The final volume of the Oxford History of the University of Oxford begins in 1914 with the logistical problem of repatriating all the German students on the outbreak of the War.

I hadn't seen the official listing for my block of flats before--nor knew that it was listed in 1998 (nor that the listing specifically includes the retaining wall!)--so thankyou for that. Also: it is too hot.

Not yet clear whether the BBC failing to carry the live feed of the Garda band is because of the Napper Tandy-themed lyrics of "The Wearing of the Green" or because, as is claimed, "the buggers in the depot didn't know the tune".

He's much too kind to Glasman in the pre-Referendum period, whose complete inability to speak responsibly in public was a key reason Blue Labour was getting into serious difficulties in 2011-12. (Here there's just an "explosive" interview that's put to rights by an "excellent New Statesman essay".)

Slightly alarmed to read on a UCL webpage that "I was variously employed by Cambridge University and the ICE before taking up a permanent lectureship at UCL in October 2012", but I suppose it's good she isn't working for Donald Trump's ICE anymore.

I basically spend my time these days listening to 1970s country music ladies, so Nashville (when I re-watch it) will have further significance. And, yes, it is a great cat in The Long Goodbye.

I need to watch Nashville again (and not only because it has reached its half century).

Bizarrely, the very large, usually reputable organisation that contacts me from time to time for employment references (concerning my students, or former students) whose emails look the scammiest of all are from the UK Civil Service.

Good luck, country.

I am delighted, but not surprised, to hear that he is such an excellent cat (i.e. not just in photographs).

Also, this is from the website of the guy complaining about how expensive London is, and how it's only available to global elites
