Easy mode: go to desktop mode, discover store, download Retrodeck, add roms

But anyways, my point being, I just find the psychological aspect of the Wayland/X11 arguments fascinating and thank you for listening to my rant

That said, I fully understand not everyone is in a position to be able to upgrade, due to availability or financial reasons
I'm mostly incredulous at the people who have the means to upgrade but refuse to because "it works fine, I'm not the problem"

Most often the one I see is people running very old hardware
"My 30 year old ThinkPad won't run Wayland, therefore it's bad!"
Like, you wouldn't be mad your Windows 95 PC can't run steam, software evolves and sometimes requires new features

But I wonder how much of that is people who just don't like change or haven't used wayland in a long time so they have these preconceptions on it being "buggy" or "not ready"
It's just very interesting how the most vocal haters of Wayland have a very different perception of things

It's now usable for free without a Plexpass, but if you do have a Plex pass it's incredible. The sonic analysis gives a more "Spotify"-like experience, ie recommended albums and radio stations that are cohesive it's pretty cool

Thanks! Never heard of it, I'll try it out! Currently just using Plexamp, which is decent but always willing to try out something new haha

Oh wow that looks awesome! Which music player is that?

I think it's a combination of people not understanding that the secret sauce is just steam itself, as well as Valve being a trusted name
But yeah I try to desperately convince people it's not recommended on Desktop haha

Yeah that's fair haha
It does get better day by day, but nvidia on Linux there's always the potential of some weirdness like that which is unfortunate haha
But nvidia at least seems committed to fixing it

I would agree with this, Fedora has up to date Nvidia drivers, and KDE Plasma 6 plays really nicely with Nvidia on Linux so this would be a pretty good experience

That's fair! Great application, avoids dealing with the official epic store client

Why not use Heroic Launcher?

Gamers: Oh boy I want to install SteamOS!
Me: Just use a regular desktop distro, SteamOS isn't doing anything special, it's steam that's doing all the work
Gamer: I installed SteamOS and it's not made for desktops how could this happen??

I definitely want to pick it up (LOVED the first game) but $80 CAD is rooouuuugh, so will probably wait for a sale haha

Yeah the trusted name part I understand, so I get why it's so appealing to people
At the same time, the immutability part might end up being frustrating to people haha
Steam OS doesn't do anything unique, the secret sauce is steam itself
comment in response to

Yeah sadly as is often the case with Windows eol, most people will just keep on using it until it breaks
comment in response to

Well do I ever have good news for you
(Also you don't need SteamOS, it doesn't do anything special)

Oh yeah for sure, a lot of games will still run on older distros, but you just might not have the most recent packages or features
Up to date nvidia drivers, hdr, better wayland support etc
comment in response to
post
That's totally fair! In the desktop space RPM based distros (or arch based) are kept more up to date, which is beneficial for gaming purposes, same with using Wayland over X11
There aren't really any bleeding edge debian based distros sadly :( so they are often really behind on packages

I would say Fedora (KDE Edition) would be a better choice for gaming, Cinnamon doesn't have support for HDR and VRR and other newer features like that

Can confirm it's a flatpak thing, I had the same issue on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed

To add, I do think it's awful that devices people use daily are getting bricked
I just personally think they are terrible haha

Two ways, unzip to a games folder and add the exe to steam, or download the Itch io launcher, I believe it's in the Discover store and you can install it that way

Linux Mint is often recommended as a really easy to use and install distro, but if you want something a little more up to date with more features I'd recommend Fedora KDE personally

Unlocking the ability to hear HiFi audio is a curse, you can't go back once you do
comment in response to

The issue with Mint is that Cinnamon is still X11 (wayland experimental) so you lose out on VRR and HDR, which are things a lot of games benefit from
Personally I find Wayland feels smoother than X11 as well, so I don't love gaming on X11 haha. It also doesn't have great multi monitor support
comment in response to
post
Yeah for stability and work related tasks, Mint is AMAZING
But for bleeding edge stuff or gaming it's not amazing because it's quite outdated :(

I've experienced this before with an older iMac, turns out it just needed the broadcom wifi drivers, Im not sure the exact package name, but that should point you in the right direction to get it working :)

There's really only an extremely small handful of apps I use that are still X11/Xwayland only, but the big one is Steam, can't wait for that to get updated to Wayland eventually
For games will be testing the Wayland driver in Proton/Wine 10!
