A lot like Seattle in 2020. I was there. The vast majority of us were doing as well as...anyone else in 2020. Meanwhile, people who had never been here were posting the most over-the-top wildness.

Given the lack of any evidence whatsoever that anyone would have done it differently, it's hard to say definitively that it's not inherent. I fully agree that in a different world, it may not have to be. But in this world, I don't think it would have happened without theft.

How obvious is it when even Trump can figure it out?

This again 🙄

I don't know the answer of whether theft is inherent in the tech, because it's never been done that way. Could a model be developed from material the authors provided willingly? I guess? But who would those authors be? How would you get permission? It would be a lot of authors, in many contexts.

You've made it blatantly obvious that you don't actually spend time hanging out with, let alone learning about, trans people. Maybe sit this one out.

I'm not sure I would say it is evil, but it's not good. Sure, use it AI to find cancers; use it to tell me when my bus is coming in real time. But I don't think it's good to give over responsibilities for research, critical thinking, and writing. AI encourages abandoning those, and that's bad.

It could be, but from the get-go there was no mechanism for that.

Doesn't feel that way.

Maybe you're just not being very clear about what you mean? I took "I never said they ARE doing this" to mean "I never said they ARE using copyrighted material without payment or permission." Is that not what you meant?
comment in response to post
Yes, if things are unethical from the get-go, I do not support them. If you think that means there's a lot in this world that I don't support, you're right. Part of the question is whether the value is worth the cost. We haven't even gotten into all the costs of AI.

I would 100% say that the way discoveries were made is wrong if they were made in unethical ways, yes.

But the technology is being used for evil. And that's a big problem. I mean, sure, use it to do hard math. No problem there. Regurgitating people's creative work is only going to lead to bad places.

Right? Ugh.

You're saying they haven't used copyrighted material, and yet they have. This is more than a philosophical disagreement.

😂

The last one. Critical thinking is already in short supply, but this will only make it worse.

Theft is wrong? Is that not enough?

I celebrate so many indie bookstores, but my first allegiance is to Weller Book Works in Salt Lake City, because I used to work there and it was SO great.

I'm not saying the news wire photographers kept intentionally lining Trump's head up with the Easter Bunny's ears, but they were absolutely doing that

This is ludicrous, @nytimes.com. A lot of people are getting removed for absolutely no valid reason.

I moved a bunch out of stocks in January, mostly because my husband retired then. But I also would have predicted what's happening in the markets. Because yea, those people are that terrible.
comment in response to post
The markets are crashing. But the people who own stocks are still pretty excited about the prospect of more tax breaks for them.

Call them *especially* if they're Republican. They don't need to know who you voted for. Just tell them you believe in the balance of powers laid out in the Constitution.

tbh it's more than one. I can think of three, and the guy you're thinking of is probably #3 in terms of damage. He's a puppet.
comment in response to post
Probably about as much as I did. It was pretty easy to see what was coming; he's doing what he said he would. Anyone who thought he wouldn't was engaging in wistful thinking.
comment in response to post
I think the word you're looking for is "theft."

Levitonians?

I was always amused when they would say "Can we take these three words from your review, cut out some of the words between them, and use the resulting praise for our promotional materials?" Uh, no.

The prologue one, because reading about other people's dreams is always, always tedious. I stand by this. (Same thing with drug-induced trips. They're no fun if I'm not the one having them.)
