Welcome newcomers to the UK! Whatever your reason for coming, we're glad you're here. That's always worth saying, but today especially. The latest migration stats are out, which means a day of discussion about numbers, instead of people. We've got a few issues with that🧵 👇

In Japanese mythology Fujin is a Shinto wind kami (god) usually portrayed as a fearsome-looking deity sitting on or walking over the clouds and carrying a sack containing the winds. This print depicts Fujin blowing the gust of wind from the huge sack on his back. #FolkloreThursday #JapaneseFolklore

Given that Bezos just did a full takeover of @washingtonpost.com and now it can only report that America and money are great--today is a great day to cancel if you have it, you check to make sure you aren't paying for a forgotten subscription.

So - I've actually led Ebola outbreak response at USAID. This is bunk from Elon. They have laid off most of the experts, they're bankrupting most of the partner orgs, have withdrawn from WHO, and muzzled CDC. What's left is a fig-leaf effort to cover their asses politically.

To no one's surprise, UK newspapers are full of truly dreadful - and, at times, outright bizarre - "reporting" of the Climate Change Committee's new carbon-budget advice. For a sane and nuanced summary – with lots of charts - here's our detailed coverage... www.carbonbrief.org/ccc-reducing...

Caroline Lucas, "We are the 6th richest economy in the world, there are ways to fund defence without cutting the aid budget which is totally perverse" @carolinelucas.bsky.social #Newsnight

Caroline Lucas, "After WWII Attlee had a debt to GDP ratio twice of what it is now" "He had a vision and he put money into the NHS, council housing" "If we have a vision, a compelling story, a political will, we can do it" @carolinelucas.bsky.social #Newsnight

Caroline Lucas, "Keir Starmer himself recognised that our aid budget is a way to protect our countries security" "Starmer criticised the Tories for cutting aid" "To cut the aid budget does not make us more secure" @carolinelucas.bsky.social #Newsnight

PM keeps saying cutting aid budget was a “hard decision”. Rubbish, it was an easy cowardly decision - those feeling impacts are 1000s of miles away & won’t trouble him. A harder decision might have been to stand up to vested interests who oppose a wealth tax - but it would’ve been right thing to do

It’s finally getting brighter pre-7am 🌞🌞

This is big. Far-right troll site Guido Fawkes has always claimed it isn't subject to UK libel law as it's officially offshore. Today it conceded that it defamed Dale Vince, making clear it it's subject to UK law. No more dodging scrutiny. Staines will have to play by the rules like the rest of us.

Researchers from the University of Cambridge say their solar-powered reactor could be used to make fuel to power cars and planes, or the many chemicals and pharmaceuticals products we rely on. It could also be used to generate fuel in remote or off-grid locations. 💚💚

#sophiefromromania and I are enjoying listening to @deaves.bsky.social in a masterclass on teaching public service in the digital age

There's never been a better time to choose to support an independent bookshop. I'm so delighted that the new paperback edition of my book CRYPT - Life, death and disease in the Middle Ages - is available in a beautiful, sprayed-edge special edition from these bookshops: linktr.ee/cryptpbindies

Libraries are vanishing – but Essex fought back. Now, they're evolving into vibrant community hubs for the 21st century. There have been 800 library closures nationally since 2010 – nearly a fifth of the total. In Essex, however, vigorous public campaigning stopped it. ❤️🙌

A fascinating & hopeful river-moment: Lewes District Council agrees to recognise a Charter of Rights for the River Ouse. “The Ouse has long been taken for granted…this is the beginning of a journey to give the river a voice & ensure its wellbeing for future generations.” elflaw.org/news/histori...

