Secretary of Defense Hegseth says he doesn’t know if Russia invaded Ukraine. This you?

Super interesting project! In light of recent discussions would be fascinating to see how this indicator compares to the V-Dem indicator of a similar concept, as well as intercoder reliability stats on the coding of the new indicator.

So - I've actually led Ebola outbreak response at USAID. This is bunk from Elon. They have laid off most of the experts, they're bankrupting most of the partner orgs, have withdrawn from WHO, and muzzled CDC. What's left is a fig-leaf effort to cover their asses politically.

Hva tenker demokratiforskere om det som skjer i USA? Vil det amerikanske demokratiet overleve? @chknutsen.bsky.social ved UiO og PRIO deler tanker i VG ⤵️ www.vg.no/nyheter/i/gw...

Are there some sort of „protective bundles“—specific configurations of political institutions that can resist democratic backsliding? This is a polisky must-read by @chknutsen.bsky.social and Jan Teorell on how institutions shape the development & decline of democracy⬇️

Endelig fikk jeg skrevet ned kronikken som har tatt opp mye plass i hodet mitt de siste par ukene: www.vg.no/nyheter/i/gw...

Happy to announce that my first article is finally in print in Political Science and Research Methods (PSRM).

I see they started with the copyeditors.

Things are unfolding fast in real time & one explanation for what is happening is that of the “state capture” where civil servants either accept political corruption or leave ensuring future compliance to Trump. The evidence for this is that cuts will not genuinely shrink state spending. BUT

"even lawmakers within his party have feared for their personal safety, and at least one has told confidants that it has swayed his decision-making" "Tillis told people that the FBI warned him about 'credible death threats' when he was considering voting against Pete Hegseth’s nomination"

This new review essay by @stasavage.bsky.social looks fascinating! www.nowpublishers.com/article/Deta...

Lets put this in "business" terms. If you have an arm of your firms that costs $50k to operate, but it produces $500k in profits, and you cut it, you don't save $50k, you lose $450k. By cutting billions, they have the potential to reduce future growth by the trillions.

I fully agree that the US is on the cusp of authoritarianism. However, I think the path so far differs in two ways from the "normal" way to competitive authoritarianism. First, I think there is a strong undercurrent of totalitarianism. 1/4

Is Musk demanding the data held by the Social Security Administration in order to make it more efficient? Unlikely. Here's a better explanation: www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Democracy researchers please take note, and tell relevant colleagues: The Dep. of Pol. Sci. in Gothenburg is hiring a new Director for the V-Dem Institute. The Director will also serve as permanent (tenured) member of the Dep., with reduced teaching responsibilities during their tenure as Director.

Now in @bjpols.bsky.social: Are leaders really better at reading public opinion? In a large-scale study led by Stefaan Walgrave and Julie Sevenans, we test the assumption that politicians in leadership positions have more accurate knowledge of public opinion than others. /1 doi.org/10.1017/S000...

📢Applications Open for New Director of the V-Dem Institute V-Dem Institute and the Dept. of Political Science, University of Gothenburg is looking for a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Political Science & Director of the V-Dem Institute. To application: shorturl.at/9rvmx 📆 March 27, 2025.

I'm not involved in hiring for this, but I am on V-Dem's steering committee, and have been for close to a decade now, so am happy to talk with potential candidates about how the Institute (and its director) interacts with the larger project/community.

This is an amazing opportunity to work with excellent collaborators on absolutely crucial work!

Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity are unconditional. Our priority must now be strengthening Ukraine and providing robust security guarantees. In any negotiation, Europe must have a central role. Our Weimar+ statement ↓

Our article 'A Crisis of Political Trust?' led by @viktorv.bsky.social is now out in @bjpols.bsky.social! We use >3,000 surveys in 143 countries between 1958 and 2019, finding that trust in representative institutions has generally been declining in recent decades. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

i suppose all we on the outside can do now is hope that the americans' sincere collective passion for litigation is stronger than their death drive

"Look what happens when you write a report critical of this administration: They fire you the next day. This chills independent oversight, and that’s exactly what we need right now." www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

No problem, just banning a media source from coverage access for not complying with the speech dictates of the government

European capitals need to get their act together. The United States is pressuring Ukraine into a settlement that preserves much of Russia’s power and rewards its imperial ambitions—all while pulling back from the European continent. 1/2

I look at democracy data for a living, and the US indeed seems to be in a constitutional crisis right now - but this move by Polity makes me take it less seriously, not more. Here’s why:

Opposition mobilizing in the streets can spur regime change via different channels such as revolutions or coups. But also indirectly through pushing OR enabling sitting regime elites to change the regime «from within» in (very!) different manners. @vldjuve.bsky.social and my new JCR article👇

Can citizen action translate into incumbents changing their regimes from within? @chknutsen.bsky.social and I find that the answer is yes in our latest piece, “Citizen Action and Elite Responses: Opposition Mass Movements and Regime Change From Within”, now out in JCR: doi.org/10.1177/0022...

Trump’s firing of key officials and the gutting of agencies is more than headlines—it’s reshaping American government capacity with long-term effects on political stability and policy. My @thejop.bsky.social article explores how “institutional disruption” impacts government performance over time 🧵

One week left!

I was so fortunate to have such a great opportunity to visit the department of political science at the University of Oslo @statsvitenskap.bsky.social for three weeks this January. Many thanks to Carl @chknutsen.bsky.social for the invitation and the University of Oslo for sponsoring it.

Kids, let's review the two branches of government: -The President, who does whatever he wants -The Judiciary, which eventually decides whether what the President did was okay or not

NEW | Rwandan-backed M23 rebels are advancing towards Goma, a provincial capital in eastern DRC, and say they intend to capture the town. The move is a major escalation in the eastern DRC conflict and would exacerbate the already dire humanitarian situation in the area.🧵

NEW | The SAF continued to advance in northern Khartoum to relieve besieged SAF troops and dislodge the RSF from the capital. w/Sudan War Monitor 1/5

How do autocrats stay in power? Our new research dives into the strategies of political control—repression, co-optation, and indoctrination—used across 229 autocracies from 1946 to 2010. What we found will change the way you think about authoritarian resilience. 🧵👇
