Hey, @mcuban.bsky.social! Your uncle literally wrote books on how bad of an idea this techsolutionism is.

Big thanks to Dan Krutka for the invite to contribute to the Civics of Tech blog. A great space to engage with an audience interested in critical edtech studies. See our post below for an overview of our latest research on ClassDojo & its impact on school discipline practices in schools.

One week from today! Time to start reading The Propagandists' Playbook if you haven't started already! Register to attend the book club on Feb. 18 here: www.civicsoftechnology.org/events

Recently finished Nicholas Carr's new book: Superbloom I have thoughts! Do you have thoughts? We'll be leading a @civicsoftech.bsky.social book club on March 13. I'm planning on working up a review as well. www.nicholascarr.com?page_id=664

"ClassDojo is advancing a metric-driven form of school discipline which is underpin[ned] by, and promotes, neoliberal values." I have yet to encounter ClassDojo in my kids' education, but if (when?) I do...ugh.

🤖NEW BLOG🤖 The rise of metrics-based school discipline: How ClassDojo is changing discipline practices in schools by @jamiemanolev.bsky.social, Anna Sullivan, & Neil Tippett: www.civicsoftechnology.org/blog/the-ris... The blog previews their new article: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

"What is at the core of being human?" I used this question with my doc students as entry into co-developing policies on appropriate #AI use.

MLK on technology and justice: "We must keep our moral and spiritual progress abreast with our scientific and technological advances. This poses another dilemma of modern man. We have allowed our civilization to outdistance our culture..." 1/5

Today's blog post comes from Shelly Jarenski. She shares her experiences developing AI policies for her courses - a task that prompted deeper reflections about her pedagogy and educational principles. Enjoy! www.civicsoftechnology.org/blog/yes-we-...

Read my, @charleswlogan.bsky.social, and @philnichols.bsky.social 3rd and final (for now) post in the Civics of Tech parent blog series! This was a real labor of love thinking through my own role and commitments as a parent to advancing more critical approaches to edtech in schooling.

GenAI has shaken up trust in education, students feel monitored, faculty feel unsure, and AI tools aren't perfect. Maybe the focus shouldn’t be on catching ‘cheaters’ but on building trust and using AI to genuinely enhance learning. Transparency goes both ways!

Thank's to @autumm.org for this great overview of the rich and productive pre-conference workshop at the POD Network's annual conference in Chicago! I'm excited to contribute my reflections in an upcoming post on @civicsoftech.bsky.social Coming soon!

Sal Khan: "Clearly, when you 'sleep on a problem,' some part of your brain continues to work even though 'you'aren't aware of it. Neurons activate...This happens trillions of times overnight, a process mechanically analogous to what happens in a large language model." This is pure horseshit.

Just posted on @civicsoftech.bsky.social, Beyond Algos Part 3. Thanks to @autumm.org and @bonni208.bsky.social for the space to think, talk, and write about trust in an age of GenAI.

Monthly Tech Talk today from 8-9 EST! You can register on our events page: www.civicsoftechnology.org/events You'll also see the registration link at the top of our recent blog posts/newsletters

New post by me! On the @civicsoftech.bsky.social 's blog.

How has generative AI transformed the trust relations between students and faculty in higher education? Read @autumm.org's blog post (the first in a series!) to dig into these messy issues. www.civicsoftechnology.org/blog/beyond-...

This was such an illuminating discussion, and thanks to Dr. Crooks for joining us. I'll be carrying his words with me: "the United States cannot use access to technology to ameliorate the racist status quo of racially segregated public schools...despite the sensational claims of the tech sector."
