I also make the rubric detailed and highlight relevant feedback sections alongside short comments; saves on rewriting the same problem comment fifty times and sets clear expectations on quality needed for specific grades.

I agree with the opt-in tactic, and I also usually make final assessments all opt-in for feedback (ie. all students have to ask for it if they want it - usually very few takers and only one or two who ask for it after the fact). Not sure how well it would work for first-year since they lack exp.
