If you are an elected official and you make poor or unethical decisions, I'm going to call you out (for whatever that is worth).

The very last thing New York City needs is more state interference in its affairs. The Governor should have just sent Adams packing, but why would Hochul ever put the interest of 8+ million New Yorkers ahead of what she thinks is in her personal best interest (wrong call there, by the way).

Gov. Hochul has never been know for having much in the way of political courage or principals. She thinks this move was the best for her political career, but in truth, she just ended it. Enjoy your final term in office Kathy. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/20/n...

American politics needs to be far less about performance art than it is and far more about public policy than it is.

NYC mayor Eric Adams is trading away the freedom and safety of tens of thousands of immigrant New Yorkers to save his own corrupt skin. If Governor Kathy Hochul doesn’t find her moral compass soon and remove Adams from office, she’ll be joining him on the unemployment line.

I don’t honestly know what Judge Ho will do here, but I am 100% confident - from knowing him at the ACLU - that he will do the right and proper thing under law. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/17/n...

“I expect you will eventually find someone who is enough of a fool, or enough of a coward, to file your motion. But it was never going to be me.”

Musk couldn’t be more wrong. I truly WISH the election was about voting for policy choices, but it was really about voting for a personality. Even if they heard “reduce the size of government,” without specifics (how?), the statement is as meaningless as Musk is clueless. www.tiktok.com/t/ZT2AwTt3m/

Let it sink in that multiple DOJ officials, who the Trump administration itself appointed only a few weeks ago, are resigning rather than carry out his ethically inappropriate orders. That’s no small thing. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/13/u...

Thank God Trump is focusing in on critical national priorities, like firing the leaders of the Kennedy Center. Their music and arts programming was just too damn delightful. And what a nice, humble touch to make himself the new Chairman. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/12/u...

Release the trolls! (Well played Governor) www.tiktok.com/t/ZT2SA7Mtr/

Shame on #Google. 194 countries call it the Gulf of Mexico. 1 outlier country calls it the Gulf of America. So, of course, Google - the international corporation - goes with Gulf of America. It's not even about the name. It's about prioritizing honesty & accuracy over kowtowing to a bully in power 👎

Well that post aged a little too well. #ToldYouSo #Musk www.nytimes.com/2025/02/11/u...

Rep. Mace is not a very likeable person. Her positions on many issues are ignorant & harmful. But on this matter, she deserves compassion. Persons who supported #MeToo need to show Mace what love & kindness look like, so perhaps she can learn to extend it to others. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/10/u...

If Trump and Musk are hyper-focused on reducing gov’t inefficiency, then why fire all the Inspectors General who are responsible for identifying inefficiencies? Oh yeah. They are also charged with identifying gov’t corruption.

The U.S. is turning into a billionaire-led oligarchy. W/ Elon Musk, in return for spending $250 million in support of Trump, he got control of a fake gov't agency (DOGE) to dismantle a federal gov't that might otherwise regulate his financial interests. Be very afraid www.nytimes.com/video/us/pol...

If it took Elon Musk’s involvement with Trump & DOGE for you to realize he is not playing with a full deck and is potentially dangerous then you just weren’t paying attention.

Crowdsourcing a question here: Who are the biggest social media #influencers who might be interested in doing some advocacy around #student #surveillance issues? They don't need to have previously engaged in advocacy. Reach, especially to student populations, & willingness to help are most important

This is a classic cautionary tale for all #schools, who should be investing in proven interventions that support students & their mental health, not in unproven #student #surveillance techs that consistently overpromise & underdeliver, while hurting kids in the process. www.cnn.com/2025/02/01/u...

To win back the middle class, the Democrats need a lot more than better messaging. They need better policies. And "better policies" means policies that are focused on strengthening struggling, middle class families, rather than on strengthening the Democratic Party. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/03/u...

If anti-abortion states like Louisiana are going after doctors in pro-care states, soon enough they will go after #data collected or held in other states to use as evidence. States better pass laws to protect the data their government & companies collect that can be used against vulnerable groups.

#USAID, the U.S. government's humanitarian arm, has an annual budget of $42.8 billion. The Defense Dept. has an annual budget of $850 billion, so of course #Musk & #DOGE are going after USAID. Tells you all you need to know about their actual focus (it ain't efficiency). www.cnn.com/2025/02/02/p...

Etched on the foot of the Statue of Liberty is a poem that speaks to the heart of our nation's responsibility. The right for people to seek a better life in the United States is foundational to this great American experiment — and we will defend it, always.

