Here I react to the shameful behavior of American leaders and media toward the Ukrainian president. No doubt there were more, but I saw five failures on our side: of hospitality, decency, democracy, strategy, and independence. Please watch and share. snyder.substack.com/p/five-failu...

Neither this US Administration nor Russia believe a strong EU is in their interest. How do you weaken the EU? Beyond platforming the far right, via a bad deal for Ukraine

It's clear that this now needs to happen very quickly. We also need more EU borrowing to finance military aid to Ukraine.

The US administration has turned again its allies and is likely to cut off aid to Ukraine. After today's live broadcast from the Oval Office, Europe must swiftly launch a €200 billion borrowing programme so that the EU can now fully cover military aid to Ukraine.

Habecks Erklärung, warum die Grünen kurz vor der Wahl an Zustimmung verloren haben.

Reality check. Thank you, Financial Times.

Here is the speech against #Merz that made The Left's leader popular on Instagram.

Some thoughts on the German elections. After 16 years of Merkel's chancellorship, people voted for change in the 2021 federal elections. The result was a fragile three-party coalition for the first time in Germany's post-war history. (1/14)

The biggest surprise of Germany's federal election is the meteoric rise of the Left Party. The AfD's result fell short of its peak support in the 2023 polls, while the Left rose from oblivion to 8.8% in a matter of weeks. Young voters who reject xenophobia are making their voices heard.

In the end, 0.03% of the vote decided the composition of Germany’s new government. If the BSW had gained another 14,000 votes, it would have passed the 5% threshold and Germany would have had a three-party coalition government consisting of the CDU, SPD & Greens bundeswahlleiterin.de/en/bundestag...

There won’t be a reform of Germany’s fiscal rules (“debt brake”) b/c the new coalition of Christian and Social Democrats together with the opposition Greens won’t have the required ⅔ majority in parliament. It could have been done before, but Merz put destructive politics before his country’s needs.

The CDU was polling at 34% in November 2024 and ended up with 29% in the election night. Baffling blunder by Friedrich Merz: his campaign paid for the AfD, the Liberals and even the Left Party – just not his own party. It's actually a good case study in how to screw up political marketing.

Highest voter turnout in Germany since 1987.

Once again I am leaving the Munich Security Conference in a low mood. Amongst all the noise, the US signalled their plans for Europe, so things are becoming clearer. But things are clearly not good. This is what we now know, and what we have to do about it:🧵1/17

The audacity of Vance scolding Europe for having annulled Romanian election results due to Russian interference, representing a president who violently physically attacked the US system of governance and refused to acknowledge his defeat, still claiming the elections was stolen, is simply disgusting

Dear @robin-j-brooks.bsky.social, I’ll bet you two tickets to an @eintracht.de match of your choice in Frankfurt if you can show me one credible example of the SPD or the @gruene.de attacking the CDU for trying to take immigration as an issue away from the AfD. It simply hasn’t happened. (1/4)

Economic simulation by DIW and ifo Institute unanimously show that the fiscal policy proposals of the CDU/CSU, FDP and AfD would not only strengthen the social divide in Germany, they are simply unsound and unconstitutional. How Mr Merz manages to present this with a straight face is beyond me.

From @edwardluce.bsky.social‘s piece: “Might he pick which of America’s creditors to repay and which to declare fraudulent? Quite possibly. Trump, not judges, will be the decider.”
