“Motorman” was the name for the position held by the person whose role was to operate the train’s motors and brakes, while a Conductor (separately) operated the doors and, as needed, collected fares in the train—a job Lena was also familiar with, as she’d been the third woman to be a Conductor.

Before cable cars, streetcars were generally pulled by horses. Cable car services, provided by three different companies on certain lines, continued until 1906 when both the last horse-drawn streetcars and cable cars were replaced with self-propelled electric streetcars (trolley cars).

Extending service will also improve access to jobs, educational and health care institutions and promote economic development.
The extension, four new accessible stations, and new rail yard are expected to be complete and in service in 2030.
