It would be cooler if all games had selectable difficulty levels where hard mode was actually hard and everyone else could enjoy the other difficulty level they like to play at.

Give Linux Mint a try. If you don't like it and since you already needed to reinstall Windows anyway no loss. Small learning curve to get used to terminology and where things are located but after the apps you need are installed it should be easy.
