My mentions are out of control right now so if you’re all well actually the NIH overhead cut is a good thing because there are too many deans, I don’t much care whether it’s duplicity or ignorance on your part — you’re getting blocked.

Just received this photo from a friend of a warehouse in Kinshasa. These are tuberculosis medications--ALREADY PAID FOR--that aren't being distributed due to the Trump Administration's stop work order. TB treatment is being interrupted in SO many patients around the world. What does that mean? (1/2)

I'd be really curious to know what business leaders think of all this. Not only pharma & biotech but, you know, healthy people who live long lives buy more stuff of almost every kind than unhealthy people who die young. And if I'm not mistaken, healthy people make better employees than dead folks.

Some thoughts on the attacks on the NSF/NIH below, and what it means for my fellow kiddos in the science business yaledailynews.com/blog/2025/02...

Congrats to @torresaurus.bsky.social and colleagues on an exceptional paper! www.nytimes.com/2025/02/05/s...

I don't think the 20 somethings in Elon's DOGE cabal are particularly smart. There are plenty of people who can code; some get lucky. The real testaments to their stupidity are 1) Their abhorrent ideological views 2) Their idolization of Elon Musk enough said!

This is all so incredibly stupid. Just utterly nuts. Bizarre. But don’t let that obscure the fact that we are in the midst of a staggering assault on constitutional government. Staggering.

remember stuff like this when they tell you that diversity means a lowering of standards

Bumping this! If you have reposted, etc please consider adding your name!

Imagine if a cyberattack did this. It would be an act of war.

Here are just a few of the NSF review panels that were shut down today, Chuck. This is research that would have made us competitive in computer science that will now be delayed by many months if not lost forever. AI is fine but right now the top priority is keeping the lights on at NSF and NIH.

Call your Democratic Senators tomorrow and tell them to put down their work on nominations until OMB withdraws its power grab on appropriations. No more nomines go through. None.

American science and medicine has been thrown into chaos and uncertainty over the past week. Here are some stories to get up to speed. 1/12

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

Hi all-if you are pissed off about NIH/NSF freezes, please consider joining us on this letter: docs.google.com/document/d/1...

I don’t have a definitive source on this yet but it looks like NSF review panels have been canceled. Sixty-some years ago, Eisenhower transformed higher education because he viewed a science education gap as the single greatest threat to national security. This is absolutely an act of sabotage.

It sure looks like bad science was just the tip of the iceberg (the substance of the rest of the iceberg is still not entirely clear) www.nature.com/articles/d41...

This year, I want to say thanks to all my great colleagues, peers, and friends in the "science business"!

At JMIH 2024, I gave a talk on the taxonomy of ray-finned fishes presented in a recent monograph by Chris Thacker and I. I was mucking around with Zoom and made this video that is a slightly longer version of that talk. I hope you enjoy and can lead to discussion. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q66l...
