www.itg.be/en/health-st... look, Demographic Health surveys are unwieldy & old school & some of the questions- in my work- are terribly worded… but as imperfect as they are, they’re an important source of health data globally (& often the best quant data available).

Terrific example of how US health is intertwined w/ the rest of the globe. "Seasonal flu vaccines need to be updated each year bc the virus changes so frequently. But the US hasn't contributed its information on what's spreading there since Jan., a World Health Organization (WHO) official said."🛟🧪

new paper by @deadneanderthals.bsky.social and colleagues documenting the disturbing phenonmenon of stealth corrections in the scientific literature onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

🧵 Trump’s USAID funding freeze abruptly halted critical global health research, abandoning participants mid-trial. A gross ethical violation. @bachynski.bsky.social & I explain what happened and why it matters @bmj.com . ⬇️ www.bmj.com/content/388/...

Latest blogpost on Musk/Royal Society debacle: deevybee.blogspot.com/2025/02/seve... I look at the reasons that have been given for inaction, and find them wanting. @royalsociety.org

🚨NEW 🚨 On 22 January, GB News presenter Josh Howie repeated a homophobic slur linking the LGBTQ+ community to paedophilia. This is offensive, wrong and unlawful. Join us in writing a complaint to Ofcom to force them to take action 👇 t.co/3b5UH9zuOR

Global Health: Science and Practice (GHSP) is (was?) an important open access journal run with USAID funding. I’ve published in it and know many on the wonderful Editorial staff. They are also victims here, which many responses to this post are clearly missing. Please stop adding insult to injury.

This paper is great! Required reading for anyone interested in global family planning programmes and reproductive justice.

The job losses in the global south are starting to mount now due to the US aid freeze. At least 15,000 in South Africa, and 1,000 in Bangladesh working on diarrheal diseases www.tbsnews.net/bangladesh/o...

It is Friday afternoon of a wild, wild week. And yet for me a reassuring one. My greatest fear was not of what they would do. It's that we would let them. And I'm seeing a lot of beautiful intransigence. From federal workers. From people all over the country obstructing ICE....

#NIH accounts for 47 billion = 25% of US federal research funding, essential for their world-leading position in bio-medical research. Trump just shut it down. No foreign adversary in their wildest wet dream could achieve such a devastating act of traitorous sabotage with a stroke of a pen.

Actions happening in the US right now are not only hallmarks of authoritarian takeover, but also what a hostile foreign power might want. Rapid, destabilising destruction of institutions

Of course we expected this, but it’s still not widely known about among non specialists. The damage done to women’s health by the global gag rule can’t be understated. The GOP/US government have been doing this for decades www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Reinstatement of “Mexico City Policy” will have far reaching consequences and violates human rights. Restricting access to safe abortion and contraception costs lives. We must continue to defend #SRHR for everyone, everywhere. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

UPDATE: Holy sh*t -- this is so much worse than anticipated.... www.cnn.com/2025/01/24/p...

This is incredibly destructive on an almost unimaginably large scale

Trump has not just paused new foreign aid. Today Marco Rubio sent a cable to all US diplomatic missions calling for immediate “stop work” orders on *existing* projects. This is sweeping and reckless. People are going to die.

The authors of a new Perspective write that the Cass Review on gender-affirming care, which has been used to justify bans in U.S. states, transgresses medical law, policy, and practice, which puts it at odds with mainstream U.S. expert guidelines. nej.md/40yLchq

Tell me again how sexual assault allegations ruin a man's career.

Trump is instituting the exact measures that gender criticals tell us they want, so presumably as of today America will be a perfect society for women’s safety and dignity

1/ Trump has announced plans to withdraw from @who.int This decision threatens to weaken WHO, isolate the US, and undermine global health diplomacy when unity is most needed. We respond @bmj.com www.bmj.com/content/388/...

When Musk denies that he did a big ol Nazi salute during the inauguration, remember this, from Jean-Paul Sartre, 1944.

If you are having an abortion in an anti-choice state, do not tell your boyfriend.

Every transphobic journalist, every transphobic activist, every transphobic Twitter user, bears responsibility for acts of violence against us. Remember that.

I love this kind of stuff anyway but this house really is full of surprises 10/10

In our book Calling Bullshit, we suggest that if something seems too good or too bad to be true, it probably is. This post definitely seems too bad to be true. We also teach Fermi estimation, which I thought would reveal an order of magnitude error. But no—it’s absolutely correct.

Great images showing the 40% pollution reduction in Paris thanks to bike lanes & traffic changes. It works and people in Paris are loving it! #ShareGoodNewsToo

The one thing I really thought would stick from the early pandemic years is that if you're visibly sick and near other people for longer periods of time you'd wear a mask, but boy was I ever so incredibly naïvely optimistically wrong.

I wrote about Texas’ lawsuit against a New York abortion provider, and the coming attacks on pro-choice states and the distribution of abortion pills by mail. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

There are standard processes for developing recommendations for health and they weren’t followed here - even more disturbing if members of hate groups were consulted instead

"Wrong people listened to on puberty blockers ban". The National in Scotland continuing to do some good work.

We published a really interesting paper today at @plosglobalpublichealth.org: Recall, understanding, use, and impact of front-of-package warning labels on ultra-processed foods: A qualitative study with mothers of preschool children in Peru journals.plos.org/globalpublic... ➡️➡️

THREAD So your Attention Score went down because people are rage-deleting their Twitter accounts. Why is that happening? Should I be worried? Should I see my doctor? Let's get into what the Attention Score actually is, how it's impacted by posts and deletions, WITH THE HELP OF MEMES. 1/20

No, it's not some weird US version of April Fool's day - this is actually true. Every time this side of the Atlantic we think US healthcare can't get more cruel and absurd it pulls one like this out of the bag

In the past 2 days, Israeli forces have: –Killed 3 World Central Kitchen aid workers –Killed a Save The Children staffer –Killed a Gaza Soup Kitchen chef –Killed an ICU director –Attacked & killed hundreds of displaced Palestinians –Shot a 10-year-old girl

williamcullernebown.substack.com/p/big-tech-i... my take on the situation is a bit simpler (big institutions find ways to avoid implementing their Codes of Conduct if it will cause difficulties), but this is an interesting read nonetheless

Feels like a good time to put this back in the timeline youtu.be/jPCJIB1f7jk?...

Please read this if you consider yourself pro-choice and are ever inclined to say out loud that nobody wants an abortion or that nobody is pro-abortion
