And a HUMONGOUS shoutout 📢💥 to the good folks in the city gov't of Saint George, UT. You heard our pleas, and you chose to save this fossil site from destruction. We are *deeply* grateful 🙏🏽♥
I'll share info on whom we can send thank-you messages to as soon as I hear back (probably next week)

Happy birthday! That sounds like a great plan, hope it went well!

Paraphrased from IUCN: "The term “de-extinction” is misleading in its implication that extinct species can be brought back,"...The goal is to "Create a functional equivalent animal able to restore ecological functions lost with the extinction of the orginal species."

It might be a cultural/language thing, but her saying "healthy pups" makes me think "puppy," and that she's trying to project an image of cute puppies. "Healthy wolves/animals" would have sounded better to me.

I don't know if this is just another PR stunt, although one with more science and less sensationalism. She makes some good points, but I find it hard to take anything Colossal claims as valid after the sensationalism. This is at least better than the petty memes on their social media.

Beth Shapiro did a good job explaining the science lost (on purpose) in the sensationalism, but of all the videos they could have responded to, they chose Hank Green's, which is basically internet catnip. He's popular, their video will be popular by assosiation.

Polar bears have hollow hairs which make them look white, but they're not coloured white. Stoats, least weasels and hares go white in the winter in their nornern habitats, but they're not white year-round. Most mammals are some shade of brown, and that's likely true for extinct dire wolves, too.

They have genetic info implying lighter coats for extinct dire wolves, but I still hold that making them white was a Game of Thrones PR stunt. Lions are light coloured, but no one would claim they're white. The same goes for golden retrievers. Very few wild animals are pure white.

Wolves are a good candidate for it since we have decades of research on behaviour and genetics for them (and dogs). She specifies several times the health of the animals was important to them, intentionally not using gene edits assosiated with deafness.

If that is what Colossal has done for dire wolves depends on the behaviour of their dire wolves, if they are decent proxies. That remains to be seen as the proxy wolves are observed and studied. All in all this is a test run, an ongoing experiment.

So we have a politican saying teenagers are not having enough sex? That's a turn from the last... several thousand years of trying to stop teens from having sex.
And yes, their problem is that white people aren't having as many children.

My favourite French portmanteau describes vegan cheese. It merges faux (fake) and fromage (cheese) to get fauxmage

To be more specific, when arguing for eugenic euthanasia, eugenicists would argue that 1) families suffer by their existence, and 2) because they are a tax burden, disabled people are the cause of America's "social suffering." 2/2

Also, hi, disabled, neurdivergent aro-ace person here. I'm not able to work, but I still pay taxes of my disability benefits. I've tried dating and don't care for it, but I have good friends and family that care about me because I exist.

or cheesy plot lines. In addition to the elk you will see reindeer (which are all owned by Sami herders but move around in a more-or-less wild fashion) and lots of smaller wildlife like waterfowl and the occasional fox or wolverine.
So, enjoy! It's a sunny morning...
