When I was about 13 I went to my local video store to rent THE CRAFT (1996) and the guy said, but it just screened on TV last night, and I said that I'd missed it so wanted the video. A solid example of experiences shaped and community/ies offered by broadcast television (and leaving the house).

Are ppl just not talking about Bill Morrison's film INCIDENT (Oscar nominated, available free on New Yorker YouTube) or what? Incendiary. youtu.be/oW65ChIjur4?...

I bought the ginormous Capra at Columbia set, with 21 films including 4 starring Barbara Stanwyck. It's so beautiful 💜

Sorry to hear that Corinne Cantrill has died at the age of 96. I've been thinking about her and Arthur Cantrill recently. Their mark on Australian and international cinema is vast, monumental, essential. A true legend, RIP.

Kafka was an anti-work king

Some brief thoughts on Bill Morrison's INCIDENT when I watched it last year, which deserves to win the Oscar, but even more than that, deserves recognition.

Also never not thinking about how one of the first things Cameron's Tories came for was Booktrust's bookbag for babies (walked back but amid great confusion). Colonisers destroy libraries & any democratised access to learning & pleasure. www.bbc.co.uk/news/educati...

Me when the manaagement class bears down at my job. However I'm much less polite!

When signs have evidently read far too much twentieth-century continental philosophy:

Ghosts of China, past and present. Raise the Red Lantern (1991).

Obviously I talk about my love for this very unpopular movie and Babs' short-lived disco era a lot because my partner surprised me with this vinyl (even though in his opinion we have too many Babs records already). What a lucky gal I am.

This really is concerning. There are multiple factors and impacts here, but I think there's also a connection between not wanting to put in the effort to listen, and not being able to hear. www.bbc.com/news/article...

So thrilled to have won the CSC vote for Best Audio Commentary at the 2024 Shelf Shock Rewind Awards for Physical Media tonight, which I dedicate to Lee Gambin. Thanks to everyone who voted + to Chris and Phil at @secondsightfilms.bsky.social for inviting me to be a part of this bucket list release!

I saw the new BRIDGET JONES' DIARY at the cinema with my granny which was the exact right thing to do. We drank fruit juice. Can recommend.

Saw these little guys, and a few more, along the river in Meanjin today. They must love the humidity.

I'm watching JUROR #2 and Toni Collette's attempts at a "southern" "accent" are making me guffaw in very inappropriate moments (love her tho)

Love reading Michael Koresky @reverseshot.bsky.social on Judy Garland's "evergreen queer appeal" www.filmcomment.com/blog/queer-n...

Getting ready for Primal Screen tonight, 7pm on 3RRR 102.7FM, where I'll be chatting to some folks who run a local film group as well as reviewing the new releases QUEER and PRESENCE. All three segments tied together by spooky 👻 hauntings. Tune in!

Incredible history!

Wow!! So great to hear this will be getting more exposure. We had a terrific screening in Melbourne in 2023.

Have a copy of this from Mondo Macabro, but their version seems to be sold out. Such an incredible, beautiful film!

The new Civ (computer game) just came out which means I likely won't see my partner for at least several days.

There's nothing quite like sitting in a full cinema watching a film you had a hand in programming, basking in the glow of the audience. This feeling never gets old and I could ride it forever.

Just rewatched Raise the Red Lantern which I used as the example of my favourite movie in high school Mandarin exams because it's so fun to say (大红灯笼高高挂). It's still great and I keenly await its restored release 🏮🪷

Sam Kerr's trumped-up racial harassment case is such a good example of how the police treat people and how bad they are at their supposed jobs that it's worth unpacking a little bit. If you'll permit me, I'd like to explain:

You know what I don't love: being an ignorant doofus!

Even ignoring everything else, it's just so interesting and intellectually satisfying to think about where art sits politically and how it shapes ideas, and useful to any community existing in life to see how others respond to meaning. Radical take: thinking is good! I love thinking *and* feeling!

The point is *all* films - whether consciously or not - are in some way necessarily "political" by default, just by virtue of being made in a specific culture at a specific time and in a specific place. There's no such thing as culturally (and thus politically) neutral filmmaking - its impossible.

Got my contributor copy of this lovely new release from @indicator.bsky.social

Housing is a human right.

I sourced a 35mm print that's screening at the Melbourne Cinémathèque this week. Goes without saying I am very excited!

I wrote a short piece on my most beloved A COUCH IN NEW YORK (Chantal Akerman, 1996) for Cteq Annotations on Film @sensesofcinema.bsky.social www.sensesofcinema.com/2025/cteq/a-...

IT'S HERE! So proud to have helped curate these, critical extras from @priscillapage.bsky.social @glennkenny.bsky.social @bilgeebiri.bsky.social @tambay.bsky.social @joshnelsonfilm.bsky.social @archivistariel.bsky.social @cinemelo.bsky.social @aceabout.bsky.social @antbit.bsky.social + more ❤️

These are very cool! Eloise @cinemelo.bsky.social wrote an essay for A Fistful of Dollars' release!

Do I know any Aus VCE English/Media teachers on here? I would love a little advice.

University bureaucracy (and the things they come up with to justify themselves) is just an ongoing Clarke & Dawe sketch, honestly. If it didn't hurt my brain so much that I'd prefer to smash my head in, I'd think it was funny.

This Top Ten is *woof* but the entire 100 here is so embarrassing.

Two key 2024 examples contrast in how to execute conclusions to interesting and complex narratives that also deliver on thematic preoccupations. These are TRUE DETECTIVE NIGHT COUNTRY (fantastic, surprising, satisfying), and CONCLAVE (bonkers and totally ruinous to the rest of your film).