Today I learned my work on #student #surveillance was quoted in the "Dad Gone Wild Newsletter." As a civil liberties advocate and father, I'm thinking this is just about as good as it gets. 😁🎉

I did not have "Trump will turn a plane crash into a DEI issue" on my First 30 Days bingo card. In hindsight, maybe I should have. 🙄 www.nytimes.com/2025/01/30/u...

If you're concerned about Trump going after vulnerable populations in your community, then you need to oppose your local police's use of Flock automatic license plate readers ( #ALPRs), which create a national #surveillance system using your data. Here's how to fight it: www.aclu.org/news/privacy...

For those concerned about local #police using their #surveillance techs to assist #Trump in going after vulnerable populations, here's a talk I gave about the techs and how local #CCOPS measures can limit/prevent their use (at 1M+ views, it's pretty popular viewing) www.youtube.com/watch?v=VATK...

So much for relying on #Google for facts (it's been called the Gulf of Mexico for 350 years). This isn't really about the name - it's about how easily #tech companies, who control access to much the information we see, will abandon their integrity to kiss Trump's rings. www.cnbc.com/2025/01/27/g...

I'd run through a wall for this guy! Let's gooooo! #NewYorkJets #Jets www.youtube.com/shorts/UeXIC...

#Surveillance techs that are trained on "them" today could be trained on you tomorrow. Or they could do both at the same time. That is why them + you = us, and why mass surveillance needs to be opposed by all of us. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/25/t...

I have never posted about Gaza until now. I simply want to say that no one in that region has emerged "victorious" from October 7th & its aftermath. It has been an unmitigated, suffering-filled disaster for everyone involved. So put down your "Vs for victory" and make sure this never happens again.

Now that the FCC's #NetNeutrality rules have been stuck down, states (& governors) are again the last hope for preserving an internet that's free from corporate censorship. Here's a primer I gave the Rhode Island legislature several years ago about why they should act www.youtube.com/watch?featur...

Meet Dave Fraiser, CEO of the "weapons detection" company Omnilert, who claims his product is a "proactive avoidance tool" for #school #shootings. Even if it worked, how could identifying a gun moments before it's fired prevent a shooting? It can't & that's why it was doomed to fail in Nashville.

The ACLU & I have been telling #schools & others for some time that #student #surveillance techs like "gun detection" software are a fraud & don't work (& hurt kids in the process). This is a tragic example of learning the hard way. Let's hope this opens some eyes. www.wsmv.com/2025/01/23/a...

Less than 24 hours after the Trump administration's Dept. of Homeland Security terminates the entire membership of the Federal School Safety Clearinghouse External Advisory Board (myself included), this happens. Not a great look. www.cnn.com/2025/01/22/u...

I got "fired" by the Trump administration today (as did the entire volunteer Federal School Safety Clearinghouse External Advisory Board). Kind of a pity - it was a truly amazing group - but I hope this is just a DHS retooling and we can all still work together to make schools safer for our kids.

“The systems we have in place to deal w/ repeat offenders & individuals w/ severe mental health issues continue to fail us. My message to NYs is: Something has to give.” -NYPD Commish Jessica Tisch She's right. The only two options cannot be incarceration or nothing. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/21/n...

For anyone upset about the national security implications of the return of TikTok, just remember that most of the information collected by the app could just as easily have been purchased by China from U.S. data brokers. It was all a xenophobic ruse. 🙄

When it comes to making a difference in the political/policy space, problem-identifiers are a dime a dozen, while problem solvers are a diamond in the rough. This is made worse by the fact that most people in the second category find the idea of being a political candidate revolting. #BrokenSystem

When someone in need seeks your help & protection, how you respond says everything about who YOU are. Immigrants in the U.S., many of whom risked everything for a morsel of what we take for granted, deserve compassion. Fellow New Yorkers, here one way you can help: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSN3...

As a professional civil rights/liberties advocate, I hate losing far more than I love winning. I think that's the case for me because, while wins ultimately make all the difference, nothing is more difficult and painful for me to sit with than the idea that I let people down who needed my help.

If you own an iPhone and want to improve your privacy protections, I recommend watching this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWX-...

You can't vote your way out of a broken democracy. We need creative ideas to fix our political system before we can become a true representative democracy. Whether you like this idea or not (I do), it's ideas like this one that merit discussion and consideration. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
