Reading this @donmoyn.bsky.social piece in the Atlantic, this quote lays bare one of the core misunderstandings of government. Government works best when you DON’T hear about it all the time. That’s when it’s most effective. You hear about government when something gets screwed up and you’re wrong.

Elon, I hate to break it to you but you aren’t my boss. I answer to the people of Minnesota. But since you bring it up, I spent last week fighting to stop tax breaks for billionaires like you, paid for by defunding health care for moms and babies

One thing Democrats can do, which I call about daily, is tell their constituents what is happening. This is not the time to listen: sometimes leaders need to explain the stakes. @gallego.senate.gov and @repyassansari.bsky.social do this and I hope they do more. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/u...

If you know of graduate student reductions, add them to this spreadsheet. Thanks @cbibberson.bsky.social for putting this together.

The entire business model of American R1 universities is not viable without restoration of federal funding, & every individual institution pretending it can solve this problem alone is also not viable. University presidents need to be speaking out, collectively & loudly about this, in DC, right now.

Very much like the Iraq War, somehow "I thought Elon Musk was a genius until a couple years ago" is now considered the more respectable and serious opinion than "I knew he was a fraud for a decade and was never fooled by him."

This is so bad. I’m rooting for Kessler syndrome at this point, and Musk lack of attention to detail suggests maybe that’s not such a long shot.

Re-sharing – now without the editorializing! “On Friday, Penn notified department chairs that it will cut admissions across graduate programs, a decision faculty members say was made after programs had already accepted students.”

If what the administration is doing does not cause the economy to collapse it will mean everything we think we know about the economy is wrong.

WONDERLAND! Inspired by David I've set about working on a little thread. In the meantime, please enjoy this night view of the 120' high light tower that once stood in the alley behind today's E Lake Street Walgreens. Its 7000 lights could be seen from 5 miles away.

Air travel may remain safe, but cancellations, delays, and fewer scheduled flights are certain. Airlines will not risk the public thinking flying is dangerous. It’s easier for air traffic to manage fewer planes, so delays and cancellations will get much worse. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

We've wiped out a cohort of scholars. If this goes on much longer it will be a generation lost.

In a feat of impeccable timing, the wonderful editors at the Lewis & Clark Law Review have finished their work on my article, "Is Originalism Bullshit?" The final version is now online at SSRN: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

One thing I learned at @ilhanmn.bsky.social‘s town hall is that Democratic leaders hear lots of trolls as they are still mostly posting on Twitter. She said to boost positive engagement elsewhere. We want more Bsky activity so they hear how angry we are but how we support their opposition efforts.

It seems there are going to be lots of opportunities for countries to effectively buy US universities. Sort of like NYU Shanghai in reverse. Rather than start with a new satellite campus, just buy the mothership. Imagine if India offered to replace all US federal funding? Someone would take it.

Clinicians’ Perspectives on Transportation Barriers to Low Vision Care in the Rural Midwest https://findingspress.org/article/129899-clinicians-perspectives-on-transportation-barriers-to-low-vision-care-in-the-rural-midwest

Last night I had the pleasure of attending my Congresswoman @repilhan.bsky.social’s townhall for a lively and at times emotional community conversation. When I took the mic I asked her, “If I can ask you a personal question, how do you arrange your mind to keep going? It’s easy to feel hopeless.

here is the thing about the “argument” that democrats should have run roughshod over the law when they had the chance: it is much easier to break the law to destroy a program than break the law to create one.