There are still tickets available for the More Than Just A Dog get together and chat on 5th March at Waterstones in Aberdeen. Get your book signed. I'll do my best to be entertaining 😉

A new Insta trend: workplaces (esp hospitals & care homes) in Germany show how they, how *we* all rely on migrants who work there, how they are part of this country, our friends, colleagues. We'd be poorer w/o them. They are appreciated. They are us. #GoodMorning, everyone [🎥 shortened; link below]

You may be unaware of them but trading standards and environmental health departments in local authorities could save your life. Yet austerity harmed them too | Dr Huw Evans @bylines.cymru

Tesla isn’t going to survive. Sales are down nearly 50% in Europe. Keep the boycott going. Your protests are working. #3E #endoligarchy #boycotttesla

astronaut don pettit’s new image made my jaw drop. it’s SO beautiful!!!

I don’t know Amanda Pritchard at all, but I think being the first woman to lead the NHS and to lead it through a generation-defining pandemic is a very big deal. Making the decision to step away from a job like this takes courage and must also be very hard. I hope whatever’s next brings her joy #NHS

Last week, the new owners of the Observer wrote to tell me they would *not* be issuing me with a new contract. 🤷‍♀️ So...I want to say publicly that it was an absolute privilege to speak on behalf of my Observer colleagues during our strike. I don't regret doing so. And I learned so much from it. 1/

Word of the Day is ‘ingordigiousness’ (18th century): extreme greed at the expense of principles.

Every major UK newspaper - left, right, broadsheet, tabloid - is running a front page campaign against copyright carveouts for AI training. I can't remember the last time any political cause had such broad support, let alone one so anti-big tech and so economically consequential.

First evening I’ve been able to finish work and take dog for a walk before sunset. That’s a feeling. #DogsOfSky

Exactly this. Awful.

OK so here it is, Starmer will cut development spending to fund the military. We don't need to wait for Farage to get elected. He's already in power. The age of aid is over. Time to fight for true, international justice. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Finished the second set of episodes of @joannahs.bsky.social's excellent You Do Not Have To Say Anything on the commute today. Thoroughly recommended if you want a compassionate guide to how the criminal justice system works (or doesn't).

I heard my friend Dan here give a remarkable brief talk about this last month. Thankfully, he’s written it up at length to share.

I have just, seriously, heard Nick Robinson on Radio 4 ask if Germany can seriously call itself a democracy if the CDU/CSU continue to refuse to include the AFD from consideration for power. What. The. Actual.... www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/... At around 8:23:00 am

We are seeing the world change, the US siding with Russia in opposition to freedoms for one thing. Human rights and international law need to be defended. Badenoch would happily trash global democracy and rights in pursuit of her meaningless culture wars. #r4today www.bbc.com/news/article...

A shocking if not surprising headline - what’s really depressing is that none of the newspapers have it as their headline

Sometimes one single cloud can take my attention. This one did yesterday morning

Gracias Sra juez Susana Álvarez Civantos. bsky.app/profile/cade...

Obviously no direct comparison, but Starmer would do well to understand that, in the German election, 39% of those who viewed their financial situation as bad voted AfD. This report is right to urge him to focus on living standards rather than immigration etc. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

A huge thank you to Silsden’s Richard May, who has dedicated 15 years to conserving Yorkshire’s countryside! 🌿👏 Read more about the work he does as a volunteer to protect our landscapes and how he’s celebrated this anniversary:

Whatever happened to the Great British Truck Driver Shortage of 2021? Did it get resolved? Did anyone learn anything? The short answer is: drivers got more money & the acute shortage went away. However... www.ft.com/content/f320...

Perfectly standard morning walk with #sophiefromromania - met three neighbours and didn’t bark at them, calm as small children came past. But that is hugely encouraging

This isn't a great look for either the Throckmorton family or the @nationaltrust.bsky.social. For starters, they'll have to change their slogan to add a disclaimer in it: "For Everyone. Forever*." * Except when we've already got you to fund the repair bill.

Here’s the classic error of assuming that what applies to the NHS must also apply to #socialcare. Yet you can’t simply apply the planned NHS ‘shifts’ described here - hospital to community, sickness to prevention and analogue to digital - to social care. 1/5 www.standard.co.uk/news/politic...

It was always going to be a tough ask to get cross party support for #socialcare reform but this difficulty, according to ⁦‪@BBCNews‬⁩, is administrative rather than ideological. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
