Chappell Roan to her original label

Come work with me at UOW! Multiple Level A fixed-term and ongoing positions are up for the School of the Arts, English and Media - all close 9 February so get in quick! ejgl.fa.ap1.oraclecloud.com/hcmUI/Candid...

New publication! In my latest article with the Australasian Journal of Popular Culture, I discuss the growing trend of retroactive superhero franchise multiverses: how they started, what they're doing, and what might come next. intellectdiscover.com/content/jour...

I can't believe David Lynch is gone. His art is some of the most important work I've ever seen (wouldn't have written my book if not for Twin Peaks: The Return) and he was attuned to a uniquely-surreal wavelength of his own. The world is dimmer today. Rest In Peace, sir. deadline.com/2025/01/davi...

Happy New Year everyone! Always hope that a brighter and better year awaits us all

🚨 ONLY 364 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS 🚨

Fifteen years on and after seeing it probably as many times, I will still defend the ending of Battlestar Galactica as a fantastic piece of television.

#SSAAANZ2024 is wrapped. A fantastic conference with great opportunities to further screen studies research in 2025 and beyond. Thanks to all the attendees, the wonderful folks I met and caught up with, and all those who saw my paper on Wednesday. Now for the road home!

Thrilled to announce that been appointed as an Ordinary Member of the Screen Studies Association of Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand (SSAAANZ) Executive Board. We're already talking exciting new projects on regional screen study hubs, conferences and networking events. 2025 is gonna be good!

Day 2 of #SSAAANZ2024 off to a great start with @drtvlotz.bsky.social's keynote on microaudiences and changes in understanding place and cultural specificity in Australian screen stories.

It was great presenting on Shogun's cinematic successes at #SSAAANZ2024 today. Feels good to be back at in-person conferences.

Day 1 of #SSAAANZ2024 is in the books. Some amazing speakers and panels on the theme of "Seen/Unseen".

Great HDR/ECR prefix day this afternoon for #SSAAANZ2024. Got the chance to hear about some fantastic projects in screen studies, some of which I'll get to see from tomorrow. It's gonna be a good one!

#SSAAANZ2024 begins today! Excited for the ECR/HDR day later today and for presentations beginning tomorrow, when I'll be telling folk about the cinematic spectacle and cultural authenticity of Shogun.

The beginning of the Radelaide journey.

Heading off to my first interstate in-person conference in six years. Despite the crack-of-dawn wakeup to make my flight I am EXCITED.

I was listening to an interview with Ayana Elizabeth Johnson a few days ago who said we need more stories in Hollywood depicting a solutions oriented future beyond dystopia. My first thought: Star Trek’s been there this entire time. Gene Roddenberry+ have given us a lot on which to build.

So rundown after 2 weeks: I got A LOT of amazing, creative pitches on so many exciting shows, incl ones I had not even thought of yet, and I can‘t wait for them to turn into fleshed out proposals and hopefully, full books in a few years. Call is ongoing/open though, so keep sending your ideas!

USyd proposes a crackdown on free speech and campus protests, the "New Civility Rule". If the name doesn't sound chilling enough, the restrictions certainly are. www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

For a book proposal I ask Google the question "babylon 5 how many episodes did jms write". The AI Overview says "many episodes", while the quick-shot Wikipedia summary - literally right below the AI - specifies 92. The Google search AI Overview is an annoying, ineffecient and unwelcome impediment.

My one-year-old, who is already obsessed with Batman, watched the Adam West scene with the anti-shark spray. When the shark exploded he waved "Bye-bye." Then gleefully exclaimed "More Batman!"

Magdalena Bay is an amazing band and I'll take every opportunity to signal boost them - so here's my podcast about their latest album and why it's the greatest thing ever. youtu.be/fsM_9FHF6as?...

It's really hard to overstate how many world-leading experts on digital media and social media are at Australian universities (I work with many of them!), and the overwhelming majority of them will tell you the social media ban is a bad and counterproductive idea.

"Dear Dr Comerford, as a media researcher we think you have a lot to offer our journal on nutrition/sports science/architectural design/neurochemistry, no we definitely are not run by bots". Or my other favourite, "Hi Dr Comerford, we offer a discount of 10% off our $600 article consultation fee".

If you're new here, I occasionally share photos from the Warhammer I paint to unwind. With that in mind, here's a gnarly pair of Mangler Squigs for my Age of Sigmar army (Gloomspite Gitz).

Since I’ve popped up in good company under the shingle of critical university studies, please share this petition by my hardworking colleagues fighting the removal of all languages as well as linguistics. The implication: for regional students, English is enough. www.change.org/p/fight-the-...

My cartoon for this week’s Guardian books…

Academia runs on contacting other academics out of the blue and saying HEY do you wanna do this COOL THING for essentially NO REWARD and equally certainly NO RECOGNITION from your employer and those people going OH MAN that sounds AWESOME sign me up for the COOL NO REWARD NO RECOGNITION EXPERIENCE.
